Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP vs Huberd's Shoe Grease

I picked up a pair of LL Bean Vintage hiking boots for my daughter and wanted to try a little experiment between Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP and Huberd's Shoe Grease.
The main difference between the two is pine tar. Huberd's has it and Obenauf's doesn't. I picked these two because they both lack mink oil, which I've read breaks down the leather fibers and the stitching.
I'll be doing a follow up video along with other videos on boot dressing.

Thanks. I work in AK, and have used the Huberd’s in the past but my local shop isn’t carrying it anymore so I’m trying the Obenauf’s. I used to drop retardant, and figured if a leather treatment can stand up to that it can protect against avgas and ULSD

I have tried both Huberd's and Obenaufs (on my wildland fire boots) as well as Nikwax and Sno-Seal on my hikers. I used to prefer Nikwax as a great waterproofer/leather treatment, but I now have switched back to Obenaufs for all my boots. I feel that it penetrates the leather and waterproofs better than Huberds. I also like how Obenaufs doesn't create a waxy build-up like Nikwax. I don't mind the way it darkens the leather so that wasn't a consideration. Thanks for the video.

I"m leaning that way also. I really like the way it goes on and doesn't change the color as much as the Obenauf's does.

I'll be doing a follow up video on my RAT boots. For my heavy duty boots I like Obenauf's better because it puts down a nice heavy primary application. Huberd's is nice for dress shoes, it'll still darken the leather but seems to put a light application on which you'll need to re apply more often. I hope this helps

Good video - I have used both of these products and also used Snow Seal a while back - and guess what? - they all work very well. If you monitor your boots and apply these to your boots as your boots tell you to you will have good waterproof boots for a long time. Kind of like taking care of a car or anything - if you do the proper routine maintenance things will always last longer and provide good service.

I agree. In the past I'd get caught up in specific ingredients but I'd bet someone could use cooking oil and have good results

@@KimballCody You bet - I had a guy tell me not too long ago when he and I were talking about leathers, that he used to use Murphy's Oil soap on all his daughters horse saddles and horse leathers when she was in 4H and it worked well. This guy was probably between 65 -70 years old so that had to be a long time ago when his daughters were in 4H - I didn't know what to say except great.

The issue with Obenaufs is it can leave a waxy and tacky residue. So those that need a shine on their boots/shoes need to be aware of that.

Really dont leave that residue if get them nice and warm after applying.

I love the Huberds...its all I use for years...it just sinks right into leather. Nice to apply with your hand. One can lasts a good long time.

On The viscosity question. The lower the number... the thinner.... 5 weight or 10 weight is much thinner than 30 or 40 weight... The Higher the number the thicker viscosity. So which product is superior ? As far as water proofing and overall protection, and which gives the better conditioning? These are the questions that I thought I would be educated on. I cannot find no follow up that answers these questions. Thank You for Your Efforts.

I use both. After clean with saddle soap I let them dry for a day. Apply Shoe Grease generously, let soak for a day. Apply the LP or Sno Seal then done. Great products alone but great when used together.

Nice boots AzDad...I've used Huberd's in the past on motorcycle gear and several pairs of boots and it's always stood up to the elements. My grandfather also used Huberd's years ago growing up on leather tack and saddles.. I think the stuff has been around since the 20's. Huberd's has my vote.

I have used mink oil for years with no evident negative side effects on my boots. My biggest concern was the silicone as that isn't really good for people to begin with so gloves were required for application. That said, I finally got around to testing out Obenaufs myself recently and so far I am pretty happy.

So mink oil is good for the leather but I had people tell me it cause issues with the threads.

Believe you forgot to stir huberds shoe grease. Typically when you stir it up it'll have a tan color and won't be as oiley

I'm leaning towards the Obenauf's, the smell is really nice and the initial coat seems to put a lot down. I have not tried Montana Pitch Blend but I'll look into it. I'll be uploading my follow up video to this one. Let me know if you figure out the name of that Italian maker.

I'd just clean the boots with a damp rag/water if they are just dusty. If they are caked in mud/dirt take a hose to them. Let them dry and put the Obenauf's on. The leather will tell you how much it needs. Check out my other videos on how I clean them. Let me know how it goes.

I prefer the Huberd's. It doesn't get sticky like the HD LP. After i used the LP the boots held the dirt and with Huberds they did not. Initially it does seem to darken the leather more than the LP, but that doesn't bother me.
@t-bfr45-70
@t-bfr45-70 Год назад
You may try the obenuafs oil instead of lp.

I've noticed that also, Huberd's is nice for dress shoes but I can tell that you'd need to reapply it many times to get close to the primary application that Obenauf's puts down. I've been thinking about trying Nikwax but it almost seems too Hippie/granola for me.

Nikwax works great, yet lasts only one day in wet weather. You should try Crispi Waterproofing Conditioning Cream. It works exceptionally well and lasts a good while. You should always heat boots with a hairdryer after applying a product to really melt it in deeply. Room temperature will never work as well. Best regards.

I've used both Huberd's and Obenuafs, which are fine (way better than the Lexol type of products) , but Garrison Leather Care products are the best in my opinion especially for work leathers.

Alright so I have a few questions because I have never owned a nice pair of boots and i recently bought my boyfriend a leather jacket. What is the regular care for leather and what necessities do i need? I've never own anything this nice so i want top take care of these products. I got some black blundstone boots and he has a cognac colored leather jacket. What do I use for care, water resistant, protectants, ect. I am new to the leather world.
@KimballCody

I've never used this on anything other than boots but I'm guessing it will work. Test it on a spot that isnt too noticeable. It will change and darken the leather.

What is great, this guy is thinking ahead. Thoughts are things! If it smells like pine tar, it is. If it smells like bees wax and propolis, it is. Go with the bee's stuff. What did you apply to the soles?

Too bad I can't find Obenaufs (or Huberds for that matter) since I moved back to Georgia. Now I have to special order it and pay the shipping, but it is worth it.

The color of the 10877, 10875 and 899 is perfect as is. I love that tan light brown color. The Heritage 877s are a bit more reddish brown and would darken considerably. Not what you want to be using on a boot like these for sure. The oil doesn't darken nearly as much.

obenauf will get absorbed into the leather and over time will return to the regular color

what's the difference between using oil or grease
@jakeedgell591
@jakeedgell591 5 лет назад
Oil goes on liquid and doesn't leave such a coating on the leather. I prefer hubbards oil to the grease myself
@myleftthumb2294
@myleftthumb2294 Год назад
You have to stir up the Huberd's. There's all kinds of ingredients in the bottom of the can that you never got mixed in to what you put on that right boot. Thus, your comparison is not valid.

LOL@ the chicks who buy boots and never wear them. She/they probably have a whole closet full. Don't get me wrong, I have a boot obsession too in a OCD kind of way and also have way too many pairs of high quality made in USA boots. I rotate them and wear my collection though. I have junkers I wreck at work as a HVAC technician. My good stuff is used for after hours wear. Just this week I was reminded why I don't wear my good or expensive stuff to work. I was wearing a pair of Wolverine Durashock Fusion Max 8" steel toes that are in like new condition when a piece of 6" 30 gauge 5 foot long pipe fell on the toe and slashed the leather all to hell. I would have been very pissed had it been a pair of my Red Wings, Danners or Whites. I just toss these boots when they are worn out. My made in USA good stuff that is recraftable is never beaten like that. Thorogood USA is becoming my made in China boot replacement while working. It's a step up in quality, but not so expensive you lose so much when it's wrecked. After a beating: i64.tinypic.com/24oykyb.jpg After a cleaning and oiling: i63.tinypic.com/331gadd.jpg

I used the Obenauf's oil after a saddle soap cleaning if you were wondering. These boots are Thorogood USA 814-4200. It does darken the leather a bit, or at least on Thorogoods and cheaper boots leather. I just did a pair of Red Wing USA 676, 606 and 953 that didn't so much. So quality of the leather has something to do with it also. For boots you don't want to darken at all Lexol conditioner is still your best option.
