Jeremy Soule almost died in a car accident when he was working on this. In the next year, he would win several awards for his grand orchestral soundtrack he made.
Oblivion will always be my favorite, the world was alive, and the atmospheric music just made it so much better. The questlines were more satisfying in general, with Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood being one of best questlines I've ever done, in any video game.
Finally my Dark Brother returns. (I agree, wholeheartedly) Nothing better than unleashing a Rose of Sithis on the Guard Captain when he is unsuspecting in the pond! So satisfying.
The main quest of Oblivion is among the most satisfying of all the games I've played. It felt big and epic, you had to travel to all corners of the game world and meet all different kinds of characters and it all culminated in a big climactic siege after several increasingly epic battles all in different areas. Skyrim's just wasn't satisfying and didn't fully utilise the plethora of different locations and characters; it should have at least had the balls to make me fight two dragons at once rather than progressively tougher lone dragons. Still a good game and it improved a lot - but story-wise it can't compare.
***** I'll be honest I was going to mention that Dawnguard really was fantastic until I realised that comment was starting to drag on. The story was great, the hugely varied settings were great, it challenged you with more than literally two 'boss' fights and you got to fight multiple dragons in terrain where they could come up from underneath you. If they did the entire game like they did Dawngaurd, it would have been better than Oblivion.
You guys would probably call me a baby but I am crying because this is the game that I played as a kid and my mom would play as well but she died and this reminds me of her R.I.P mom
i put over 300 hours of gameplay in skyrim,and i still think oblivion is better. oblivion is one of the best games ive ever played,and it makes me think how fortunate we are to experiance such things in life,just imagine our future generations who will not have a chance to witness these amazing things
There is definitely something about Oblivion, but I can't say what. It's just more....atmospheric than Skyrim. Skyrim is a game where you get through quests and move on. In Oblivion, you just want to stand in one spot while this great music plays, staring at the sky and forest forever. I cleared every quest I could find in Oblivion, including all the DLC and I was down to just walking the open areas of the map looking for new places. I didn't want it to end.
cgraham6 i have to say oblivion had probably the best DLC ive ever played in a game. so much went into making shivering iles ,it was like a whole other experience
I completely agree with you kakarot, oblivion (and fallout 3) was the best game I ever played. Skyrims fun, but nothing beats oblivion, maxing out acrobatics, athletics and agility and just hopping all over the place... O man...
you're right. first time i played skyrim it was great, but i missed the oblivion feeling i have even now after so many years,not important if i remember the dungeon or quest, like gothic. old but gold
I got this game after just coming out of a really abusive relationship, people say games are just mush for your brains, but music like this and the steady tempo of the game really helped me. Anybody who's been in similar situations knows how hard it is to find your identity after something like that, and that's kind of what's cool about Oblivion/Elder Scrolls, you get to choose your identity, as in real life. So choose to be the hero of Kvatch, and the hero of your own story.
I use this for sleeping, and it helps me sooo much. And same, when I close my eyes I picture myself walking through the forest, looking around at the environment seeing creatures.
This game was the only time I felt at home in my life. My soul is in the beautiful black soul gem known as Oblivion. Nothing can replace the inimitable experiences... Stepping out of the dank sewers, the light piercing your eyes, and seeing the possibilities... Would you attack the bandits armored up, if you could brave the slaughterfish? Would you travel to Weynon Priory, in desperate search for Martin? Would you wander from town to town, meeting colorful characters bounding with fascinating quests? Plunging into your first Oblivion gate and observing the utter chaos, suddenly those bandits didn't seem so bad... Fighting your way up the arena ladder to make something of your character while you're called all sorts of names, then making the choice regarding The Grey Prince... Finding unique ways to grind your stats and make yourself into something... Following your hearts' desires through the Fighters' and Mages' guilds, or perhaps the elusive Dark Brotherhood... Admiring The Golden Tower in the Imperial City and the diverse world within the city walls... Watching snow fall serenely in Cloud Ruler Temple, Frostcrag Spire, or Bruma... Observing the charming simplicity of Bravil... Finding the Dark Brotherhood's amazing hideout in Cheydinhal... Watching the sunset embracing Anvil's coast... I don't think I can really express it better, but I know Oblivion fans understand...
I definitely agree! The industry was more open to taking risks around this time, and we ended up getting a bunch of new and different games, like this one and a bunch of others. Nowadays we get remasters and reboots shoved down our throats. The only companies doing new and exciting things are indies (with the exception of VR).
Who else fast traveled to Bruma and tried to see how far north you could go when Skyrim was announced? I remember trying my hardest to get as close to Skyrim as I possibly could and tried imagining what it was like in that Northern Province. Oblivion was so magical.
And we'll probably be doing the same for the next province when the next game is announced. Unless they set it in Akavir. In which case, I'll be hanging out at Cloud Ruler Temple.
There are so many memories linked to this game and it's music. Those that feel that same probably can't decide whether they want to smile or cry. I wish I could turn back time.
Yes! I haven't played Morrowind so unfortunately I can't really say anything to that, but I totally agree with you for Oblivion being artwork, basically, and Skyrim with lore and history!
..Right..remember that poor painter guy? The immersion was so great that he was absorbed into his own painting! At first i didn't think that the situation was going to be hysterical. The brush part was a nice cover up. ''Paintings so real you could see the trees move'' hah, i swear the games break the fourth wall sometimes! You'd hate to deal with trolls though, i would pull Captain Picard regarding the speed of these trolls and their wibbly wobbly movements.
I get this feeling A LOT lately. I'm planning to play Oblivion again(after 4 years) come June when my semester ends so I can lose myself in Cyrodil without distractions. It's something I'm looking forward to. :)
akatsukiawsome13 Well it's an opportunity to start fresh! I'm in a similar situation. First time I officially played Oblivion it was on xbox as well. I no longer own that console though so I recently purchased the game on steam.
I used to fall asleep to Oblivion.... I would read books in game and pass out. One does not simply PLAY Oblivion... You LIVE Oblivion.... Seriously though, wolves with silverware in them? All the fucking time. I love Oblivion and I want to play it when I finally am on my deathbed.
I'm literally crying. This is so beautiful, great music for a great game. This music makes me very because of the memories that came when I hear it, I remember playing oblivion when I was 10 I think and then I'll replayed it so many times and now I'm 19 and I continue to think that this game was THAT game. The game that is a part of me now, I've played Skyrim but is not the same even Morrowind for me is not at the same level of Oblivion, this game is pure art.
For me, this music is like the glow of the sun radiating through the bedroom window on a summer afternoon. Everything is slowed, and I can appreciate the profundity of existing in the moment. It always takes me to that place.
So many good memories of playing Oblivion. I remember me, my brother and my cousin would play this, non stop, for days on end. This is and always will be, one of my best games ever. :')

Oblivion is one of those games that truly swallows you whole and spits you out again, changed and i mean in an awsome way, this game is truly mindblowing and i Think its a work of art :)
I'm new to this whole world, only falling in love with Oblivion less than a year ago and now playing Skyrim. Listening to this now, I feel like I am in Skyrim having magical nostalgic flashbacks to a previous time (like 200 years ago!) I am thankfully really enjoying Skyrim after an unsure start but I still feel Oblivion has this magic and romance that will be hard to find elsewhere (or Elsweyr if you prefer)
with all these relaxing videos i expect everytime they put in maby a song from Slipknot or something haha in the middle or somewhere random haha just for giggles x)))
I'm listening to this while studying for my GED language arts reading. One of the passages is like the letters you read in Oblivion, This music fit really well.
I remember when I first discovered this game in the computer pubs 10 years ago. Those were these public places that do not exist in this decade anymore, where you could pay 1 hour for using a computer there. Few of them had Oblivion installed on them. I was absolutely stunned by the beauty of that game and the complete freedom unlike I've ever seen before in a game. I could discover the whole Cyrodil on my own. I could be a warrior, a thief, a mage! Choose all these attributes, skills and even birthsign. It seemed so amazing. And I could go everywhere I want and interact with all the NPCs. Wear the same clothes they are wearing. It was funny as I desperately tried to get into Mage University but didn't know you first have to complete all the tasks in the other cities. :D I remember when I saw the posters of the Gray Fox and he seemed so impressive with that mask and all! I joined the thieves guild, finished the first quest and felt like I accomplished something great! :D Oh... this game will always have a special place in my heart. It's like a good book you return to from time to time in few years.
I am a true veteran of this game . played it since the day it came out , I come back to this soundtrack to relax . I love to smoke a good joint and just sit back and let the music take me to my peaceful place. thank you for posting this my friend.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is my favorite video game of all time. I have all five of the main titles, and they're all great, but I couldn't live without Oblivion if I tried. It's such a beautiful game.
i dont know, maybe this sounds so fucking nerdy but atleast i feel something like this i guess, even it was/is just a"game"...for me this was pure art, this was, i mean still is, pure inspiration, especially when it was your first xbox360 game u had as a 12 year old...the stories, the people, just the whole world, it was so magical like a ferrytale brought to life!
ReadyF0RHeady Magical, yes, that is EXACTLY the right word to describe this game and the feeling you got playing it for the first time. While many say Morrowind was the best TES game Oblivion had a charm to it unlike any other game.
I listen to this a lot when i have trouble sleeping. It helps a lot. I loved oblivion. Really made me feel like i was actually in the game. Like my memories playing oblivion aren't me sitting in front of a TV with a controller, they are like i was actually there. One of my favorites from my childhood.

Wouldn't be awesome if they remade oblivion for nex gen consoles. All they would have to do is update the graphics and maybe make it a little more like skyrim i think it would be great

Exactly. I got this game when it came out (well my brother got it) I was 6 and listening to this while in the forests was an amazing experience gave me a sort of eerie and haunted feeling and especially just looking at the mouth of the panther knowing there are long lost ghosts inside the wreck of and abandoned ship just creeped me out but it was a weird feeling I wish I could relive
The song is called "Auriel's Ascension", and it's definitely the best track (which is really saying something because Oblivion's soundtrack is phenomenal).

This game is my life. I can say without a doubt if it didn't exist I would not be complete. When I traded in my 360 and all my games for the Xbox One, Oblivion is the only game I kept.
I don't care what anyone says about Skyrim, this game is a fucking masterpiece. Everything from the Music to the Quests to the World. I think I can say without a doubt that this game changed my life. Plus, I got on the cheap.
So many memories... This game was the first one ever to truly get me fully immersed in its rich, magical world to the point I forgot entirely about the real one, losing hours or days to this gem, and not a second of it regretted. I was going through some really troubled times back then, and losing myself in this game was the best break from it I could get. No other game has got me so utterly lost in such a rich and magical world as Oblivion. It left such an impression that I re-bought it 2 years after I initially completed it and traded in my original copy. Even to this day, just hearing this music brings back a flood of different memories and emotions. I hope one day to experience again the same magic that was my first playthrough of Oblivion. All I have to do is find a game that's up to the task.
I remember coming home from school in middle school after a shit day and just losing myself in this games world. I would spend a lot of time just wandering around listening to the music and looking at the visuals (which were top notch at the time) in between caves or dungeons. I think I'm going to start a new playthrough
I most times I can't hear these songs without crying from the flood of emotion I experience due to the role this game played in my childhood. I'm happy it happened, but I'm sad it's over... sigh
oblivion is and forever will be my childhood and I can say this I have used the soundtrack of this game as music to sleep and just to get into a peaceful state of mind I have put almost a year of gameplay into the game and always finding new secrets and side quests to oblivion it is by far my favorite game of all time
This soundtrack is particularly powerful to me. Once while playing the game, each of my parents (who were anti-videogames) walked through the room and commented on how beautiful the music was.
Oblivion and Morrowind are masterpieces, among others. Skyrim also has that, in a sense, but it lacks so much else. Its graphics are much better, but even with its world in high resolution, it somehow feels more lifeless and sad when compared to these relics. Rest in Peace, Martin. I still hate you, Gaenor.
This game has a special place in my Heart. It helped my back then, when i was a kid. To cope with shit & to escape from all of it. I come back to the OST time and time again, just for Nostalgia & Comfort. Bless
Love this music. In the evenings I pop a beer and play this while I cook for my girlfriend. Lol. Makes me feel like I'm in the old country. Soule deserves the Noble Peace Prize for this one.
Seems like basically everyone in the comments section played this game in their childhood and grew to love it even more. I guess I could say oblivion ages like wine. Glad it wasn't just me, and I'm glad that i'm not the only one who doubly appreciates the passion and soul oblivion has.
When I had played Oblivion in my last school year, I had been sleeping quite a little. 6 hours at best. And every evening, when I played Oblivion and heard that music, I instantly felt an intense desire to sleep. It looked like this melodies had magical relaxing properties.
This really is my childhood.... All the memories... I thought I woudn't even recognise these sounds anymore.. but I remeber it like it was yesterday when I last played it...
No matter the cost, no matter the distance, we shall meet again. For while the Scrolls have foretold of black wings in the cold, when brothers wage war come unfurled, we will always rise up again. And whilst some of us will...will fall asleep before the next land, their memories shall live on. And we shall meet again in the Halls of Valor. this game reminds me of when I was a kid and spent hours on this game just roaming the forests and fighting anything that was in my way. All the memories of how determined I was to finish the game and close all the gates. I now realise how much I miss being a kid and being able to waste time on games like these because I always found it so intriguing and captivating. And I always got absorbed by the storyline because was so alluring, magical and so marvellous.
this was one of the first games i played but damn... skyrim might have improved graphics adn more actions,but Oblivion... it was,is and will be my favorite game. when i uninstalled oblivion i couldnt sleep for two days...this brings back memories....beautiful just, beautiful...
I love oblivion so much, I got it from my older Brother for Christmas like 10 years ago. when i hear the music it remembers me of the beautiful time and it's kinda sad that it will never be as good as for 10 years ago when I was younger..

Every time I hear Auriel's ascension, I cry. I don't know why, but the first few piano keys cause me to silently cry. This game was one of the most uniquely created games of its time and has a pristinely old but new feel to it that it will never lose. I will gladly take this game to my grave knowing that once upon a time I was a happy kid.
One of my favorite games of all time. Morrowind is my favorite and has been but Everytime I play Oblivion it gets closer. I can listen to this beautiful soundtrack anytime. It really helps my mind wonder and get past the tough times.
You can tell that Jeremy Soule was making this OST around the same period as the Guild Wars OST, as they both sound so similar and evoke a really similar feeling. 2005/2006 was a great time.
I've played this game so many times, hundreds of hours, but it seems I can never have enough of this. This makes me want to start one more adventure in Cyrodiil.
