THIS IS NO LONGER NEEDED, OBS 29 HAS LOSSLESS AUDIO • This might be my FAVOR...
One of the many features I have wanted to see in OBS Studio is the ability to record audio to uncompressed WAV tracks, but still use multi-track recording. While it's not a perfect workaround, this custom build of OBS Studio, called OBS Studio MultiChannel (MC) can let you do that!

Dude - I've been struggling to record both sides of a skype call with decent audio quality for ages, spent hours today going through different tutorial videos and articles with nothing working - This video finally gave me an acceptable solution. THANK YOU!! I had one issue and the solution I found might actually be a bit easier than your Premiere work around: The MKV file wasn't playing any audio when I opened it in media player (I don't know if that's normal, but whatever) and I found if I just dropped it in Reaper the audio would transfer fine and I can save it as an mp3 or wav or whatever suits from there - easy! Hopefully at least one person can use that tip and I can consider the favor paid forward.

The FFMPEG custom output option is so underutilized in OBS. I really hope they revamp it to be more intuitive. Something like encoder presets for more professional applications like this would go a long way. We're clearly seeing a rise in the use cases for OBS outside of straight gameplay capture and/or streaming. It'd be nice to see those other use cases (podcasting, DSLR mirroring capture, etc.) be more well exposed and developed for OBS.

well in one of the fb groups used to be in i saw people use obs to run enitire professional broascast so in that case i can see it being used heavly

Reaper (DAW) handles video. I wonder if you could open up that multitrack MKV file in reaper and slice it up there. It exports video as well.

mind if I ask, how would you record like a Skype call with this method plus audio coming in with a microphone?

Add the device Skype is coming in at as "Desktop Audio Device" and your microphone as the mic, then separate them to track 1 and 2. Though I have a better/easier way to record Skype calls coming soon :)

Do you have an update to record multi track audio since Premiere no longer accepts .MKV? I am running tests and I can not seem to isolate my other mics onto their own track. I've tried .MOV, .MKV + remux but only able to MP$ which doesnt work, and .MP$ wrappers with a combo of X264 and ProRes codecs with no luck. Any info is appreciated. Just remux mkv to mp4 in OBS. Mkv isn't an editing container

If you remixed and only have 1 track then there was only 1 on the mkv and you missed a step in the recording tab

GREAT !! Is there a way that you can do a video on ASIO devices ? Not necessarily audio interfaces but when there is a single USB ASIO audio interface (like a guitar processor - Boss GT-1 GT-100 GT-001 GT-1000 etc ..). I have trouble when DAW has ASIO and I also use USB mics. And how this could be done in OBS. BTW, I love the videos and support you with as many views as I can

In the latest version there is no way to select the audio encoder that I can tell and also mkv isnt in ffmpeg :(

Because FLAC isn't editable in most editors. No reason to use compression on audio in the first place

EposVox I think people often confuse (or maybe don't properly understand?) The difference ( nuances ) between 'lossless' and 'compressed'/'uncompressed'... Yes, FLAC (the Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a lossless format, meaning the audio quality is still the same as the original source, but *unlike WAV & AIFF* it has been compressed... so depending on ones particular use and needs, it's 'better for listening than WAV and AIFF' or if you're putting your files on a phone, iPod, etc, when saving space is a plus but to need the best quality. Any time you're working with video or audio production it's an unwritten rule to use non-compressed Source Material. Otherwise you run the risk of compression artifacts.

haloboy456 he uses a hardware solution with mixers and other items. There might be other videos on the channel that explain it. His goal here was too get uncompressed, multichannel audio using OBS. You can't get uncompressed AND multichannel with official OBS Studio, but with the build he uses here you can. While he could use another software for that, OBS is basically the only recording software he uses on a daily basis and this helps streamline the workflow. While you could use Voice meter or something similar to help you split out audio sources, he does the same thing using hardware, and other than that there are many other digital audio workstations. To each there own

I have to disagree about audio compression adding noise and artifacts. In fact, an MP3 at 128kbps has less noise than a WAV. The audio compression acts as a low pass filter and thus removing the hiss/noise from higher frequencies. Nevertheless, I’ve never heard of this release of OBS and O l would definitely check it out. I have been working with audio for years. While it does *potentially* remove high frequency hiss - which is not something I have in the first place - there's still compression artifacting made worse by post processing and etc. I'm someone who can (usually) hear the difference between MP3 and WAV/Flac/etc. and after processing or multi-generational compression, garbage in garbage out

I too have been working with audio for years. And we seem to agree about the hiss thing. I mean just listen to RU-vid audio compression. I do agree about post-processing needing a better audio format (24bit and whatnot). But to be honest with you, does anyone seem to care about voice recordings quality anymore? I mean it's nice to be able to hear more than 15Khz but for speaking I don't think it matters that much.

Audio is the most important part of a video. And for podcasting, audio quality is obviously extremely important. And for interviews etc. etc. hence the entire framing of the video. There's lots of things that matter in the production world outside of casual RU-vid creation ;P
