The whole industrial control & automation field is a land of dinosaurs, and that's the way they like it. This thing probably has a custom OS developed entirely in ladder logic.

Not boring at all. Always Interesting to see weird tech I have never heard of. Might be interesting to throw a Pie in there and try to hook it up to the original keyboard and screen and build a something out of it.

Gabe that battery looks like a stack of five 18350A Li-Ion flat-top protected cells (18mm x 35mm), with a button-connector on top of the first cell. You'll have to measure them to be sure, because protected cells are usually a couple mm longer. I always buy flat-top cells and just use a small button magnet on my flat-top cells when needed to make them button-tops.

a 68k processor running the show, and still the scroll was really crappy. either they're running it really slow, or the screen controller is slow as hell. the pcb tracks look like they were auto routed. interesting to see that kind of technology from 2002. and finally, it's really laughable how they put a big raised section for a lcd but they just put a really small lcd in the middle lol

Oh god keyboards in A B C D order are lame. I have a soviet calculator with an alphanumeric keyboard that goes in the order of the russian alphabet, but it has latin keys too, and that's more likely what you'll be using it with (its basic has cyrillic support, but my understanding is it's kinda tacked on, and some functions are in latin mode. I think they intended to sell this to other countries.). But, the latin keys are in cyrillic alphabet order so the letters go like A B V G D E etc.

You've got your favorite screw driver that lives on your desk, I've got a whole 3 piece tool kit that is always in my back pocket (literally). I'm a Klein junky so two toosl are the 32527 multi but screw driver (I work in telecom and use the square bit all the time, and the different size driver bits are handy too) and 32910 which I also double duty with my impact driver some times, and a knippex 8701180 pliers which happens to be my favorite tool. There's not much I can't do with this set always at hand. I guess my Klein can wrench is never out of reach too but I've got other tools that can do the same job, it's a little thinner sided so it works nice opening pedestals and stuff. That would be the 4th tool in my three piece set. And a set of vise grips.

It's plastic construction, bright bumpers & large screen lends itself to becoming *an important Sandland control panel!* Cut it in flush to the wall, corrosive insides removed and place behind the screen an (sand) egg⏳timer counting down something or another😮💙 😂

It might be nice to have a handheld controller thingy with inputs and a screen, sort of like a handheld glass teletype for your arduinos and pi's -- but I'm not getting great vibes from this, and it'd be a lot of work to develop the code for any odd thing you might want to use it with.

It sounds like it was used to verify calibration of tols for manufacturig.. You never take into consideration the development cost and high overhhead to manufacture small runs. It would be kept in a calibration lab, not used on the production floor. The hadware and connectors are non standrad to keep people like you from tamprting with its calibration. Tools like this are required for ISO90001 certification. A decent reflow oven to build boards was over #20,000 in 2000. Pick%& place wachines were much higher. A basic PCB assembly business cst north of a half milion dollars in 2000. The tool to calibrate our torque wrenchws was rack mounted.. Allrn Bradley was a leader in fctory automation in 2000. They strted our mabufacturing resister early last century, in the early electronicss industry. Nany had NSM numbers for support of nilitary equip, ent.

Gabe single-run and non-consumer electronics, in the late 90s, and even today, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to design, build, and implement. It may look like a $20 dollar piece of consumer electronics, but it is far from it!! That is likely a $50K or 80K tool!
