Saturn is at its closest point to Earth right now in August 2023!!! It will be in opposition (closest to Earth) on the night of 26-27 August. Don't miss out on the most majestic planet in our solar system and enjoy the view! Clear skies!
Wido.

Your image is pretty good for the altitude Saturn is reaching this year. I've not had a clear enough sky to get a decent shot yet. Every time it's clear the haze is so bad i can't seem to get more than a green blobby looking Saturn so far. Hopefully my September sky will improve. It usually does, so i haven't given up quite yet. Be much better in the coming years as it ascends into the Northern sky. Jupiter will be much more accessible this year, and it's a way better planet to image, with everything going on. That's where i'm pinnig my hopes for 2023.

I took out my C8 and put a 24mm eyepiece in the diagonal. Haven’t done any visual astronomy in a long time. Usually I’m doing DSO imaging. What a thrill to see that beautiful planet through an eyepiece! Dr B from Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦

Cool Dr. B, I always switch to planetary imaging when we have the big gas giants near opposition. Don't you just love the live view, and the ability to process a one minute video over 20 hours of automated data collection :-).

Good stuff! I'm hoping I can set up my telescope later tonight to image Saturn. It's hard with a 4 month old going through sleep regression though! I have a couple of videos up from last year when I had more time to image Saturn. Did it with a DSLR though so I want to redo it with my astrocam. Clear skies!

did capture saturn for two nights now and will go for it again tonight. these are my first planetary sessions ever. got myself a 678MC and really happy with it. I use the Celestron T-adapter, a baader 2.25x barlow and the ZWO ADC. I agree with you, the baader barlow is not really helping and results without it are very good (most of the time I have more detail without the barlow to be honest). But I would recommend the ADC for you aswell to get rid of that chromatic aberation (red/blue) at the edges of the planet.

@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 месяцев назад
De ASIAIR werkt perfect voor astrografie. Ik heb begrepen dat de video functie wat traag is (max. 88 FPS), heb ik nog niet op de planeten getest. Ik hoop in de komende maanden een goede review te doen m.b.t. de asiair plus.

At first I thought: "Wow, great moon transit", then I was wondering: "One moment, why is Saturn in front of the moon?" 🤣🤣. Maybe we found the reason why Luna mission crashed on the moon ... Still a great video ...

Yes, it's all about viewing conditions. Last year I made a very similar picture of Saturn with just a cheap 114/900 Saxon scope on a simple clockwork EQ mount, and sv205 camera. This year I tried once with much better 6" scope on AVX mount, and was disappointed with the result, as atmosphere was very wobbly. Need to increase camera's gain next time, I suppose.
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 месяцев назад
It depends a lot on seeing conditions. We need good to excellent seeing conditions (that would be 0.25 to 0.1 arcseconds) to really reap the benefits of our MAKS and SCTs. Hope you'll get some good quality clear skies!

Thank you very much for the video, you've just gained a new subscriber. I had a question about the planetary camera. You mentioned that you used the ASI678mc mainly because of the Pixel Size. I'm in the market for a planetary camera and I'm considering the ASI662MC. It has better FPS and Full well, but it does lag behind in Pixel Size and Resolution. My question is: Is the 678 really more suitable for planets compared to the 662? Both of them are priced similarly. Thanks once again.
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 месяцев назад
They're both fine for different reasons. I wrote a blog about it on my website, check: astroforumspace.com/zwo-color-cameras-for-planetary-imaging-asi678mc-vs-asi662mc/ If you go with the 662, due to a larger pixel size, you may want to look into an additional barlow lens. But that also depends on the focal length of your telescope. Good luck!
@jair_rillo
@jair_rillo 11 месяцев назад
@@AstroForumSpace Wow!!! that's a really useful link, mainly this: "Since planets are relatively small objects, reducing the resolution to 640×480 pixels at 12 bits yields 215 FPS for the ASI678MC and 161 FPS for the ASI662MC.". Thank you

@Wido's AstroForum. Thank you for the video. You have an HP computer. What software do you have to control the telescope? Do you have a video on this? Thank you for your answer
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 месяцев назад
for planets: Stellarium (to control my telesocope mount and remotely slew to the planets, like you saw inthe video), and sharpcap (to control my planetary camera and capture the planets in a video).

Hi Wido. I am thinking of joining your Astro forum. Have you got some advice on setting up plate solving. What hardware and software I need. How to mount guide cams etc? Please 😊
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 месяцев назад
Thanks! No pressure 😉. I use Sequence Generator Pro for platesolving. Most folks use NINA btw. I have a quick guide on how setup SGP on my website: astroforumspace.com/sequence-generator-pro-an-illustrative-guide/
