Thanks, Jason. I needed this since I too am working on my doctorate and wanted to find a way to use Obsidian in my research flow.

I created my own system, and mine is surprisingly similar to Jason's. And, so, I totally agree with the idea that the graphic should be according to tags. Great. Very helpful interview. Thank you for this.

@@jasonyuh6993 TY for the comment, Jason. I think it has to do with the nature of the field we are in (I also am a PhD student working on theology), or a doctoral work in general. We need to write things that requires us to be keeping track of the authors and their works all the time. It might not ideal for those who try to connect their own ideas and thoughts using Obsidian, however, for us, I guess the source of thoughts are just too important to lose track of.

@@PHwang-ld4hk Another theology student here... I agree - the biggest challenge for me adopting some of the suggested methodologies has been being able to refer back to (and cite) the source all the way through the process. This video is very helpful.

Regarding your talk on how to "find specific words/tags that are missing" at the graph, just add a dash (-) in front of your search and there you have it ;)

Thank you both for this talk, is very inspirging, as you said at the end of the video. I have a couple os questions. The first one is how to create tags on obsidian, because as I understand, hashtags work for headlines. My second question is if you could show us how you navigate from Obsidian to Word, and how you manage your references in this process. Again, thanks a lot, this is extremely helpful.

Awesome thanks! What's your process for reading journals, books, etc? Do you read them digitally, hard copy? Do you highlight or just take notes as you go? I saw you import some books completely into obsidian, do you do that with all books and articles? If not, what does this organization look like? Thank you both!

I feel like Jason has taken the idea of Zettelkasten but has made a system that is truly native to a digital platform. So many other Zettelkasten videos miss the power of the digital platform because they are adhering to the analog method too much.

Awesome, Jason! I just started using Obsidian a few months ago and love it. I haven't watched the video fully yet, but have you looked at the zettelkasten system? Is that what you use with obsidian?
@jasonyuh6993
@jasonyuh6993 3 года назад
What a small world and great to hear from you! Yes I have looked into the Z system. I use it a bit depending on the topic and how important intimate knowledge of that topic is for my argument. Obsidian provides the flexibility to be a Z system, but to also be more traditional. Our field requires more of a traditional way of taking notes because the context, not ideas, is what's most important (and what's most abused!).

I love how he manually puts in links for all the resources of each author. I have a similar need for my work, and I am wondering if there's a way to do that automatically.
@jasonyuh6993

There might be a plugin out there? I'd like to know as well. But I haven't really had time to look into those options and I do think doing things manually helps me to remember/retain, so I don't mind it.

@@jasonyuh6993 Hey thanks for the reply. I saw a plugin that will display all of the backlinks on preview mode, but I am currently doing it manually for pretty much the same reason. Let's see how it goes. Your field of research is crazy interesting to me. Keep it up.

When it comes to submitting drafts etc., does Obsidian have a reliable export function to Word that isn't full of problems? Or do you do your research in Obsidian and your writeup in Word?

Ok, I wish I had known about this when I first started my doctoral research, but I can use now that I am in data collection and analysis has begin (Qualitative inquiry). Of course, I have to update the lit review, etc. Question: quote block? Is that the same as reference blocking?

Same! I wish I knew about this much earlier before course work, exams, etc. Unfortunately my notes are spread across 2 or 3 platforms, but it's better late than never. As far as your question, they are technically called blockquotes (via the > key).
