Thank you, this is so interesting! I have been able to identify with distinction, the pathways of the occipital nerves and other nerves since a car accident almost 20 years ago. What fascinates me is how the nerves travel thru muscle. This might explain why I am an avid fan of morning stretching exercises (for neck & back), before they start tightening up that helps endure, postpone occipital issues till later in the day or prevent them altogether. Mine occur on the left side but this morning I have an inflammed & swollen nerve about 2-2.5" behind my mid right ear that looks like where the greater or third occipital nerve is located. Odd thing is that it is usually on the left side...the left eye and this level of tenderness and swelling in this location is new to me...about to go ice it. Just meant to say that I found this interesting and to say thank you...there is power in knowledge.

Great to hear! Can definitely get dizziness and balance issues when headaches are back here. There are a lot of eye exercises that can help! Find a good physical therapy channel that covers "VOR exercises" that involve head and eye movements. I will have a cleaner and more organized channel eventually but right now just house the videos for my patients for the most part.

this thing happened to me, its feel like a shock sensation in head and my eyes moving in particular side at a same time after studying what the problem is i found its occipital neuralgia so i decide to apply some heat to liquify the blood movement around the area and amazingly slowly over time the frequency, intensity of the shock in my head reducing and some neck stiffness, pain also reducing. as far as my knowledge concern the muscle tension and injured nerve healing by applying some heat, but i still prefer consult with doctor before take any step. thank you very much for sharing some knowledge (God Bless you)

Chelsea, I have done more research (on my own , of course, because typical doctors DON'T explain anything to this extent). This is by far the most exhaustive and pinpoint explanation of what is Happening to my Body form the cervical Instabilities affecting the many cranial nerves, and also the Vagus Nerve affecting so much more. Now, I must seek the right person who will address this, and help to correct these instabilities (including Facet Joint Syndrome, where the almost all mt Facet Joints are arthritic). Thank you again for this Video. Please espouse on it and do more of this for all our benefits.

Hello and thanks for the video ! I had a question. I have been having facial spasms for about a year now, more precisely, involuntary blinking, but very hard blinking. I kind of make a face like someone in extreme pain, closing my eyes really hard, and I can't seem to control. It happens every few seconds, and the more it happens, the more I get pain down my face, neck, shoulders and arms all the way down to my hands sometimes. Do you think this could be related ? And is there anything I could try to make it better ? Thank you so much for your time !

Very interesting. After 2 years of pain and research, failed therapy, I think I’m starting to see what’s happening. Today I squeezed the splenius capatis after a severe headache bout and it was so sore I could barely touch it. I have chronic tightness and pain at the back of the neck and chronic headaches. I have all the symptoms: I know when I’m getting a headache episode as my eyes get super irritated and the next day I get a rash/dermatitis at the edge of the eye. I started to suspect the neck extensors were causing this but didn’t know which one. Now after today I’m almost positive. Temple headache (sometimes sharp and electric like, mostly diffuse), pain on top of head, eye irritation/pain and rash, soreness at the splenius capitis attachment all leads to this muscle. Both cycling and swimming sets it off, which I assume the head turn and extension it’s east to see. Really great video thank you. If there is any other info on this I’d greatly appreciate 🙏🏼

I highly encourage exploring your own musculature like you did! That is the primary reason I make these videos for my patients. First off so they know what I'm visualizing when I'm assessing them, what I am pushing on, why I'm doing what I'm doing, etc. Secondly so that they have it as a resource to refer back to when doing their homework to help with mind muscle connection. When you can see something and touch it and feel it on your own body it is very helpful in my experience! I would also see how your sternocleidomastoid muscle feels!

@@HiFLEXHealthPerformance Great thank you.! So it looks like it is the upper trap AND the scm are my issues. I have weak scapular stability so there is a constant pull of the upper trap on the occiput. You also get pull from the levator scap - the entire area becomes radioactive ☢️. All around the upper segments. The trigger point on the edge of the trap flap refer pain into my head. I know this as I can replicate them by pressing. The other nasty is the scm, this guy is always tight and can cause major issues. Massage this guy doesn’t work so actually I need to strengthen it. I need to work on lower traps and rhomboids to get dynamic stability of the scapular, without this upper trap will not not relax.

@@xpost92 Girl you are ON IT! Strengthen the musculature that helps tip shoulder blades back and upwardly rotate (low trap, mid trap, serratus) and work on calming down the downward rotators and forward tippers (pec minor, rhomboids, levator scap, upper trap). This is great info. You do a great job of explaining how this all works. I initially had severe inflammation, pain, and spasms upper traps, chest, and neck. After 4 months and a couple of x-rays it subsided. I have now been living with a constant dull scalp and eye ache. Everything on the internet (except for you) states it's a terrible illness if you know what I mean. Got an MRI scheduled, Dr not sure what is going on and put me on lyrica. Any opinions on what this could be and recommendations ie massage or acupuncture? Thank you.

So sorry you're experiencing such frustrating symptoms with minimal answers. Personally I think a neurological focused dry needle therapy combined with joint mobilizations to the appropriate levels (determined by a skilled PT typically or chiro) and a strength program that works on endurance of stabilizing musculature and calming down the overpowering musculature like pec and upper trap is a good approach. Of course everything is nuanced and depending on specific scenario. Are you tender along your sternocleidomastoid?

And noticed similar symptoms for occipital neuralgia (intense pain in head on and off I think its co-related (targeted especially on our nerves) What worked for me:- head posture, neck excercise, lying on the side of bed facing upwards and head tilted Down (5 mins or more),anti-inflammatory diet, vitD, fish oil capsules. I have also started putting almond oil in nose and ears (2 drops each) before bed to strengthen the head nerves. I hope it helps you the way it helped me. 🤞

HEY THERE..........So for several years I get off balance and nausea from my upper right occipital area being tight. Chiro does an occipital lift adjustment and it can help. For a few days. If it gets tight enough or inflamed I will get dizzy just from certain pitched sounds in right ear, if I try to plug my nose and pop my ears, the right one struggles, if i dig into that area on the right just below base of skull with a golf ball, or do a bunch of chin tuck type exercises, the sound sensitivity stops and i can pop that ear. So started all kinds of neck mobility movements and stretches, but i have to do them all damn day. If not, i'm usually feeling boarder line car sick all damn day every day, and the slightest amount of stress, on the job, talking to a lady, in a meeting, it gets worse and sometimes has made me have to bail and vomit. This is ridiculous. It's ruining my life and causing severe depression. I had an mri and it shows some narrowing root passage and some arthritis and disk degeneration or whatever in my main part of my neck, but i don't think they looked up that high. Anyways, it drove me to drinking nightly for two years, because it would take it away, but i started falling apart so now i'm not drinking it's been like 21 days. I'm on lexapro for anxiety and stuff, i just can't get my damn occipital nerve area to stay situated. I can't live nauseated and trying to avoid vomiting every day, i'm single 47 year old that wants my life back and to be there for everyone. I'm seeing a spine surgeon next week. also i can turn my head sometimes and feel a sharp pain behind my inner ear it feels like. I've had bouts of bppv for many years but this is way different. I'm a master at bppv maneuvers now, but this is separate. PLEASE HELP

HIFLEX, Thank you for this in all respects. Many , I mean MANY, doctors don't focus on the seriousness of the Cervical Instabilities and Stenosis , and what this does to Occipital areas including the Traps, the Neck, eyes, Cheeks, teeth, to the bridge of my nose, scalp, and Oh yeah.... TMJ big time. I have cervical disc herniations , DDD, facet arthritis to the extent that my wife shoos me out of the room, due to the loudness of the cricking and cracking of the bones in my neck when I just manipulate the neck due to the pressure & pain. . The Muscles are soooooo tight for over 25 years . Surgeons I have consulted (6_) all said : Maybe I am a candidate for Cervical Fusion surgery, success not really certain. That's why they all say: Maybe. I have other spinal issues from Lumbar stenosis, Dextroscoliosis to 25 degress, Facet Joint Syndrome all up and down , arthritis in the Hips, Knees, and even the ankles now. All of this from a fractured right femur in 1966 from a football injury (I'm 69 now), whereby, when the Body cast was removed after 3 months, the right leg is 1 inch short. Nothing was ordered by the doctor at that time for corrective shoes, etc. After 15 years or so, the problems started to Wield It's Ugly Head. This is the best explanation of this condition I've seen on Line. A Doctor Ross at Caring Medical YOutube videos, has enligtened me about the many , many affects of cervical instabilities: As you describe here : eye pain, blurred vision at times, stabbing pains around the face and eyes, ear aches, TMJ, Trap muscles so tight, IBS , Gastritis, numbness / tingling into the hands, arms and shoulder, even an uneven gait and on and off Bladder issues. Dr. Ross depicts and describes the effects of the Cervical spine with instabilities on the VAGUS Nerve ..... The Big Daddy of the Cranial nerves. I've been to 6 different Chiropractos, 6 different neuro and spinal surgeons here in NY : NYU Langone, Columbia Pres, Mt. Sinai..... No surgery for me. Definetely on the the Lumbar spine - way too much arthritis. I'm going for Pain Managmement sessions but have had epidurals to no real help, Taking Gabapentin, and weening off Prozac. Dr. Ross emphasizing Prolotherapy. Any opinions onm that ? Never heard of it albeit it has been around for a long time. THX for this video.

Such a bummer you've had to deal with issues like this! Very challenging and very much impactful to the emotions. Neck pain/head pain is very hard to ignore! You are spot on about instabilities leading to many, many other issues. Have you been treated by a well trained neuro focused physical therapist? We are definitely not all created or trained equally! integrativedryneedling.com/directory-index/ is a great resource for finding a clinician trained in the style of needling I perform that brings significant relief to my chronic pain patients. WOW.. you have just explained all my symptoms. You have had for 25 years and mine is 14 years now. This occurred from severe fall on sacrum to edge of step in sitting position that felt cracks to each spine up to base of head. I started massage 8 months after injury when physio will not even start looking at it. Then the injury cover was suspended by false orthopaedic report they sanctioned to suspend entitlements...!!! I threw away pain management pain killers / mental injury as they say that I took briefly from 8 - 12 months. I went straight for massage and accupuncture but did not know these muscular facts but knew an overview these are of musculoskeletal origin that the spinal deficits are irritating muscles and nerves to flare due to repeat turning and twisting causing ligament inflammation laxity leading to muscle contraction and shortening. So it is recurrent problem. Cervical fusion is likely going to make it worse, I think. My young neighbour got it and says pain is 5% reduced. A friend in Australia gave me prolotherapy. It was very good as I took at peak of inflamed nerves symptoms. But lately he gave one but of no help as those flares were not there. Your leg shortening is also recurrent issue. Your chiro would have adjusted it but as tendons are tight and shortened they reappear.

Hello! Ear and temple possibly but I would be curious about your sternocleidomastoid muscle. Look up an image of it and do some self assessing seeing if this is tender when you pinch it and prolonged pressure. Sometimes this will refer around eye socket/temple as well as cause ringing in ears/ache in ears. There are many nerves that exit behind/around the ear so some problem solving at play here.

These are the most painful headaches. I do have occipital pain for sure. But I do take Maxalt 10mg (Rizatriptan benzoate) which is the only medication that relieves the throbbing itself. It’s a migraine med but does work for me to relieve the nasty ones. But the soreness and tightness still remain until it refers right back up into the back of my head and over my right eye. At this point in my life I have come to accept headaches are part of my existence. I’m in my mid fifties now and have had headaches of varying degrees since my 20s. If a doctor could find the root of my pain and help me knock it out, it would be life changing for me.

I'm getting sharp pains radiate over the left side of my head around to the front, almost like a zap. I'm also feeling it sometimes shoot to the front of my neck, left side as well. The point of contention seems to be next to the bumpy bone at the base of the neck where the bigger "spine" bones start, but also sometimes feel it in the occipital location, left side again. I will say this, after a back workout all seems to be good and I can seem to fend off issues. When I do get an activation, it's mostly when I'm bending over to pick something up. But also I've felt activations after breathing deep and heavy where my chest is clearly expanding.

Until I thought to use a small Nikken Kenko gold magnet I had I moved it around my entire head .and pressed it on the spots where i felt the worst. To my surprise 10-15 min later the pain went away! Its the worst pain with no relief till this tiny magnet . They discontinued them . But of you can find someone that has some theh must be the tiny gold kenko. Everytime I've had a flareup which is now rare . I get out a kenko magnet ..🙌🙏🙌🙌🙌🙌

@@DSCVsharanabasavaSahukar Back workout I mean torso back; lats, rhomboids, traps etc. The upper traps would engage and get a workout, and that travels to the too of the neck. I took it easy on the back workouts just to be sure. I did also use a tennis ball and roll the back of my neck over it, around the occipital region. I found some really deep painful areas, and worked on pushing in. The pain was a deep pain that would make me feel sick, but also had that feeling of being overly tight. I've not actually noticed any issues, in fact I had forgot about it until I saw your comment. Also, I briefly stretched my front neck muscles. I also did an exercise where I tuck my chin in to my neck (like I'm looking down), and then push my neck backwards to get a bit of a stretch. First time doing this there was a little pop/crackle sound. I think what really took the issue away, was using the tennis ball.

You should come across some very tight spots, work them out. I think I have poor postural issues perhaps, I'm bow getting crackling and popping sounds in my neck lol, but no more pain or sharp electric shots. There is a nerve that goes through the muscle at the occipital location, the small muscle would be tight if you are experiencing similar things. Good luck and report back to us!

I dont understand how pt can help it if its inflamed. Doesnt exercising an irritated muscle make it worse?
@HiFLEXHealthPerformance
@HiFLEXHealthPerformance 3 года назад
Many other tools in the tool box besides exercise! PT has evolved extensively over the years. These patients I do not focus on exercise, at least not initially. Main goals up front are to calm down the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and make sure things can move where they need to move....then we work on stabilizing but that likely does not look like typical exercise youd think of. Ways to reduce inflammation include soft tissue work, dry needle therapy, amino neuro frequency therapy (ANF for short), breathing techniques, mental relaxation techniques, etc. Good question! A bad PT will botch cases like this....we are not all the same!

Ideally nerve blocks, steroid injections with a two gap followed by botox injections in the scm, levator, trap should happen a month a few weeks before PT if you have this imo. Not only will it basically cure the symptoms but the fact is the nerves are inflamed a long with the muscles. As a result, PT won't do any good before hand because everything is inflamed causing a positive feed back loop.

@chelseasmith1556
@chelseasmith1556 4 года назад
I cannot necessarily speak to that as I am not confident in my answer. I would assume so. I have a patient who has stuffiness in his ear that alleviates when I work on these areas. Tinnitus can be associated with nerves around the ear, and be stand alone from ON. So there is a lot of "possibly", but unless I assess someone I steer clear of direct answers if that makes sense.

Could definitely contribute, but there are many structures at play! I often find if I apply pressure to the rectus capitus oblique muscle it often reproduces a common headache pattern of forehead, around eye, or temple. (if you are doing this on yourself, find the bone behind your ear and move about 1 finger width back and down....pushing in you should feel a small dense muscle meet your finger that runs from C2 toward ear). I am so sorry! The patient this video was made for actually had similar experience with walking. He would walk and feel like an ice pick went through his eyeball. Wild! I would highly suggest a skilled PT trained in neuromuscular dry needle therapy. integrativedryneedling.com/directory-index/ This index is not fully up to date but this is the style dry needle treatment I was trained in. Amino Neuro Frequency therapy is also a newer treatment and works when many other things do not as it directly addresses inflammation via frequency. Where are you located?

I also feel discomfort behind my left side face including eye, nose, cheek, jaw and ear. I also notice some swelling on my left cheek. This has been going on since 6 months and now experiencing tinnitus. Could you please help me understand what might be causing this and what could be the treatment options? Thank you:)
@chelseasmith1556
@chelseasmith1556 4 года назад
The fact that walking is helpful is a great sign! Walking causes the body to release endorphins and other naturally occurring chemicals that help with pain reduction. I would absolutely recommend having a good PT or upper cervical specialized chiropractor check you out since you are having some facial swelling. Without assessing you, I don't want to give specific advice. I can say that if I were to experience tinnitus and your symptoms, I would check out how to do some soft tissue work on your sternocleidomastoid muscle as well as very gentle work around the base of the skull. Some pressure points I would also work on are right above the inner corner of the eyebrow (you can feel around and actually feel a little dent/hole where the nerve comes out) as well as middle of the cheek (drop straight down from pupil line until you reach the horizontal line of your nostrils). Apply pressure that is tolerable and wait for it to decrease in tenderness. I am more than happy to do a virtual consultation, but I do charge for them if they are over 15min.
