In this episode I finish the final few linear feet of fillets and 6” wide fiberglass mat on the 2 longitudinals that I attached in the last episode. I fabricate 2 backing plates for the rudder gudgeons out of G-10, a high-pressure fiberglass laminate material. This sheet of G-10 will also be used to replace the core where hardware and the keels will be bolted through it. I go over in detail how I decided to get the desired mast rake angle by installing a mast step that is tilted 4° down from level. To do this on a curved hull I created precise design drawings and scarf cut plywood to match these designs. I show the process of making the scarf cuts. I proceed to attach to the hull the assembly of plywood pieces which form the mast step.
Final footage is of Yann Quenet’s boat Baluchon sailing in Mauritius. Baluchon is a major inspiration for me taking on this project, as Yann has proven this type of pocket-cruiser can be sailed across oceans and around the world.
