THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I get fiberglass all the way around the hull’s outboard side for the first time, by fiberglassing the bare foam of the bow panel, as well as the aft quarters which were not fiberglassed yet on the outboard side. For fiberglassing the aft quarters where the side panels meet the transom I use 2 layers of 1708, a 16cm wide strip with a 20cm wide strip on top. Over that I place a layer of 6oz cloth about 21cm wide to leave a smooth surface and add strength. The bow got a 6oz strip of fiberglass down the middle (I did the same thing on the foredeck to add some cloth for the large foredeck cleat, so I figured I’ll continue it down the bow,) followed by a large 1708 section, and lastly a 10oz cloth section at the end.

Damn, those aft corners look so smooth, really well done Perry!

Coming along nicely. Even when you work diligently it's surprising how long quite small tasks take. You can see why new boats are so expensive.

Except the bottom, but we'll get there as soon as I can flip her, which I hope to do within the next 2 months.

Hi Perry, i think i can see some air bubbles/ pockets in the layers of glass, why don’t you use the metal rollers in large pieces of glass to make sure you get all the air out under the glass? I like your work and how you tackle technical things, keep it going. Greetings from the Netherlands
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
Thanks but there are no bubbles. The roller is OK but after a couple uses they get gunked up with epoxy and it's very difficult to clean them.

Thanks. Obviously the cabin sole is all haze gray, other areas will be white with some seafoam green accents.

It’s great to see this still coming along nicely, having read Yrvinds manifesto I can see a lot of the topics he raises addressed in your boat. Can’t wait to see it hit the water!

Definitely. I read it too.

... well, ... I still have concerns about the lack of inclination of the cabin sides, with a 180 degree floating position, the mast with the remains of the sails as a "counterweight" and their resistance to the rotational movement, your boat could be stucked in a stable "back floating position" ...
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
It's a non-issue because boat's sail heeled over.

Over for the second watch on YT. Good work Captain. Will you be closing in the hull before flipping the boat over to glass the bottom? Have good week, sir.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
Yes sir, I plan to flip her over as soon as I get all the deck panels attached and some small other projects done. I'm hoping to get her flipped over within the next 2 months.

Hei love your project! how do you manage al the fine dust from the router and sliping maskin in your worshop, i see your mask, but you get the dust everywhere, maybe a strong vaccumcleaner and a inner tent helps?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
I haven't used a tent yet. I just vacuum surfaces often. The router is the worst culprit.

Good work mate ⛵️ what brand of epoxy you use ? As west system is quite pricey:)
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
I found epoxy equivalent to West System but a little cheaper from a company in Florida called US Composites. It's still very expensive stuff though.

I dont fuss about safety much but bro, you got to wear safety glasses when you are using a router.

I agree. You can even see I put them on when I moved on to the 2nd corner I routed.

Very nice project. For any people on a diet, I suggest that they start building a copy of your same boat -- they will be forced to stay thin, just to fit into it.
