THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I build and install the 2 foredeck panels to go to port and starboard of the center foredeck panel. Before installing the panels I add a primer and then 2 coats of white oil topsides paint. I also build and install the last remaining pieces of the C3.5 and C4.5 ring frames. I make 3 backing plates for my deck cleats and install the 2 aft ones.

I don’t know what it was about having those deck plates going on upfront but I am so excited. It is really starting to look like the drawings. What a cool project.

Looking great, Perry. I wouldn’t risk breathing those paint fumes. I use the respirators from harbor freight that are rated for organic vapors. They work great and are only around 15 bucks.

hmm really? I'll look into it. I didn't think it was too dangerous since I'm ventilating the space. It is stinky stuff though. It's oil paint.

The progress this time has been fantastic, it's really looking like a boat now. Did you fibre glass the underside of the decks as well?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
Thanks. So far only filets inside. I talk about it some in the next episode coming soon. I'm thinking I'll wait to fiberglass it until the boat's upside down.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Yes, thinking about it, that makes more sense. Have you got any idea what it will weigh at the point you come to turn it upside down and how many people you will need to do it? Having said that, do you know the approximate weight at the moment? My 3.3m (11ft) plywood Mirror dinghy weights 45 kg (100 lbs) and it takes two of us to safely turn it upside down for painting (but I can turn it upside down all on my own on the water with a bit of help from the wind 😁)
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
I have no idea on the weight. I used to be able to move it around the shop on my own a few feet here and there as needed. Tried that again recently and no luck! I think me and 2 others can turn it over. @@tonysutton6559

Hi, What paint did you go for ?. Also I was hoping to see how you glassed around the bow curve, but you jumped passed it, what’s the technique for glassing around such a big curve ?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
It's the Rustoleum topside oil paint. For glassing around the curve I just used long strips of fiberglass and about every foot I did a relief cut from the top down to the mid point of the strip. That kept it from wrinkling up. It got 2 layers of 10oz with 1 layer of 6oz over that.

@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
Yes I'm targeting August, but past predictions have been waaaay off.

Well Done so with this Peel Ply stuff can you come back say a month later peel it off and add fiberglass or epoxy etc so my question is there a time limit on this Peel Ply?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
No time limit, you can peel it off months later and you have a dust-free surface ready to receive paint or more fiberglass. It leaves the surface with texture just like nylon cloth.

How many boats have you seen with deck cleats mounted on the hull?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
Baluchon has them as well. Keeps lines from chafing against the hull/deck edge. Good for tying up to docks or towing drogues. I like it. 👍
@SvenYrvindExlex

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat But his are mounted inside of the widest part of the boat, they wont snag on anything, yours will, unless you are going to make a wide rubbing strake?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
I'm not concerned about it. I won't be out there playing Mad Max with other boats or any pilings, I like to be out in the open spaces.

I am curious what paint you are using. I notice you didnt use a primer. Was it not required for the paint?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
I used a thick primer, then 2 coats of Rustoleum topside.
@rollinrock6696
@rollinrock6696 7 месяцев назад
Why oil paint and not 2 pack?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
Inexpensive and works just fine. Not too worried about the interior. The exterior will get some fancier paints.
@jetson328
@jetson328 7 месяцев назад
So for the paint do you use a epoxy primer first then?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
It's an oil topside paint so I used a good thick primer that says it works under oil paints.
