THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I finish fabricating the deck locker hatch cover latches from G-10. I install their bases on the aft deck with thickened epoxy. The latches are held onto the bases with stainless steel threaded inserts and bolts.

FOD control! Job one! Looking good! Gonna make a detent in the clasp to keep the latches in place?

That's a good idea, I'll think about it. But for now I want to move on to making handrails.

I found some marine grade hatches online and they start out at about 59 dollars and quickly increase in price. I can see why you are making your own .

Haha yes, and none of them are perfectly sized to fit my coaming decks anyway.

I would put a handle or a rigid eyelet on the lid.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I like to keep the lid flush and simple. Leaves the option for sitting there too. It's easy to grab from the edges.

Would it have been simpler and easier hatch to use with hinge on other side and a latch on other? Than this four-latch concept with hatch on hanging with loose line… I was just thinking.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Somehow to me, this is simple. Because with a hinge you have to worry about getting the alignment and height over the gasket perfect. Maybe it's just me but this way appealed to me more. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@SvenYrvindExlex
@SvenYrvindExlex 5 месяцев назад
If something gets between near the hinge axis like a rope it will break the hinge.

Nice job on the hatch ... Now I see what you were referring to a few episodes back when i asked about it. Only thing that I might do there is adjust the length of the leash so that it just has enough slack for the lid to lay up against the inner coaming, that way it tensions the rope so that you do not keep snagging it when accessing the locker to put things in and take things out.

Do you have a retention plan for the latch screws? Rotating the latches will apply torque to the screws. The washer will help to isolate the torque, but it will still work the screw loose. The screws obviously need to have to have some anti rotation friction or preload and yet still allow the latches to rotate. Maybe you have addressed this in a different episode and I don’t remember?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I have some Loctite. That might work. I'll have to test it out.
@joell439
@joell439 5 месяцев назад
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat That’s probably not going to work. Most Loctite formulations only cure in the absence of oxygen. This is typically only achieved when the threads are under load. And that is not the case here. Maybe a dab of pure silicone into the threaded insert prior to inserting the screw will work? It will cure and hold the screw with some level of friction, but not hold it sufficiently that you couldn’t unscrew at some future time. Just need to make sure the surfaces are dry and clean from the Vaseline you applied prior to applying the epoxy to set the inserts.

You could insert little rare earth magnets in the latch pieces and the lid to further help keep them aligned im the closed position.
@SvenYrvindExlex
@SvenYrvindExlex 5 месяцев назад
It is not a good idea for navigation to have magnets. They disturb the compass
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Due to the compasses I have, I don't bring any extra magnets into the boat.

I think that, with your planning and attention to detail, any water getting in will be caused by slow seepage instead of a proper leak. Don't you have any safety glasses? I split my forehead a few weeks ago popping off a bit of wooden trimming while working on our beach hut. It could easily have hit me in the eye if I'd not been wearing safety glasses. I'm not a health and safety freak but I find myself wearing the safety glasses all the time now because they are by-focal with a 2x reading lens at the bottom.
