THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I paint the bottom. I used 3 coats of epoxy primer & barrier coat on the bottom. I then used 2 coats of Spartan anti-fouling paint in black. I also painted the overhead of the cabin with 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of Rustoleum marine oil paint.

For those of you who haven't spent time in the low country Carolina and Georgia, pluff mud is the rich organic soil of swampland.

I agree with the comments that say that you could raise the waterline and antifouling a bit in order to decrease growth in certain areas of the hull. It'd be wise to do it now. Great job, BTW!

I'm happy with this for now, I'll re-evaluate after some sailing and raise it next year if needed. Getting to launch sooner is more important to me.

Anti-fouling isn't suitable for above the waterline, as it isn't UV resistant. There's a trade-off between keeping the area just above the waterline clean of growth, and protecting it with suitable, UV resistant paint.

Good to see the boat out in the open for the perspective on size. Nice paint job.

What was most satisfying, taking the peel-ply off the fibreglass or removing the blue tape and seeing the nice clean line of the bottom paint? BTW, I love the painted thumbnail to go with the painting episode.

Thanks Tony! Peel ply wins for me. Once all the paint is on and the very last blue tape comes off that will be really wonderful to see.

I can't see why anyone would not like overhead handrails! They look practical.
@tonysutton6559
@tonysutton6559 2 месяца назад
It wasn't not liking the overhead handrails, it was the fact that the beatiful wood was going to be painted over. I was one of those who argued lobbied leaving the wood on show, but it's not my boat and I lost.

@billywhizz6483

Looks great and definitely easier to paint the overhead whilst the boat's upside down. My only thought is that I would have brought the waterline out at the two rear quarters to put antifoul on the whole of the underside... those two rear quarter areas are going to get a lot of seawater splashing and will get pretty green and fouled up in my view.

Thank you! You may well be right, but I've added 1.5" above the theoretical waterline. I don't want it to be TOO high or to me it will look pretty silly sitting in the water. Once I get out for some sailing I can re-evaluate and raise it if needed next year.

I understand painting the bottom with the barrier coat, but not the bottom paint. Bottom paint is usually added last, especially ablative paint (looks like what you put on, unless i am mistaken). With the keel work yet to be done you are going to be getting bottom paint all over you every time that you rub up against it. This is not to mention that you have not set up the paint on the hull sides yet -- now when you go to set the water line with tape, you have to stick the tape to the ablative paint (usually done the other way around) -- it may give you a hard time sticking or may pull large quantities of the ablative off when you remove it. I hope that I'm wrong about the type of paint, but that finish looked just like an ablative finish. Lastly, I would caution leaving that water line so low, particularly at the aft corners ... that flat surface is likely to be constantly wet from splashing on the flat surface in wave conditions or while sailing at heel -- nothing ruins the look a a good paint job faster than developing that brownish discoloration at the transition point between the anti-fouling and the gel coat!
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat

I would have to do a big sanding job on the barrier coat if I had waited. Applying the bottom paint within hours of the barrier coat saves me from all that work. The time is valuable to me because I want to get to a launch sooner than later. Regarding the waterline, I've added 1.5" above the theoretical waterline, I don't want it to be TOO high or to me it will look pretty silly sitting in the water. Once I get out for some sailing I can re-evaluate and raise it if needed next year. Luckily with a small boat, jobs like these aren't too big of a deal.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboatI just like your project, like the long term perseverance, it’s been a weakness of mine and so it’s good to see something come to fruition. I am very good at short term 3 month projects and the like, also very good when involved in something with others with some sort of established institutional backing. The long term self motivated thing has been a weakness, been too easily distracted, liked to do too many things. Ran my own business for a long time though but got burned out. Problem solving in context of a long term goal of practical value gets my attention especially to do with sailing, even though I never really sailed. It’s like the ultimate adventure. I would love to sail from here in Western Australia to Africa.

the clocks ticking now you put bottom paint on ,you should,ve left that until you had definite launch day set , check with your paint manufacturer anti foul has a time limit some give you max 3 months to get it in the water ,i think it then dries out turns powdery and falls off best to have done a few days before launch
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 2 месяца назад
I disagree. I would have to do a big sanding job on the barrier coat if I had waited. Applying the bottom paint within hours of the barrier coat saves me from all that work. This brand of paint can be applied up to 18 months before launch and I intend to be sailing within 6 months.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat ok just i was going to anti foul my boat and could,nt find any that gave me more than 6 months before launch but if you,ve found a brand thats more ,i was told by one supplier i,d have to sand it all off and redo if it did,nt get soaked in water within the recommended time

How far apart are your keels? Those masking patches make them look really close.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 2 месяца назад
As far apart as I could get them, the bolts have to pass through my oak keel support beams that run athwartships along the flat bottom panel. They do cant out 15° each so that helps get them further apart at the ends. We'll get into it in a future keel video and I'll try to remember say those measurements for ya.

Max speed? Who knows, maybe you could hit 22 knots surfing down a big swell with a strong breeze behind you! Average cruising speed should be 4 to 5 knots though.
