There you have it, folks - scenes overrule P-Locks. Knowing this, you can lock your A-scene to any number of p-locked parameters, allowing for a plethora of different "hidden" rhythms hidden across your different scenes. A new way to get more mileage out of ongoing stems and such!
Bit of an unintentional hiatus last week, but we are back on track! I will say, I've been thinking about the Octatrack a little differently. It's very much a practical means to an end lately, and my videos have always served a practical purpose in my own creative endeavors, so likely you'll see an adjustment in the videos. I'm really looking to push myself in the "improvised set" realm, so you'll likely start seeing a bit more of those around here in the coming months. As always, thanks for watching!

Thank you! This one simple idea definitely comes back to haunt me whenever I'm working with scenes :) Definitely a good one to keep in mind!

Great! I'll definitely try this technique in the future! I guess a variation of this method would be to affect track parameters on the fly on a certain track and don't hear them take effect until you go to an empty scene.

Hey Kenny, Thanks so much for not only this great video, but all of your videos on the Octa that really show how much you've delved into the machine and made it your own. I'm not sure if it's a bug with my octa or I have a setting wrong but I'm not able to get the trigless trigs to affect the loops from a previous pattern, they simply have no effect. If however, I set up a new trig on the second pattern, the trigs start to take effect. Similarly the tune and level parameters affect the loop when changed manually but not when assigned to a scene. Any ideas on why this might be so? Thanks in advance

Hi Kenny! Thanks for these awesome “kinda advance” tutorials. Just to be sure. I kinda grasp the idea but “and this is probably a very beginner question”....when you change patterns, to those dummy patterns with triggles locks for example...what has to be done in order that the original stem keeps playing in sync and doesn’t drift since is not being trigged within those dummy patterns with trigless trigs.

Thanks for watching! In order for the track to play in sync you have to make sure the Octatrack knows what the tempo is. Typically I sync my tracks in Ableton first, so they don't ever go off the BPM. And then I tell the Octatrack what the BPM is directly.

Hey Kenny I gotta question for ya. Why is it that your one shot trigs don’t need to be re-armed for them to trigger again?

Sidney T that’s cuz they’re not one-shot trigs :) I prefer setting them up with the “1st” condition, which resets them whenever you stop playback, or return to the pattern from a different pattern. You can set this up by holding the trig and pressing the right arrow

interesting ... a bit hard to get the head around this ... but you switch side A and B _ effects are on side A and you remove it with scene B ... just not getting the head around what the benefit is (for me) beside ergonomic that B is mane channel and A is effect

There's a bit more to it than that. Imagine you have a pattern with all kinds of P-locks: filter, FX, LFO, volume. With Scene A you lock the volume to neutral 0, Scene B has no locks. When you play this pattern, your volume p-locks are essentially "hidden" behind Scene A until you shift to Scene B. With drastic P-locks (muting the gain, or closing the filter) this can create the effect of having multiple rhythms embedded in a single sequence, all within a single pattern. Different scenes can reveal different P-locks in the sequence this way.

@@KennyZhao Hi Kenny - sorry for this question on an ancient video (all of which are excellent btw - many thanks for these) - but quick question. Why do it this way rather than just use scenes as normal? Ie using scenes to reveal fx/settings as usual? Is it because this way it can be done on a trig by trig basis using p-locks - is that the point? Cheers if obvious, just wanted to confirm. And btw - please continue with these intermediate tutorials - perfectly pitched between straight up beginner and advanced and from a musician’s point of view (not an ‘influencer’ etc!)

@@BillThompsonSoundArtist yeah, that's the point, instead of a scene level change, it's changes on each individual step of every pattern, which can be hidden by having the neutral locks in the A scene here. If you change the filter and delay amount on each step, that'll sound very different than one scene that changes the filter to X and delay to Y.
