Octave Pedals - Before or After Overdrive?

All pedals used in this video linked below.
Today I set out to do a little comparison for myself. I had always assumed that octave / harmonizing / pitch shifting -type pedals should go at the beginning of the chain because they need to be able to track as well as possible but through a few RU-vid videos and a friend, I realized I might have been wrong. Here I'm comparing a few different types of distortion pedals against octave pedals and you'll be able to hear for yourself what people are talking about.
For business, lessons, & questions: / alexpricemusician
My thoughts?
I actually do enjoy the overdrive before the octave effects in a lot of situations. In most of the cases, the octave tone sounds more natural this way. There seems to be a trade off at some point though where you're trading tone for tracking ability. The OC-3's tracking gets worse and worse as you add in more distortion, however initially I think it sounds better with a bit of drive or compression in front. The EHX Nano POG's tracking holds up all the way until we get into heavy distortion and in every scenario to me sounds more natural with the overdrive before.
By nature, overdrive compresses the signal and excites harmonic content so the tracking issues make sense. Especially with the OC-3, sometimes the octave pedal can mistake these harmonics for the fundamental tone and it'll pitch shift those frequencies instead of what you're intending it for.
Hope you enjoy!

Ocrave before = more drive signal Octave after = more octave signal

Boss OC3 is digital and polyphonic (tracks chords pretty well). The OC2 is analog.

Great comparison. I prefer the octave after. I think the imperfections thicken things up, and add more character to the sound overall.

As always, great comparison. No bullshit - just back to back samples and I appreciate that. I've always put my micro pog first for the same reason you mentioned at the beginning but now I'm rethinking. I think I'll get to it tomorrow

IMO Analog: octave after compression and light overdrive; octave before medium overdrive and all distortion Digital: octave after * with the dry signal in the mix you can hear the difference between the two approaches in context of the most common use/sound of the octave effect ** this is a bass guitar perspective...a bass guitar (frequency range) responds differently to the octave effect (than an electric guitar) so there’s a different approach to using it (the effect); it depends on what/how you are playing/using/manipulating the parameters of the effect pedal/processor *** “feel” doesn’t come from guitar effect pedals; we manipulate(“feel”) the effects of the “guitar/pedal/instrument/processor/tool/device”

I like the digital pedal better because it sounds much brighter and less muffled, but that may just be the setting. I would assume analog does not "track" at all, (the original Octavia pedal Hendrix used does not track at all, its noise is inter modulation distortion and not tracking error). In each case the octave pedal after distortion sounds more like several voices while before distortion it sounds more like a single voice, which is what one would expect. I notice little tracking error in ether case so prefer the distortion before the octave pedal for that multi voice sound, conventional wisdom misses the boat so no wonder people are defying it, with distortion a little tracking failure would probably be a good thing anyway!

Hey thanks for the stellar comparison vid! Just in case someone hasn’t already mentioned it, your 609 is backwards. The side that says “front” is the side that should face the amp and the logo side is the back of the mic. Feel free to delete this comment if you already know this.

Glad it was helpful! Maybe you have a different version of the 609, but the side that says front (gray side) is facing the amp

The Rat before the OC-3 sounded whack but after it was seriously badass. Those first few notes you played in the low register were nuts.

In pretty old school.... I bought both my Rat and OC3 new when they came out. For some reason that is the only way that those two can get along. With analog pedals, pedal order is almost more important than the pedals themselves.
@joaoelbert_

the demo is neat, but you should have left the dry signal at least at noon for the pog examples so it could be more in tune with the real life application of the pedal. i know that the intention was to evidence the octave effect and how it would react before and after dirt, but it would also be nice to see (or hear) the results blended against the dry signal. ps: you are a sick player

The analog octave divider before OD sounds better to my ears at least.However, the digital sounded good any way.

OC2 doesn’t like many highs being sent into it which is why it has tracking issues when OD is before.

I have an octave pedal that I keep moving but it sounds horrible with distortion before. I have the rare ehx octave multiplexer that has horrible tracking lol. It's a cool lil fuzzy pedal if you flip the sub switch off. One day I hope to get the pog. I sold my pro co rat from 93 and ds1 because my line 6 uber metal can make the exact sound of a rat. And I had the "good chip" in the rat. Sold it for $150. The boss sounds so much better than my ehx, I need that too lol

@simaojoseph

As in design; it really depends on the application, and therefore the rest of the pedals on your board. I use this on bass for octave up stuff, and in conjunction with an FZ2 style o fuzz which is by it self “octaving”, the results are even harder to predict. So trial/error is mandatory. Thanks for this upload.

Octave before. I like your original thought, for the digital, that it needs the cleanest sound to track well. After was too muddy for me. For some, that muddy and low octave sound is preferred for some genres. But in my case, I don't like the over-clipped tone. POG for me.

IME, the shitty cheap, analog chinese pitch shifters sound amazing when you hit them with heavy fuzz and distortion, they sound like B3 organs, with octave down on.

Guitar signal to octave, then compression, then drives etc. you won’t get that weird stutter.

Do the words before and after mean the opposite when talk about pedals? I don’t really understand. When the drive is on the left of the octave, going into the octave which then goes into the guitar, isn’t the drive before the octave?
@AlexPriceMusician
@AlexPriceMusician 4 года назад
Before and after refers to the octave pedal. “Octave pedal before distortion” in other words. The one that is first in the chain will be on the right.

Hey Alex, is the RAT2 a good option for high gain overdrive for Jazz? Or will that be an overkill? Planning to get one High Gain or borderline-distortion overdrive to play along with a Strat through a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Already have the Mini TS and BD2.
@AlexPriceMusician
@AlexPriceMusician 3 года назад
I believe Scofield used a Rat for awhile! There are definitely some nice fusion tones on the lower end of the gain spectrum with that pedal. I think with a tubescreamer and a Blues Driver you’ll have a nice selection.
@shashankraman2512
@shashankraman2512 3 года назад
@@AlexPriceMusician Thanks for the reply man! That's what I thought, the OD range in the RAT2 seems to be really limited till 10 o'clock. I'm planning to settle for a Strymon Sunset so it'll be TS mini -> BD2 -> Sunset. Let me know what do you think of this new set up?

@@AlexPriceMusician Also, would you prefer a neck humbucker or a neck single-coil on a Fender Stratocaster for the Jazz tones?

Very cool video, thank you for sharing the comparison! I liked the analog Boss better in front of overdrive as most people, and the POG went on nicely on both sides to my ears. The video prompted me to play around with my own pedalboard, octaver is TC Electronics' Sub'n'up (digital), and this one definitely works better before overdrive and fuzz (at least in my setup). After overdrive sounded like a tin can, not cool. May not be the case for everyone's rig, though, as always one should try out for themselves and see what works best for a particular scenario. Cheers!

half the pedals I got was when I started I'm like I'm gonna do everything exactly how Tom Morello did this was 2005 when I first started playing I prefer wah in effects loop and phase 90 before distortion I know I'm weird 😂 used to run whammy in effects loop too

@sbesbesbe

Overdrive goes after or else it sounds muddy. Just think of the pitch shifter as adding another guitar or bass to your signal. You wouldn't put that individual instrument after the distortion. Think of the pitches as the clean tone that gets sent through distortion. Putting the pitch shifter after the distortion sounded like ass, NGL.
@jakevidovich7851
@jakevidovich7851 4 года назад
I prefer before the drives. When it’s after it seems to hide more of the drive besides the rat that is, no containing that thing hahaha.
@AlexPriceMusician

Jake Vidovich me too, mostly. In some cases it gets too distorted for the octave pedal to work well though :/
@jakevidovich7851

I have the POG that I put before the drives but my drive has two circuits pb and J viper drive. It’s very transparent and you can increase the drive on the low end and the high end. So it works really well with it.
