Watch the first annual Octavia Hill Lecture from the National Trust, in collaboration with Times Radio. Join guest speaker, Neil MacGregor (writer, broadcaster, historian and former director of the British Museum and National Gallery) as he reflects on our national history and culture through the lens of places and objects in the care of the National Trust.
The lecture explores our shared past and our place in the world today. Looking at whose stories are told, who tells them and whose voices are missing, Neil MacGregor addresses key themes of today, including how historical approaches and narratives may change as nations change, and how we use and interpret the past to help shape the future.
With a focus on the significance of history in telling our national story, Neil takes inspiration from Octavia Hill, one of the National Trust’s founders, and her inspiring words about ‘mighty issues of the new and better days to come’.
The histories, people and artefacts explored in this talk are drawn from a variety of landscapes, places, properties and houses in the care of the National Trust, including: Long Crendon Courthouse, Buckinghamshire; Rievaulx Terrace, York; Clandon House, Clandon Park, Surrey; Penrhyn Castle and Garden, North Wales; Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire and Castlefield Viaduct, Manchester.
The lecture is followed by a panel discussion to explore these topics further, broadcast on the Times Radio RU-vid channel (see link below). Chaired by Times Radio presenter Aasmah Mir, the panellists joining Neil include broadcaster and founder and creative director of History Hit Dan Snow MBE as well as Times journalist and best-selling author, Sathnam Sanghera, and historian, author and broadcaster Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. You can find the panel discussion here:
