WABC Eyewitness News covers the Yankees winning their first AL pennant since 1964! Long-time WABC anchor Bill Beutel co-anchors with Tom Ellis (who I believe was later a Boston anchor. Roger Grimsby was the 6 PM co-anchor). Sal Marchiano does the sports recap of the game which ended with Chris Chambliss's dramatic walk-off home run, while John Johnson is in the crowd outside the Stadium for the celebration.

Gosh i love Ellis' introduction to the newscast, "Good evening everybody, I'm Tom Ellis and you know what the story is tonight. And John Johnson is at that story...". Hands down a brilliant opening to a post-game newscast

John Johnson. That is the way to perform live on the air. Forget the information, just go with the energy of the crowd, the boss won't punish you for making good television.

I believe an officer who was in between the fence & the bleachers retrieved it and gave it to Chambliss. I know Chambliss put his jersey & bat up for auction a few years back, but if I'm not mistaken he still has the baseball.

Chambliss homered at precisely 11.43 pm. By the time ABC got through with all the post game coverage, it had to be close to or past midnight. Every other TV station had already had their late news, during which this game was still going on. This game was also on WPIX Channel 11 in New York. I prefer Phil Rizzuto's call, but Keith Jackson's was fine too. The problem was Cosell interrupted him.
@epaddon
@epaddon 8 лет назад
WPIX had their own newscast right after the game coverage signed off there. It's a pity the full telecast of the WPIX game doesn't exist because as the clip we have seen elsewhere on YT shows, they had better camera shots than ABC of the moment (they not only had a CF shot when Chambliss hit it they also got a terrific isolation shot of him throwing up his arms in triumph as he saw it was out that ABC managed to miss completely).
@dzanier
@dzanier 8 лет назад
I've watched that clip over and over and over, and I also prefer it. WPIX has better shots (love the center field as opposed to behind the plate on ABC). WPIX not only had great broadcasters, there coverage of the game was in every way as good if not better than ABC or NBC.
@epaddon
@epaddon 8 лет назад
I recently came into possession of full TV audio of WPIX from the 7th inning to signoff. A future project may involve synching that audio to the ABC video up to the point where we have the extant WPIX video.

I’m still (~amazed) (for lack of better word at the moment) that practically LESS than ONE SECOND after the ball goes over the fence, the home run fence doors open, and about 20+ security (or police) storm out. - & technically the game wasn’t even over yet, until Chambliss finishes running the bases. - Was this discussed before hand? “Hey, if there’s a Walk-off home run, them we (security) barged onto the field instantaneously” - Were All 20+ of them already “pressed” against the door?, at the start of the inning? (in anticipation in case this happens?) - It would take at least a few seconds for that many people to even reach the actual door (from the large amount of space/gap behind the wall) - You barely could get 20+ people to come out a of burning building that fast.

@dzanier
@dzanier 8 лет назад
Yes. This is the most dramatic moment of the last 50 years of Yankees baseball. Boone's homer isn't even close. The 12-year drought and the way it ended, on one swing of a tense back and forth game, make this moment number 1 on my list. The fan reaction represents the euphoria of having a dark period finally come to an end.
@wmbrown6

Ellis and once-and-future Detroit anchor Bill Bonds were both hired by WABC in 1975 while Beutel was off co-hosting "AM America." (Ellis originally co-anchored with Grimsby at 6 whilst Bonds was on with Roger at 11.) By this time Bonds was back in Detroit at WXYZ-TV, so by then Beutel had joined Ellis at the 11 P.M. anchor desk. Ellis lasted only a bit longer at WABC before returning to Boston.
@epaddon
@epaddon 8 лет назад
And after Ellis, WABC then brought in Larry Kane from Philadelphia who proved a total misfire.

The New York Yankees didn't win the world series in 1976 the following year they won the 1977 world series then again in 1978 when they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers twice in the world series but in 1976 the Cincinnati reds beat our Yankees however the Yankees won the pennant race it was a 12 year old drought since the New York Yankees last won in 1962
