I'm in zone 7B, just North of Atlanta, and have two of these in full, all-day sun. They were planted two years ago, were covered with blooms last Fall, and are heavily budded again this year. The foliage is beautiful and disease free.

You're welcome! I hope they do as well for you as they have for me. I added an October Dawn last fall with the same exposure and am expecting it to to well. @@JM-lo8xu

There have been a number of times when I have had to tell gardeners from Northern states that not all evergreens are conifers. They don't know about camellias or magnolias or other delightful Southern evergreens.

Mine is budded up but no blooms as of yet. I just love this plant and look forward to it getting a bit of growth on it. I have a row of japonicas that were here when we moved in. They were forced into more sun when we had a tree removed. They pouted a bit that first year but have adjusted well to more sun and bloom profusely now.

How timely, you told me about this last week when we had our consultation, Jim, I am really excited to get at least one of these. Thank you again for a great consultation!

Great video! Always love camellia coverage. We’ve found that many of ours take about 2 years before they take off.

Oh ok that’s good to know - I planted one of these (October magic inspiration) last spring, it’s got a TON of unopened buds right now, I’m in northern virginia, 7A - wondering when / if they will open - my rose of Sharon planted at same time had a ton of buds this summer too but they never opened.. it’s hard to be patient and not to worry…

I screwed up and just purchased one of these in zone 7a (it was on sale for 50% off so I couldn't resist!). I don't have a garage to keep it in over winter, so I'm wondering if I can bury it in its pot over winter rather than planting it now.

I just bought an "Autumn sentinel" which is also from Bobby Green, and also narrow / upright / light pink.

Looking to push the growing limits of Camellia Japonica to zone 10a SW Florida. Jim, do you have one or two suggestions. Not fussy about color somewhat limited on garden space have options to grow in any light condion. Thank you

This is the perfect potential size for what I need, and I'm looking for evergreen. I was in zone 6b but they changed the zones slightly and I'm in 7a now. I'm questioning this plant's ability to survive now in my area.... it's be in more shade than sun, and on a slight slope but right against/next to my house under a window. Any thoughts?

Love this plant 💚 yours has grown a good bit! I have a small one that was newly planted this spring. I’m impressed with how well it does in full sun. Hasn’t put on new growth yet but it’s loaded with flowerbuds. Checking it every day for the first flower 🌸 Do they flower a bit later further south where it’s warmer?

I love camellias but live in Ohio zone 6a. Any varieties that might work in my area? Thanks for all your videos - they are so informative and succinct.
@LinusCello75

Look for the varieties developed by Will Ackerman (e.g. April series).
@mdwalker3034
@mdwalker3034 Год назад
In addition to selecting from the Ackerman series, think about planting in a warmer microclimate in your yard. In a protected foundation location, away from drying/cold winter winds. May have to protect with burlap covering during a real cold snap. I am in 7a and have several zone 8 plants that are growing slowly/successfully by following these guidelines. Jim’s instructions on how to plant camellias is spot on and a must. Good luck!

Eyeing this beauty! I know it’ll sell out on plantsbymail once you make a recommendation. 😃 my back garden in the fall/winter gets sun from about 2-sunset. But in the summer it’s 12-8or9. Will that excessive sun in the summer cause any issues for fall blooms?
