In every contest where I voted, I had this as my personal game of the year. It should have at least won best music because the soundtrack was second to none. Incredible work from Square enix. PS--I did do all the side quests and hidden bosses. 134 hours on the final save.

They also added the characters acknowledging eachother in battle, like after a break the next character will congratulate the traveler that broke/defeated an enemy, that counts towards healing/reviving a traveler as well, or if one if the travelers are KO'd/critical hp. Added unique skills for the travelers, via EX skills or Latent Powers really adds more diversity to the gameplay Added animations to the bosses, a LOT more voice acting compared to OT1, and a lot more improvements overall. Some things are different (like recruiting certain travelers and the ending having a minor change for the protagonist you chose), adding more replayability, that and you being able to use many different combinations of jobs and characters throughout the game. And the music, really slaps hard, for both OT1 and OT2, though the night versions of the area themes are sublime and imo the best (non combat music change, because man, the transitions are so good in both OT games) related change to the music You can notice the changes and improvements of OT2 if you play OT1 after OT2, though OT1 is still fun to play through. I just balance between the two games, OT2 if i want to wind down or relive some epic moments, and OT1 for some of the brutal bosses or random encounters in a challenge run.

My preferences in gaming has shifted a lot in the last 6 years. When OT1 released I knew I wouldn’t like it at all, I liked the style but the gameplay wasn’t for me at all. 3 years ago I started to get some enjoyment out of turn-based JRPGs and in those years I’ve played a lot of them. Last year was filled with games so OT2 went a bit under my radar but I’m circling back to it now. Decided I want to play it so I looked at both OT games and what I got out of the general opinions is that OT2 is the definitive version of the franchise concept so that’s the one I’m going with. Really excited to play it. I doubt I’ll be able to finish it before Rebirth releases but this is a nice game to keep me busy till the 29th and after that it will be a nice change of pace between gaming sessions playing OT2 and Rebirth back to back

@Onioncreature

Yeah in my opinion the grind wasn't that bad, there are random encounters tho. Some of the character abilities allow you to have less encounters and if you use items and abilities strategically you probably wouldn't need to grind too much.

OT1 is a lot similar to Champions of the Continent in terms of the random encounters, but with 4 travelers instead of 8, and without a speed boost, whereas OT2 has a 2x Speed option for battle, and night time for more exp but tougher monster encounters (Certain jobs also have some support skills that buff exp, jp, etc, but for the most part with the right strategy you can take down any encounter) So if you want an experience closer to Champions of the Continent without a speed boost for battle, OT1, for more Quality of life OT2 (OT2 also has a demo you can play to test the waters.) But regardless, which one you choose i hope you can enjoy the game

BG3 is GOTY and RPG of the year but to me octopath 2 is JRPG of the year like its legendary adaption on the first, only bits that i didnt like was how easy the game was as it had no difficulty slider, 100% the game within 50 hours oneshot vide and only needed single digit pulls on geldara. Outside how easy the game is would've loved more main story screentime with the entire party. square has found the recipe to make fun short sized bits off story for each unique character even the duo stuff i liked but to me vide arc could've lasted x10 as it felt great having the whole party interacting.

I personally think that the core reason why JRPG was able to sweep through thousands of armies in the past is that compared to that era when technical skills were weak The narrative technique of JRPG is very outstanding, far surpassing other game types of the same era. In those days, if you wanted to enjoy a good script while playing games, JRPG was definitely the best choice. No other game type could compete with it. As hardware performance improves, JRPG's advantage in storytelling has almost disappeared. There are only very outstanding long script novels left that are suitable for this type of game story. The problem is that the performance of the hardware has improved, but the level of Japanese story writers has not been significantly upgraded along with the hardware. The number of so-called "extremely outstanding long script novels" is simply a handful. If you don’t believe me, go check out the remake of Live A Live. Among the new JRPGs in the past ten years, they are purely based on plot and character creation. Which ones can reach the level of this remake? I can only give 7 points to the story of octopath 2, no more. It’s a work that’s okay in general, but has a lot of problems with small details. More than qualified, but still far away from excellence The most outrageous detail that is not handled properly is that these 8 people got together inexplicably. Everyone's story is independent and "unrelated". This way of handling the script is really perfunctory. Octopath Traveler 2, you won’t lose money if you buy it, but you won’t lose money if you don’t buy it For me, it’s a work that can be played or not played. After so many years, when will JRPG scripts receive a large-scale upgrade?
@jandreplayz9833
@jandreplayz9833 7 месяцев назад
I'd recommend the Legends of Heroes: Trails of Series for a great story and experience, though you will be reading *a lot* of dialogue. You can play in any order, but the later games in the timeline will have subtle references you probably will miss without prior knowledge to the older games, and that the time flows between most of the games (mainly Sky trilogy happening a few years before zero, and Cold Steel 4 taking place alongside Azure, with Reverie taking place after both prior mentioned games.) But for a start, I'd say Sky First Chapter, Zero or Cold Steel 1 For a timeline; Trails of the Sky Trilogy -> Trails from Zero -> Trails to Azure -> Trails of Cold Steel 1-4 -> Trails into Reverie as the finale.
@computervision557
@computervision557 7 месяцев назад
@@jandreplayz9833 I have played all the games you recommended, and the plot is indeed handled very well. I think it’s great that NPCs will grow up along with the plot. But I gave up on Trails of Cold Steel after playing 2, because the level of the plot dropped too much. I can accept the outdated game graphics and uninteresting combat system of this series, but I can't stand the decline in the quality of the script. If the key point is not done well, no matter how well the other parts are done, it will be meaningless to me.

Square enix is the ultimate Japanese 3rd party publisher, the only reason i played OT2 is because they released the game on PS5, no square enix games should be published by Nintendo or Sony, their games deserve to be published across all platforms, the more platforms these games release on the better, they obviously sell much better this way and get in the hands of more people, dont you want these games to be successful, thats not going to happen to exclusives, why do you think OT2 sold so much better than OT1 or Triangle Strategy, because it released on Playstation, now millions more people are going to buy and play the game compared to switch exclusives that only see switch sales and because of this those switch exclusives are extremely niche by comparison

@genjiharvester1876
@genjiharvester1876 8 месяцев назад
Yes and no... I do think that shuffling new characters in and out of the party can add a lot to the strategy aspect. It can be a lot of fun experimenting with how the different classes can effectively synergize, especially once you start finding the secondary job licenses. Effectively, each character synergizes with themselves in interesting ways, and then this compounds through your chosen party makeup in some really fun and potentially intricate ways that really pay off given how challenging many of the fights can be. This is to say that getting all the characters very much reinforces what can be so addicting about the strongest aspects of the core gameplay: how rewarding it is to explore the world (sniffing out all the side dungeons and shrines, some of which are fairly well hidden); and how meaningful those discoveries and rewards can be given how strategic the battle system can be. So I guess the best answer to your question might be summarized thus: If you really like exploring and battling, in theory, but you're just finding it to be a little less than satisfying, in practice, it might be worth allowing things to play out a good ways more. Pick up a bunch more characters, make an effort to build them up the first breezy 10-15 levels, find some of those secondary jobs and other rewards, try your hand at a few of the more challenging boss fights relative to your current level. Really give it a chance to start to come together. Make an effort to poor over your setup and consider how it all fits together. Play intentionally. Make the quest progression your own inasmuch as you can. Having all the party members to shuffle around can allow you to reach a general parity with the "recommended levels" of each area, allowing for a nice sense of challenge most of the time. If you play too long with only a few characters, it'll be more difficult not to become overpowered for a lot of the early content, which could add to the boredom. And I agree with the video commentary that all of them are a lot of fun to use. On the other hand, if you aren't enjoying the combat/exploration really much at all or aren't in any way excited by the potential for it to get a lot more interesting, it might be that this kind of game just isn't your bag. My only main criticism is that I wish the writing was a good bit smarter. I think much of the dialog is just too "on the nose" and some interactions are overwritten and otherwise bloated with overlong pauses between the lines. Too often a character will just monologue at length about something we've already seen portrayed or played though ourselves. Characters will repeatedly restate their personal goal or react to something in such an obvious way, none of which serves to reveal anything new, or interesting, or subtle, or deeply contextual, about the stated goal and/or character. The non-linear nature of the overall progession, while it adds a lot to the exploration/strategy aspect, does compromise the ability to have more interesting drama/character interactions, as this would necessarily involve characters that the player may not have obtained. It's also very, very "tropy" writing, although, this can be largely forgiven considering how ambitious it is to have 8 viewpoint characters in the first place. But in basically every other aspect, I think Octopath 2 is exceptional and I would stick with it a bit longer unless the above third graph applies to your experience.

Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 are very basic games. The music is good in an old school way, but the characters are half-baked, the storytelling is meh, the characters are vanilla as can be, and the difficulty is non-existent. I cannot fathom the people who seem to think it's this huge leap forward for the franchise, and a should-be game of the year contender. In every way that matters, it's the exact same game as the original- a safe, unambitious, cozy rpg. And to think this game should win RPG of the year over BG3 and FF16, or best music over FF16 and AW2 is a total joke.
