Oculus 1.6 Update Allows Up To 4 Sensors! (Mounts, Cables, & More)

After updating my Oculus Firmware to 1.6 I tested out a few more sensors and by golly it worked! You can add UP TO 4 sensors (no more) registered at one time.
I just got home and saw a few people had some questions so I thought I'd make a quick video and answer them as best as possible. In this video I briefly explain how I have been mounting my sensors on the ceiling as well as go over a basic run through of what cables I am using and how I have my breakout set.

Btw about audio switching - there's a tool called SetSoundDevice - easy to use, no body movement. Just set an exe for a device and another exe for another device and click them when you want to change. No going to sound devices.

Using 4 sensors what is the good distance between one sensor and another in square meters?

ive had them 12+ ft apart, there are many ways to set yourself up with the sensors) if you see the shiny part it sees you!

Couple questions: Were do you get more sensors for the oculus? Also, were do you get that breakout cable? I tried extending my oculus with extenders and found that the HMDI extender would occasionally stop working and I get a 1-2 second black screen. So when flying in VR (my main VR use) it was very scary flying 20 feet off the ground and going blind. So looking for a better extending solution.

Do the sensors work good upside down? I really want to put them on my ceiling but wasn’t sure. Also I was thinking that you can probably pre-drill three screws into the bottom plate of the sensor and just put those on your ceiling.

Hi, just saw this as my first video of yours. I will be looking at the others. I'm curious as I didn't see the answer clearly... do the four sensors work that much better than the two? I'm having terrible time loosing positioning with two sensors. Also, I assume curling mounting them is best (seeing as you made custom ceiling mounts- any info on ceiling vs desk/straight on?

I personally think that the ceiling gives better coverage as it's much harder to hide the hmd or controllers. Try 3 first and go for 4 if you want an even bigger area)

It's cause im a bit odd in my youtube approach. I purposefully make my videos a bit rough around the edges and have never asked people to subscribe to my channel. It's nice to see people just doing it because they enjoy the content. I've never joined a network either and I believe they help people get promoted. I usually post my videos to youtube and twitter and thats it. still the small community that communicates with me is great!) I'm just happy when I can help others get involved and have fun)) Thanks for the comment Senator!!

you might already had your answer, but if not here it is: you put the oculus rift (or any device like a tv or whatever) as the DEFAULT sound, so when you unplug the hdmi +usb cable (in the case of the oculus), it will automatically go to another device (most likely your computer if that's the only other hardware connected) if you plug the oculus back it will switch to it automatically since it is the Default sound.

love all the informational content. how does your developer relationship with oculus work? I'm guessing you wouldn't have bought 4 rifts to get for sensors. or even threw since you got one with the touch. and have you experimented with any USB splitters to see if you can bypass getting cards for the chassi.

I have friends near by that also have equipment) When using two sensors I have used little x4 3.0 hubs that work just fine with two sensors. I haven't tried it much with more than that so I still need to do some testing)

LOVE your setup and passion! Also, I would love to purchase eight (8) ceiling mounts, however, I prefer something other than blue.. haha! (White or Black would work!) Great brother just placed my order! Another question that i have is cause i see you talking about wire length for the sensor and bc im new to the vr family can you please tell me what wires to use for more than 15ft? i want to put the 4 sensor around the living room and i dont want cables hanging and looking messy. certainly you do not NEED them to do proper room scale, 2 Oculus sensors will work just FINE for room scale as I have demonstrated)

I've mounted my cameras upside down on the ceiling but after room setup Oculus puts the floor above my head when setting up the central position scan. Should it automatically know that they are inverted or do you need to configure it somehow?

Dude from experience, how much does having 3 sensors help as apposed to having 2? I just got touch and Superhot, problem is that it sometimes requires you to turn around. Problems galore when it does :(

if you put two sensors in a diagonal setup youll be alright, still I think three will be most common for the average user that wants proper 360 coverage. Like I said I had great results with just two sensors setup similar to the VIve as I showed in videos. Still I think 3 allows for more robust tracking. If I only had 3 I probably wouldn't buy a fourth, but if I had only 2 then I would be buying a third)

Reality Check VR damn it. I would happily buy an extra even without touch just for the sake of reducing occlusion. I play a lot of flight sim in VR and do a lot of leaning to look over. Easy to block a single sensor.

yes, even with just two sensors, it will be roomscale like the Vive. Both sensors come with their products

also, do you think it would work if i use a 4 port usb 3.0 hub with 1 extension to a center point in my drop ceiling? or would that be too much for one port on my rig? my rig only has 4 usb 3.0 and im planning on using 4 sensors. thanks for the reply dude. been waiting for so long to get my touches. finally picked it up today from ups. additional sensors come in a few days. been watching your vids and even repeating them lately. those ceiling mounts and cable clips are pretty sweet. haha. keep the vids comin.

yea man thanks! I should get a link up soon for people to order mounts if theyd like, it takes me about 5 hours to print two of them, still I'm trying! haha As far as the hub i can't tell you if that would work or not since all systems act a bit different. Awhile back, (before updates) I tried to put 3 or 4 on a non powered hub and I kepy having disconnect problems. It's worth a shot!

so i got my 3rd and 4th sensor. hub didnt work. but i sucked it up and just disconnected some things that dont always need to be plugged in. alas i am having some issues. when i have all 4 sensors hooked up and going through setup. everything looks to be fine. connections are good and pass, but right after setting up the sensors and going into the hmd, as soon as I introduce the 2nd touch controller. the virtual hands get all super jittery, and the area setuo in guardian seems to move around in the virtual space. i tried moving sensors, different usb ports. any ideas or suggestions to remedy my issue?

do you have some mirrors in "sight of sensors" - happened to me with 2 sensor setup and mirror which let my sensor see the rift in two positions ;)

Oculus now officially for red-eyed peoples who like invent bicycles. What about complicated setup of Vive we heard before? Do everything: pay more, tangle all room with cables. For not bying Vive.

Well some people think the Rift is better, and will thus be happy to pay a little more. Also having to plug it in the wall in both corners of a room can be a problem for some. Who cares if some people compain about one thing or the other. Both are complety valid options depending on personal preference and need.

you do not need to have 4 sensors and most people will not have 4. Two is sufficient enough for roomscale play and yes it will require one long USB that does not need a power cable.
