Video Description:
Excited after the arrival of my long-awaited HTC Vive, I was anxious to set it up. The intro video on how seemed easy enough, so I figured I'd carve out a couple of hours and get it done. I have a desktop computer I built years ago laying around and figured I'd give that a go and just upgrade whatever components needed upgrading to get it to the minimum requirement for running VR and do this video for anyone interested in what exactly it takes to get your HTC Vive up and running. So here goes.

i know this is 3 years old, i put 2 pvc pipes inserted together and screwed the mounts for the sensors, WORKS PERFECT and no need for holes in the wall. was like 5 bucks total

if you don't have tripods, for the time being, you can also just put them on some boxes and chairs because the tracking still works fine even on waist height and without the 45-degree angel :D

What I learned in setting up my Vive was to ///TAKE DOWN ALL REFLECTIVE ARTWORK// from my tiny office... because lasers. Now my walls are all covered in 3M velcro strips. :( Next house must have a dedicated holodeck.

Michigan Sunde I have a martial arts studio I set up my voice in. if course that means larger mirrors all along the wall. I have a large projector (225+" screen, great for people watching you play VR) that i can use to cover a large portion of the mirrors with, but still had to use extra material to cover more area as my play area is so large. I only had to cover as far as my lighthouses go, so not the entire wall.

ok i have a Vive and what they dont tell you lady's and gentleman is the vive base stations dont work with LED lights in your room or house at all and second the playspace size sucks for the headset you have to have the sensors 16 feet across kiddy corner from each other so if your vr room happens to be 25 feet in length acrossed your kinda screwed.

Not necessarily. As a matter of fact, Vive has a laptop bundle that you can buy from their website if you want to go a little more mobile. However...it's pretty expensive. It really all comes down to whether the specs good enough for the Vive to run.

i dont get why anyone would buy an $800 headset if their running the bare minimum setup...a 970 isnt gonna last much longer as devs implement better stuff into the vr games...he should of got a cpu upgrade and a 1070 with that $800

Give him a break. He's a MAC user (from the results his first VR check was on an MBP, not a PC). MAC users don't generally understand the idea of "powerful graphics card", so he may not have encountered the NVidia name before. Mac users think graphics power increases with the number of shots Starbucks coffee. ;-)

I mean this is still pretty simple for plenty of reasons: 1. Steam is a program owned by pretty much every PC gamer, so installing it won't be trouble. 2. It provides you with all the tools needed and useful instructions for setting up the base stations. 3. All you really have to do in terms of controllers is connect them to your pc 4. The headset requires little more than plugging in some cords 5. All you have to do after that is download and run the setup program and calibrate your room space 6. Play When you compare that to setting up some other things like a steering wheel, it's pretty easy. I mean with a steering wheel you have to: 1. find a reasonable way of holding the steering wheel down without drilling holes in your desk 2. download any software required to use it 3. make sure you have the correct accessories you want to use it with (like a stick shift, pedals, etc) 4. find a way to prevent the accessories from moving around 5. Make sure all the inputs are being recognized by your pc 6. Follow some maybe not so great instructions on changing the controls for your game 7. Change the controls and troubleshoot when it doesn't work 8. Test out the feedback and make sure everything feels smooth, adjusting settings when something's wrong 9. Play

Was a console gamer just moved to pc within the last year so pretty late to the party here but good vid nonetheless. I have $600 left on the full kit for Vive pro 2 left out of $2,200 Au. So yes this was indeed helpful for me. Ran the vr test on steam and its all in the max so good news there.

30mins for me. I just bugged for my controller to be detected for about 2mins. You just have to "associate controller" in steam vr software and click in the same time on the 2 round button on each controller until you hear 2 bip sound and its done.

Hello! I am planning on purchasing an HTC Vive for my son, but I don't have a PC and I was wondering what the cheapest kind that I could buy is. Do I have to buy one of those 1,00 dollar ones to use with the VR headset? I would really appreciate anyone who lets me know! I have been searching for days!

To buy a VR ready pc you would have to spend around 800$ if you buy individual parts and build it, or upwards of $1000 If you are not looking to build one, look for a pc with at least a 1060 6gb graphics card inside of it, a 1050 ti should work too(a regular 1050 would NOT). You could also wait until springtime and get him an oculus quest.(that's when it should be released, it doesn't require a pc and is centered around games. While the oculus go doesn't really have many good games.)

Bob Higgins the headset costed 500 or 800 dollars for me, and then the controllers and base stations costed about 200 and something dollars. It was about 1200 as a conclusion.

They look great on my pc but in the HTC its like playing on 640x480 AND text is almost unreadable... is this the way it supposed to be? It’s annoying how my HDMI port is blocked so I have to unplug my monitors hdmi and then plug in the vives hdmi cord into it it works but it’s pretty annoying how one of my hdmi ports is blocked

thats nont exactly true or cheap. to change your cpu easy enough. and gpu. get ready. it is not easy enough at all. say you need to update your cpu and depending on your set up good chance you will need a new motherboard and a new set of ddr4 memory and then you will want to add an ssd cause well why not if your upgrading upto scrath then maybe you want to add m.2 card. and then you need to upgrade your graphics card. thats another what £500 to £800 so yeah easy enough

i would recommend not mounting your base stations before updating them with the most recent software. You will need to do this with the micro usb provided.

I want a company to make rc cars with a camera, drive and film while i control it from home. Example have a remote controlled rc car drive on the beach while i control it from home in VR. Old people in nursing homes would just love this type of immersion.

I think that anyone with a PC capable of running VR will know what Steam is and have an account, even if you're considering VR you almost certainly have a Steam account.
