This was a really great interview, Ben. You've grown as an interviewer and it's been nice to see that evolution as this medium of VR has also rapidly evolved.
Ree1981 Avoided or just weren't proficient enough to actually be aware of what to ask. Palmer seemed very happy to be able to talk to someone who represents core VR fans. As for FOV... it's obvious it's only slightly better, they don't want to put 112' or 113' FOV number out there...I bet that if FOV was at least 120 or 130, Palmer wouldn't complain how different it can be for every person etc but instead plaster it all over the web "we have 130!" ;))
I love how this guy interviews, sure there's not much personality in him but I'm watching to find out what is going on out there on the leading edge, I don't need another yappy person adding to hype repeating the same old stuff, this dude digs up the dirt!
I tried the Oculus at e3 this year, and I was blown away. I couldn't stop thinking about it afterward. It was just amazing. Based on my experience at e3 I'm building my own PC this year. Have to be ready for q1 2016!
Smurfinz yes indeed! Even though graphics are not very good at the moment, it doenst matter because the high fiel of view and stereo 3D make you feel like youre actually right there! your stomach even gives you the sensation when falling or driving tilted :D its awesome! at the moment you can still see obvious pixels, but this gets improoved in CV1
Wow, sounds good. Then people demoing horror games on RU-vid are like they seeing actual ghosts/monsters in there ? Some of them look really scared, jumped and fell from their chairs lol.
An excellent interview as always when Ben Lang holds the mike. He always brings a lot of really insightful questions to the table, which is the whole point of an interview. Also, I like the tight editing of the segments - many other sites' videos are so filled with "Oh.. Yeah.. Ah.. Cool.. Sweet" reactions to respones, that I reach for the RU-vid play speed setting.. Thanks! Just one question, where do I send donations for a new pair of jeans for Ben? :-P
i haven't gotten a vr system yet... but i have a few request as a consumer... i want to be able to experience flying on a plane virtually because I'm terrified of flying in real life... maybe the virtual experience can help people who have a fear of flying... i would also love to have a virtual vacation experience where you can go any where in the world you want, and experience different countries without leaving your house... if these types of things already exist which system will give me the best experience
Its obvious STAR VR has impressed many with its 210 degree FOV headset. Indeed accomplishing the dream of true Immersion. Though there is a problem in that such a display (at least for now) is rather bulky in size which often translate into weight. still. all the tech is avaiably to make the STAR VR HMD much much smaller. Though Oculus will indeed capitilize on all there detail research and implementations into its retail product, STAR VR will also have its own niche in that it will be the only VR headset with such complete immersion. The beauty of it all is that down the road the best of all such HMDs will eventually find there way into one product.
+Smurfinz And many, many other companies, which are relatively very small, but are pioneers in VR industry. Oculus has started acquiring such companies at a very fast rate. Good times ahead, :)
For people wondering what IPD is: Interpupillary distance (IPD) is the distance between the center of the pupils of the two eyes. IPD is critical for the design of binocular viewing systems, where both eye pupils need to be positioned within the exit pupils of the viewing system.[1] These viewing systems include binocular microscopes, night vision devices or goggles (NVGs), and head-mounted displays (HMDs). source:wikipedia
Does he ever talk about the resolution specs for the cresent bay because I heard that its a problem with Vr that for some reason they cant obtain sufficient resolution on with it yet.
Will i be able to play games i already own on steam? I'm just worried i wont be able to play the important games. (in my opinion) Popular games on steam, like: Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, BioShock, and especially: No Man's Sky and Minecraft. I'm worried i wont be able to "visit" these epic worlds. I wrote this after i saw the full video. (just so you know) This has some serious potential. Virtual reunions, Everyone at home could attend a virtual class, to learn a specific language, or anything, Meetings E.t.c...
leozar69 There are some injectors that can add VR support to these games but in my experience with BioShock, GTAV, Mirror's Edge and Skyrim it's a pain to actually play them this way. Interfaces not visible, unreadable, headache-inducing stutters, cutscenes that take away head control from you etc. - you get the idea. Nice for wandering around but that's about it. Obviously these games have not been developed with VR in mind so the devs are not to blame. Minecraft on the other hand already has a pretty fantastic fan-made VR implementation and I wouldn't be surprised to see official support for it when Vive/Rift are officially released. I heard No Man's Sky developers were working with a Project Morpheus devkit but haven't heard anything about them officially supporting VR ever since.
I really like Palmer, but Jesus: - This might change 'till release - Can't give you exact numbers - We're going into specifics right know - Depends on this, this, that and the form of your face - We're not anouncing this right now - We didn't release this information yet Slowly I am just getting tired of this. So if the current Rift is in fact another prototype and not really the consumer version I don't know why they call it this way? Why did they make this bizarre mini-keynote event "Step Into The Rift" but didn't AGAIN name price and date? Why didn't they do a single stage demo or something?
Rupert Jung I get what you are saying, but the reason they did not say the date, is so they can have a greater deadline. personally, I really like this. I would rather wait a little bit longer, than wait a smaller amount of time, and get shit.
kendokaaa Committing to things they haven't committed to would be silly. They're at the bleeding edge of this technology. Promising things they can't deliver would be insane at this crucial stage.
Lol I know this is old as hell, but what the fuck were you even talking about? O_o Palmer was great and super honest in this interview and almost everything he did was true or came true. 🤷 True "roomscale VR" is mostly dead. People just don't have the space. Most VR is done in a relatively small space (like ≈6'x6') using analog sticks for actual movement.
@@Cooe. "Lol I know this is old as hell" and that was your cue to not leave a response 8 years later, using current knowledge to retroactively criticize others for what was known and being experienced at that particular time. Different times, different perspectives, lots of unknowns. The elephant in the room btw, is that Palmer (great guy now that we all got to know him a bit more, I agree), sold out to Facebook.
@@deuswulf6193 Selling out to Facebook has NOTHING to do with this particular interview or any of his answers dipshit. Pathetic ass straw-man argument is pathetic. 🤣
