Ive been getting a lot of comments about the audio. I am getting Glistco's headphone Koss adapters. GLISTCO is company that specializes in Oculus Rift accessories using 3D printing. Make sure you subscribe so you can get notified when I publish his video!
I think they had to cut manufacture cost somewhere in order to avoid a high price - for the audio downgrade I mean. They want to lower it from 90 hz to 80 hz because they still need to keep the minimum i5 4590 and GTX970/1060 as a standard. Great video man, very informative. Really wanna get a 'S' now. Really like my CV1 though, but the screen clarity upgrade is just too good not to.
Good stuff! As for the sound, including those Koss headphones like the original headset would have probably added over $200 in the Rift S cost, and I'm sure they were trying to keep the cost competitive. My solution is to use the Aftershokz bone conduction headphones (search B07RQLRV7Q on Amazon). They have excellent sound and wrap around making it easy to wear with the Rift S and also allow you to pair with multiple devices (like your PC and smartphone) making them even more versatile. Looking forward to more videos!
Overall, I feel it's an improvement over my CV1. Display is better, and sweet spot is much bigger. If you don't want to mess with external headphones, and improve upon the pitiful built in speakers, open sound settings in sys tray, sound control panel, right click on Rift S headphones, properties, enhancements, check mark headphone virtualization, and loudness equalization, then ok. I restarted just to make sure it was applied. Made a very noticeable difference in volume, and sound quality. Such a simple thing to do. You'd think Oculus would be on top of that.
For years I wanted to do virtual reality but never could get past the setup of the sensors and having cables all over the place taking up all my USB ports but when I saw the rift S I popped on that thing immediately
I'm already using a Deluxe Audio Strap (HTC) on my Rift S. It feels like a new unit. Great audio, great classic comfort (I wasn't a huge fan of the halo - I keep it for guests).
I mainly play Driving Sims, I racing and Assetto Corsa, yesterday I bought the RIFT S and omg, just wow!!!!!! It's so clear, I can actaully now sit back in the car and see everything, and I mean EVERYTHING on the dash, small speedo numbers, delta times, everything is just so crispy clear, on the OG Rift I had to squint, move my head closer etc, close 1 eye, to maybe even slightly read the dash. I can now see so much further into the distance it's mindblowing. I was so mindblown I actually went and loaded up a game I stopped playing as it was so blurry and bad on the OG Rift, and that is American Truck Simulator, and again, WOW. Everything is so clear, the dash in the truck is all so clear, I can now stick to the speed limits without having to squint my eyes and move about in the cab like a weirdo. I'm so happy I bit the bullet and bought the S, I been umming and arring for so long. To me this is a significant upgrade, to a sim racer. The 10hz drop I also didn't notice, everything is just so crispy clear, that it's all so smooth anyway, as for sound I always used my own headset anyway so that doesn't bother me.
Anything i should know about before getting it? Im using it for the same thing because i got a mew wheel and upgraded my pc and i dont want to be disappointed
I have a small amount of light leak but only when looking directly down. But, believe or not I like it! (I can make sure my headphones are oriented correctly looking through the gap)
I just have a pair of $40 Amazon noise cancelling earbuds. I just wrapped them up and they're just dedicated so all I do is plug him in my ears because they're hanging over the sides whenever I put my headset on. I have the earbuds on my original CV-1 and honestly I like the sound quality from the earbuds a lot better than the over-ear headphones even though the over-ear headphone sounded great.
Had absolutely no issues what so ever with my rift S controllers...also upgrading from rift...and since update 1.39 the tracking is flatout perfect...like flawless...better than the original rift with 3 sensors...and ALSO my Rift S didn't smell bad AT ALL...i mean...it smelled and felt AMAZING...and still does. And also pro tip, USE earbuds
@@JSyntax pretty sure oculus will release a couple audio solutions to use with this...hopefuly something like the index use for sound would be amazing i'd pay 90$ for it right away.
I just used the in ear buds that came with my pixel 3. Had no other use for them since I use a BT headset with the phone. They are nearly as good as the old headphones of my CV1. Just wraped the cables around the head strap and left them on there forever. Only downside is that they isolate the outside audio really good. Took me some time to adopt. I was talking a bit louder than I normally do.

If you are still using your headphones on the S, I suggest buying a 3.5 mm male to male headphone cord that is around 6 inches in length. I do this with my psvr and it makes it where I have no headphone cords dragging around my neck/body. (You can only do this if your headphones allow you to replace your current cord, some do not)
This was a very positive review, and that’s great that he enjoyed it, but I was wondering about how common hardware errors are, so I know exactly what to look out for.
Has been fixed in latest release but I still have to restart my pc for it to work before planning. Super annoying. And battery in controller drain fast. Annoying!
To be honest, after hearing multiple people where the Index's external speakers started to fail after months of use I don't really mind having to use a few of earplugs with a headset like this.
@11:00 games were bundled because the rift CV1 first cost $900. You’re getting a full VR access for $399. Besides there are lots of free games that will suck you into entertainment. Such as Rec Room, VRChat, Annie Frank’s house. Oculus investing money goes to Oculus Quest since $399 is a very generous price.
Fair enough. Still hurts that it was featured in the original quest. Comparing the quest of 900 is not the same today since technology has gotten cheaper. I'm still upset they announced link for quest. I would have get that over Rift S. A punishment for early buyers of Rift S. Shame.
Awesome review man. I hope your channel blows up. Just ordered my Rift S today as an upgrade from CV1 after using that in DCS, ED and project cars 2. Looking forward to the clarity bump. Stoked that I got to see you put your Bose headphones on as I was wondering whether my QC 25s would work with it so thanks for that. Subbed.
Hey man, great review! I think Rift S is what the original Rift was meant to be. It's not a total upgrade or step up. And I believe that Facebook is trying to make it more economically viable, instead targeting it on the enthusiast public. I have the original rift and it's a pain in the ass to setup the sensors, too much clutter! I just ordered the Rift S, I became more motivated to do that after the software update that people have been talking about. I am also beginning to develop for it, and the ease of setup of Rift S will make a difference. Peace!
It was a nightmare to get this running without games continuously crashing with a "d3D" error. I love it. If you haven't experienced Asguards wrath, and it interests you get it. Amazing VR experience and game, if you're rich it would be worth $400 just to play that game. I had no problem with the weight, it seemed light to me but I've been using the PSVR helmet. To fix my problem, I first went into control panel/Folder options/view and turn off display icon on thumbnail, crazy eh? Imagine how long it took me to find that tip! I use Afterburner to overclock my GPU slightly. It was 200Mhz overclocked so I turned that down to -1000 or 100, I might edit this later. Anyway them 2 tips fixed a very serious problem I and many others have/had. Asguards Wrath started off straight away(It didn't even get as far as starting the actual game before fix) and after 30 minutes I now think all the hassle was worth it. If you just want to play oculus rift s games/pc games, like me then the Oculus Rift S I'd go for. A lot of people are saying the OLED screen on the Quest is better. Believe me when you read the text in this game, it is the crystal clear, OLED didn't have crystal clear text in the videos I studied. It's a better headset. People think the oculus rift s is overpriced when you can get a quest the same price. I think the quest is overpriced. There you got a decisive final verdict at last! After watching 20 videos...Also the sound. I love it! I was using it on New Years day so the room was quiet, but it fully immersed me, again coming from the fiddly PSVR. Defo 100% better sound then the Go. Oh and Lenova are excellent at what they do, cheap laptops doesn't mean rubbish tech company. They certainly know what they are doing. Why would a set by "oculus" automatically be better? Lenova vs oculus? Lenova everytime.
He says he saw a huge resolution bump but not much difference in the darkness levels. It's exactly the opposite with me! I only saw a small resolution bump, and a large difference in the blackness of dark scenes!
I love the CV-1 headphones. They sounded awesome. But I do understand why they went with the audio-less design. I have purchased two OG Rifts for my household. Between those two I have had five replacement sent to me. The first one was from a bad right screen going bad after like 2 months. I got a replacement 6 months later left audio without, got a replacement 6 months later right audio went out Got a replacement from that one. Still have that one. Bought a second one. six months later right audio went out. Got a replacement, 6 months later right audio went out. Still have that one. They lost a shit ton of money because those fucking headphones. Although I may not like the design choice, with my first-hand experience on the amount of money that they dumped into me giving me replacements, I understand why they did it.
You don't know how easy it is to fix CV1 audio? Where the CV1 head sets plug in, connect the bottom gold contacts left and right with a thin wire. right one works again and is in stereo still!
I have qn ipd of 62! So you are much closer to the sweet spot of 63.5mm than me :) but i dont think its too bad right? I have my rift but couldnt test my rift since my pc blew uo (crappy psu)
One last thing I forgot you said that the S does not come bundled with any software which is true, but your old Rift account is not hardware tied and all your games should have been accessible with the Rift S. Robo-Recall should have been in your account when you signed in. Unless thats not what you were meaning, in that case sorry I miss understood.
What about external batteries .. I have not heard anyone talk about them before Do I need rechargeable batteries and is there a specific type you recommend me? Thank you
For the sound When I get my Rift S I'm just going to use my Bluetooth earbud's with built in sound controller(My PC has Bluetooth built into it.) As for not coming with free game's I do need to say they where not free they where part of the $600 USD Price tag. The Rift S is $399 USD.
The audio really is the only downside, and most of the tech tubers that reviewed this before you had said that headphones won't fit over it because of the Halo but it does fit a lot of models have fit, for example mine is an arctis 7 steelseries headphones with a microphone and it fits flawlessly it almost looks and feels as if it was part of the headset
I did the same thing sold my CV1 and then could not get it back so I went with the S and ended up returning it withing a week. I had issues with the tracking and some issues with it being a lot darker than the CV1 which was very noticeable when playing RecRoom. The CV1 is a better vr experience to me but I might end up trying the S again it might have just been my headset I'm not sure. If I don't end up getting the S again I might get the Vive just to get back into VR.
Knight 11692 tracking was addressed after the latest update... idk if you remember, but the same thing happened early on with the CV1. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Ax2Q6zPevo.html
I want good cable management when I get a headset, but like... I don’t wanna spend 72$ on Ng’s for my roof and spend hours installing them... OK THEN... but oh well... I get everything and all but that doesn’t mean it’s not annoying nonetheless.
to clean-up that strange Rift S Touch (3rd or even more duplicated of your touch controller with weird serial numbers) which cannot be remove: - Close Oculus Home apps. (OculusClient.exe, actually). - go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Oculus - look up for this file: DeviceCache.json - move it to a backup folder or delete it - Run Your Oculus Home apps again. - Go to device, and let it re-detect your HMD and Oculus Touch again That's it! :)
@@mfrochon : for your case, you may stop "Oculus VR Runtime Service" before you move/delete your corrupted DeviceCache.json file. And then running "Oculus VR Runtime Service" after that. How to call Windows 10 service control panel: Press the Win + R keys on your keyboard, to open the Run window. Then, type "services.msc" and hit Enter or press OK Look up "Oculus VR Runtime Service" double click on it. And then press "Stop" button to temporary stop that OVRservice. Waiting until the status changed from "running" to "stopped"
Late reply. I also have a 58mm IPD, and the software IPD adjustment goes down to 58. I don’t see any issue with it just change the position of it on your head and you are good to go.
I have the same issue. I literally have 10 corrupted right touch controllers connected. and several problems with the tracking and playthrough. from what I've seen it might be a hardware issue. Its strange that I haven't seen any statements from oculus about this. I was thinking about returning it and just getting a different headset like a vive but aside from the serious issues with the rift s I still love it and all the features it has like playthrough.
for tracking and play-through problem please try to update it to 1.39 by enable PTC (public testing channel). But if you don't have any problems with your rift S please stay with 1.38 until 1.39 become official :)
I tried WMR but found the tracking to be atrocious, loved my cv1 before it went down. How do you find the tracking on the S? Also, I use BT earbuds when I play on the vive now, it's not perfect but better than having all that extra wire around your head during play.
Jonny RheQue Tracking is sooooo much better now that they released an update for it... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Ax2Q6zPevo.html
Yussef Ibn la ahad If cable is priority, then yeah, I could see how the Quest liberates you. For me, it’s all about clarity. Once the tracking issue was addressed, the S resides at the top imo.
@@BauerMECH clarity? i don't know for the s but i have the normal rift and i think the quest is clearer , also i had prroblems like with vga disconnecting or usb disconnecting etc etc but it's true part of the pain gone with the rift s was placing the sensor.. also with vr i wasn't at ease using fallout 4 vr , magnificient but... i prefer with keyboard mouse and screen for fallout 4, for musical simple games like laser saber of course the quest or rift is perfect i don't need perfect 3d graphics...
The rift s has a resolution of 1280x1440 per eye and the quest has 1440x1600 per eye. I think you adjusted your ipd wrong thats why it appeared blurry.
Nick Gurs OLED pixels are spaced and arranged differently than LCD. Remember, you are magnifying your screen, and although OLED has better black contrast, you’re seeing more of the spaces between the pixels too. That’s where a good chunk of the SDE comes from. For VR, LCD is a better option over OLED... at least until we see a HUGE increase in pixel densities.
He is not wrong. Rift S is sharper. You can't mistake the IPD on a Quest. That's one of first steps you do. It's also super easy to do.When I first got the Quest, I had the impression that it was sharper, with all the hype and just looking at the numbers. Then when I put in on, it reminded me of the HTC: Bright colors, but very noticeable screen door effect. Of course, it's a little sharper than the HTC and more like a HTC vive pro, but still has SDE. This and a number of other reasons caused me to exchange the Quest for a Rift-S.
twitch.tv/ENDER wiggin I was under the impression that no one is making striped OLED screens anymore, so I can only assume implementing such tech would skyrocket the cost of the headset. Pen tile matrices has severe drawbacks when magnified. SDE is one of them, but color shifting is another not many people are talking about. Because the VR lenses distort light at such a great degree, you’ll see the RGB channel’s separate around the perimeters. I bet we’ll see backlight dimming tech being pushed in upcoming VR headsets that have LCDs before we see improvements in OLED. Who really knows though? 👍
Yo there is the mantis headset that is made for the psvr on amazon and it clips on to the side of the rift s like the headphones on the CV1. Happy listening
And as far as the Rift S versus the Quest screen, I have both and yes the quest has a higher resolution screen but the way the Rift S is with it screen it does look more crisp and smooth.

Wireless VR has too many challenges right now. It's very difficult to send that much data that quickly. Oculus is taking the right approach, simplify VR for the masses and offer a standalone headset.
I have an IPD of 72 the CV1 went up to 71 so it was perfectly usable... The Electronic IPD on the rift S is useless and realistically its the Lens Spacing thats the problem, I have both side by side and the lens spacing with the CV1 at 71mm and the fixed lenses on the Rift S is 3 mm less on the Rift s. so to to me and others with a wide IPD its less than usuless, But the graphics are better, just a pitty i Can't use it
@@JSyntax no i can;t use it because the lenses are fixed but the lens spacing it too close together and in the Rift and Rift S the the better you can get to the center of each lens with your eye has the best results.. so because i have a wide PD .. even with the Electronic IPD ajusted to 71mm the lens centers are still too close together, if i close my right eye and move the headset to ther right my left eye is in focus.. then i open my right eye .. its wildly out of focus/ very blurry.......no headaches because i not used it for more than 10 minutes , and the same the opposite way around close my left eye move it to me left ... the right eye is in focus .. then open my left eye its out of focus and blurry ..and so on.... Doing away with the mechancal IPD is a step backwards to me and probably a lot of people world wide, ....oculus just lost probably about 1/3 of the market... if people coming into VR and try a Rift S and its not suitable it will discourage the few to start up with VR especially Oculus,,, Lucky enought i Didn't sell my CV1 .... but the Rift S has now been back in the box for 3 weeks
My ipd is 67.5 to 68. I have to keep readjusting the set so I don't see blur at the outer edge of one eye. If I was > 68 I would be screwed you would only be able to have one eye in the sweet spot. GF is perfect so she loves it.
Completely agree! The audio was the only really dumb choice they made. All other choices to minimize the cost of the headset were smart and good enough, but it was not worth to reach their 399 dollar goal by sacrificing half decent audio. I don't think the audio is ok for anything. That said I still think the Rift S is the best option for me. But I have to accept annoying headphone wires and the hassle. Didn't think I would go back to that PSVR (were I first started) feeling after the CV1...
Not other than the old PSVR solutions that some people use. Not sure if I want to put on uggly white peices of plastic on the headset. My guess is that we will never see any official separate headphones from oculus either. They will probably keep presenting the Rift S as "all you need".
Plan on getting Power beats pro when they get released here in Sweden. Not specifically for VR use but hope they will work good. If not I can just use wired headphones until it's time to switch to another headset :)
@@JSyntax Got my powerbeast pro now and unfortunately it lags to much. I guess bluetooth is off the table. I'm not that picky when it comes to stuff like that and I thought it worked fine at first until I played beatsaber and the beats were way off. Guess I'll keep using wired headphones.
^^This. We are getting an improved, mid range VR system with a better user friendly interface and without the set up hassles. Also, you don't require a beast computer to run it. Sure there's going to be some compromises (audio) but many people already have headphones/earbuds. These "extra steps" about plugging in/putting on an audio device are really not that terrible considering there are even more steps associated in doing laundry or preparing a meal.
@@Transit21 The biggest problem about the audio is that most people are unable to fit their headphones over the headband and earphones wires get in the way. They should definitely provide some sort of accessory that people can buy for an extra $20
Didnt the original rift cost more? Your getting a better VR for small price. Maybe they couldnt keep price down if they added those free games. Just a thought. But free games would be nice.
I have a giant 650 watt surround sound setup and I can tell you, don't use one for VR. The sound when you turn in VR follows you but your speakers don't turn with your head. It will totally screw up your positional awareness. Also for me the accoustics of the room are usually noticeably different than how audio should sound in the virtual environment. Buy a good pair of headphones.
@@TheWarmotor good point....still in game like beat saber it should be better than rift speaker....kind of shame they didnt release the headset with a proper sound configuration...
Thank you for your review! If i hadnt´t decided yet, it would have been pretty helpful :) - My 2 cents: The audio is simply c..p to be honest. I was pretty satisfied with the Rift CV1s audio solution. The extra cables of a headphone really annoys. But actually that is the only downside of the Rift-S for me. The visuals are absolutely crisp and the colors are deep and vibrant. I had major issues before the latest update of Oculus Home and the device firmware, especially with the connection to the display port, but since the update, the Rift-S performs absolutely flawless. Roomscale simply rocks and the free space on my desk and the free USB ports are a bonus on top. Tracking is pretty decent and i had no issues at all, even with using bow and arrow in SkyrimVR, where you have one hand close to the head. The step from the CV1 was absolutely worth it!
I love the visuals of the Rift-S, the software side is still being worked on, I keep getting "USB driver needs updating" even though it's updated. As for the audio, agreed, it's pathetic but I found something I ordered and should be getting tomorrow, one of the reviews says it works with the Rift-S but it's originally meant for the 1st version of the PSVR. Here's the link www.bionikgaming.com/products/mantis
Hi guys, well I got the Mantis headphones today and all I can say is "WOW!!!!!", I'd say they sound a little better than the headphones of the Rift CV1, the Odyssey Plus and the Vive's Deluxe Audio Strap. The only thing I changed was moving the Rift-S plastic cable clip to behind these headphone (running the cable above the Mantis swivel housing for the left ear) and then using a Velcro strap to hold the cable further back (on the rear padding near the halo adjustment wheel)..... these things sound amazing. :)
I couldn’t agree more. Excellent video! I zip-tied a pair of Senheizers to my halo band until oculus presents us with a better solution. So glad they addressed tracking issue right away. I’m sure we’ll be seeing some further work on the audio soon. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Ax2Q6zPevo.html My first experience an actual stand-alone VR headset was in the mid-90’s with the VFX1. With a resolution of somewhere around 240sq per eye, 256 colors at a time, severe tracking/movement latency, and a frame rate that had us calling it the “tunnel-vision migraine machine”, ANY of today’s headsets are like a dream come true in comparison. These early devices were novel, but expensive and limited to a handful of playable games like Descent, Quake, and some flight simulator whose title escapes me. Neat, yes... at least until you either succumbed to the headache or gave up after repeatedly crashing DOS, haha. So, although we may be able to pick these products apart to find their flaws, I’m still thrilled to be able to use ANY of these devices. They are exponentially more capable and affordable than their pre-2015 predecessors... heck, even our lowest-end cell phone VR rigs have more processing power than the PCs we were tethered to way back when... and can give the wearer a great experience. So, I see a fine line between honest assessment and dogging tech based merely on one’s limitless expectations, level of entitlement, or some unyielding brand loyalty.
This is a really good review, I'm selling my tablet and keyboard case i dont use which will sum up to the same price as the Oculus Rift S. Me and my girlfriend are excited to play the VR games such as beat saber etc so would you overall say it's worth it or should I look at another headset. From what I've seen this looks the best for price and quality! Btw, you need more notice so I dropped a sub and post noti ;)
@@JSyntax Okay thank you. Really excited to play when I can as I have a few vr games already that I've played not in vr such as subnautica so I can't wait 😀

The visual quality was absolutely terrible. This is the only headset I've owned so I can't compare but damn was I disappointed in how blurry everything was outside of what was in reach of you. Inside the ships in elite look great but out side was a nightmare of pixelated blobs of what the f*%k ever. I can't even make out the store page for the most part. I filled out a ticket with support but they are swamped and it's going to take 2 -3 days....
@unrepeatable raddish I'd better hope that your $150-$200 earbuds sounds better than a $30 pair of Koss PortaPros. The question is: is the RIft-S worth spending $550-$600 on after you fix Oculus's audio mistake?
Good review, I too think the blacks are ok. Yes OLED has better blacks, but with the CV1 there where so much godrays, that blacks were smeared in most cases. So the lack of Godrays with the Rift S helps make those blacks on par with the CV1 at lest for me. The FOV seemed better then the old Rift for me, but that can come down to your face shape and how the headset fits. My IPD is 68 and I have no problem, but the large sweet spot on the Rift S lenses I thinks helps a lot with over and under IPD range. For the Sound I use this www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1036457-REG/sony_mdrxb50ap_b_deep_bass_in_ear.html And you can use velcro ties to bundle the wires around the halo strap and just leave them plugged in, you will just have the two earbuds hanging down, and just put them in after the headsets on and there should be very little cord to snag on.
Wow, thank you for your feedback and the link. I am looking for something that doesn't require a lot of work or modding to get an always on audio strap. I am also looking for headphones that do not go into my ear canal as I find those uncomfortable. Something like the Valve Index or the Koss Headphones that were on the OG Rift.
I turned down the Gamma just a pip and the blacks are back. I usually play space games, where a decent black is essential for good immersion and the gamma settings really did the trick.
@@Frank_G_Finster Ok so what did you do to adjust the Gamma properly in the Rift S? I see online of different ways of doing it, so was just wondering. Thanks for any info ahead of time.
