Quick answer: if you want portability and don’t mind charging the Quest 2 on/off while also losing visual fidelity but have no wires then the quest 2 is great and the link cable helps with the battery solution and slightly improved visual but that’s about it. The rift S has the advantage of PC dedicated and having the best quality graphics possible.
There both 300$ but you have to spend 380$ to play pc games with the oculus link and sift s has better resolution and quest 2 only has 10 refresh rates more which isn’t even noticeable
It depends on what you use it for, if you run VR games that are not in the Oculus library, the Rift S is the only choice. I use mine for flight SIM and with Film Director software that are both Oculus compliant running on the PC, so end up with way more flexibility. If I only used the Oculus approved apps, then I would probably go with the Quest2.
Rift s: more games etc Oculus: don't need a computer Rift s: if you own a decent pc then get the Rift s Oculus quest 2: if you don't own a pc this is a good choice.
Ok I have the rift s and my friend has the quest 2, I tried out both simultaneously and I can clearly tell the difference in resolution from the rift s, (I’m doing these tests with pcvr on both so link for the quest and just the standard rift s.) In the settings u can actually change the render resolution with a slider, and the refresh rate to 90hz. All though the quest 2 isn’t meant to be pcvr I think the experiences were literally equal. I’m comparing pcvr on both since obviously if u don’t have a good computer than the quest 2 is your only choice. That’s all you need to really know but I’m going to go really in depth about this. Comfort: straight out of the box rift s is way more comfortable, but I owned a vive with deluxe audio strap and u can actually do what’s called the frankenquest mod which is basically attaching the HTC vive deluxe audio strap to the quest with some adapters. This solves two things with the quest 2 which is audio and of course comfort. You can also do this to the rift s, but no matter what it’s going to be 100 dollars more. Controllers: Definitely personal preference but I actually like the quest 2 controllers more than the rift s, the battery compartment door doesn’t slide off anymore, and battery life is better. Quest also has finger tracking if you don’t use controllers which is currently in beta. Both feel good, but quest feels better. Also the haptic feedback on the quest 2 feels more bumped up so you get more rumble in intense games. The performance feels better on pcvr since it uses the same game but with higher resolution and refresh rate. I also happen to own a first gen quest and the link experience was a 7/10 now with quest 2 a 8.5/10. Rift s still has less latency but of course its a pcvr headset. So in conclusion for the second time, IF you have a good pc get the quest 2 because you can adjust refresh rate to 90hz and upscale the resolution to higher numbers. If you have an ok pc this means around the recommended specs for the rift s, then get the rift s since your pc might not be able to handle those high resolutions of the quest 2. If you have no pc then obviously get the quest 2. For me overall I think quest 2 can still win in the ok pc category since you can also turn down the resolution to default or closer to the rift s, while still maintaining 90hz and being 100 dollars cheaper. That’s all and thank you if you read through all of this, reply if u have a question and stay safe, good bye!
Thank you for such a great and thorough review. It seems like the Quest 2 has modifications you can always make to make it slightly edge out the rift s. I think you made it clear that it’s the best option. It sounds like the quest 2 can still be made to do everything the rift s can do just by keeping it plugged in for battery, and gives you better graphics (or equal) if you have a great PC
@@andyandrews55 Yes but quest 2 with link is taking the raw gameplay footage and adding an additional layer of processing that converts it to video to be transferred over usb-c which introduces video compression artifacts and image softening on the headset or "Quest 2 Sub Pixel Enhancements". Note: this is from reading peoples reviews and comments all over the web about Quest 2/ Oculus Link
@@liamodonnell3450 if your telling me that the rift s looks better and performs better then your wrong. Sorry i have both and with the quest 2 running at 90hz and the render resolution at 1.7 it looks so much better. Sorry but its true
I just purchased the Rift S last week over the quest 2 only because I am mostly playing on my PC. I have to say that the experience has been amazing. It is unfortunate that they are going to discontinue it next year since they want to focus more on quest 2. But if they are willing to optimize the quest 2 for the PC with the link cable, I am all for it. I won't be upgrading anytime soon until the quest 3 maybe.
I bought the Quest ² as a replacement for my Rift CV1. My intention was to use it almost exclusively with a link cable and my PC, but more and more I've been using at as a standalone as well. My biggest surprise was how comfortable the Quest² felt. I read so many stories/comments about how uncomfortable it was. I figured I'd end up having to buy a more comfortable strap, but I've been just fine with the stock strap.
So I've been looking at both, I have a PC with a GTX 1060, R3200g and 16gb ram but I like the idea of using it wirelessly aswell, do you suggest the quest 2 and if so can I use any decent USB 3 cable?
id reccommend you get a quest 2 a pc with those specs wont be able to run big titles smoothly like boneworks half life alyx or asgards wrath so you can use both standalone and pcvr when you need to
@@chip6044 bit late but I've played boneworks and half life alyx just fine on my 1060 and rift S, Asgard's Wrath didn't really run all that well though
@@zwenkwiel816 yeah i can see that now since not all games run the same in vr most games on the 1060 run just fine it all depends on the software that your using
The quest 2 has higher resolution and refresh rate. It can also be connected to a PC wirelessly by using Virtual Desktop. You can also play PCVR games by using cloud computing with a virtual gaming PC with Shadow PC. Literally the only thing that the Rift s has over the Quest 2 is a slightly larger field of view. There is almost no reason to go with the Rift s over the Quest 2. There is no way I would attach myself to a PC with wires if I don't have to.
@@graystoncain7357 Quest 2 can also get 120hz. The no charging argument makes no sense because you can still plug the thing in if for some reason you like being tethered.
i feel like your wrong to complain about AAs you can get rechargeable ones, and what happens 3 years down the line? the batteries have degraded beyond the point of usability, with HTC you have to go spend $200 on some more controllers, with the rif s and quest 2, $20 on some more rechargables
I have both but personally I would go for the rift s. The quest is very smooth looking when playing games but it’s just a pain having to charge it so often
@@HypeCrazed Yes it can. You can use any USB 3.0 Cable to connect the Quest 2 to your pc and use it to play pc VR. The graphics do increase dramatically when you do connect it to your pc and use it to play pc VR.
So I don’t know if his review is current I didn’t pay crazy attention... sorry. But I think it’s worth mentioning the quest 2 is a higher resolution then the rift S. The quest 2 will also be receiving a update for 90hz which means it will be 10hz smoother then the rift s. I just want to throw this info out for anyone that does care about these specs. The resolution can really only 100% be taken advantage by less demanding titles when standalone but all titles with a strong enough pc.
Returned my Rift S and bought the Quest 1. Never bought the Quest 2, because I like OLED blacks of Quest 1. Also bought 2 more second hand Quest 1 headsets for spares, including 5 extra Q1 controllers. Works great. Dont need the Quest 2. Might buy the Pico 4 or wait for 2023/2024 VR headsets. Oh, VR gaming without a cable is much better.
@@gu3z185 the 90 hz dont make sense on it or even the beta for 120 hz because its wireless even with oculus link you just cant get the performance you get on the rift s because even though the rift s has 80hz it feels much more fluent its like getting a 4k monitor and your pc is a potato looks good runs like shit see what im saying? the quest 2 is superior in the names of no cables but how do you want to get 90fps in every situation you get into even with the connection of oculus link its just not great the rift s has 80hz and thats something you can achieve nearly everywhere and these few pixels more dont bother so much because there is nor glaring or god rays so you just see clearly on both though but i would go for the rift s if you asking me if you want the performance and the greater software if you want to go wireless then the quest 2 because they are nearly equal in every point btw sorry for my english its not my main language

The visuals on rift S will be better. Though they are improving the quest 2 with updates. But youd need that oculus link cable to teather to get similar performance. When teather battery still drains though. So be prepared if you go quest 2
I have rift s and have tried quest and if I’m being honest I’d get quest. If you don’t mind spending a few extra on the link cable and the premium head strap it just seems like a better option in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong I love my rift s too but they just push more updates to quest 2.
Can anyone tell me which one is better for VR Chat? I just got a custom model for VR Chat but I've heard you can only use it if you have VR set up with your PC?
If your on pc then get the oculus rift s like I am, I love vrchat which is the main reason i love the rift. And the rift s gives better FPS when playing vrchat so yeah
hey im looking for a vr that can have custom maps and mods on games. such as beat saber. But I dont wanna get a rift s if it isnt as good as the quest 2. can anyone help?
The rift s technically is as good as the quest 2. From what I’ve heard it sounds like the rift s has slightly better performance and visuals. However the quest 2 has the advantage of being completely independent. If that’s not important to you I would go rift s which is what I bought. In the future there won’t even be an argument once the rift line has been discontinued, and the quest line will surpass the performance and visuals of the rift and hold the advantage of being independent.
Been having a hard time getting much issue on both. I am looking to get a headset for my son for christmas (11). I had no doubt in my mind to get him the Quest 2 but I have seen a few used Rifts out there for 200 or less. He does have a Ryzen 1600 RX 580 PC. Which do you think would be best? think I am still siding with the Quest 2.
For someone that has a beefy pc. Should I get the quest 2 64gb with the link with better refresh rate and lenses. Or the rift s with worse refresh rate and worse lenses. Also heard the link isn’t as good as a rift pc version Then if I get the headstrap, link, and headphones that’s over 500$. With the rift s with only headphones for around the same price

At 5:12 You said that the Oculus Quest 2 is "Objectively an inferior experience with lower resolution." This statement is objectively false. The Oculus Quest 2 has better resolution AND higher refresh rate than the Rift s. I can't speak about the hiccup issue you seemed to be having, but considering that it seems like you had a lower resolution on a headset with objectively higher resolution I doubt that the problems are caused by the headset in general. Might be that you have a dysfunctional headset. Or you did something wrong during the setup.
Although the tech is great, it definitely should be mentioned that facebook now has taken complete control of over their oculus customers. Facebook recently announced that if you delete or disable your facebook account you will lose all of your oculus purchases. Also your facebook account must remain "in good standing" to have access to your oculus account.

Hey, quick question! Im gonna get a oculus rift S, and i wanted to ask if you have to plug in the headphone that your using in the vr headset or can you just let it plugged in, in the pc?
@@blædeBlade oculus settings will allow you to choose a sound passthrough where you can play both audio on your headset and your pc like if you want to use pc speakers as well for some games such as Beat saber. Yes with an oculus quest2 but you need steam so that requires a pc you shoul (in my opinion) get the rift s cause I don’t think you need a Facebook account to use a rift a but idk that
Sadly the rift has been discontinued and we will not see a “Rift X”. So I will most likely go with the quest 2. 1. It’s wireless and I can take it anywhere 2. I can still stream steamVR games to it and play them 3. I don’t have a 3
I have a question, the Rift S will be discontinued this spring and I want to get a VR headset for the PC and I’m debating between these two but how does the quest 2 perform against the rift s on PC and how easy is it? Which one would you recommend for PC.
I use the Rift S as I am into absolute Performance. But I always thought the Quest 2 was like a "mobile downgrade" Version of VR. You've proven me wrong and the Quest looks very interesting to me too. Thank you!
How can i set up my rift s so i can see clearly? I tried eye mm on the pc and the headband but i see like i am drunk. My pc has a nvidia geforce gtx 1070 and intel i7-8gen so itz not a problem but i cant see clear on the rift s always
I love removable batteries. I use a AA battery charger that takes 20 minutes to charge up 4 AA's. It means that when one set goes flat, I can swap them out in 60 seconds rather than having to stop playing to charge them up. With regards to the Quest 2, as a RiftS owner I would only move to a Quest2 if there was no compromise on the graphics performance and tracking. I understand the Quest controllers to be using fewer sensors to increase it's battery life and I would want to know if this makes the tracking worse than the RiftS controllers. From a graphics perspective I know the Quest 2 technically has a higher resolution and screen refresh rate but it seems like there is a graphics quality vs refresh rate trade-off with with the Hz modes. Being directly connected to the PC on the RiftS I have to make no compromise on graphics quality. If there is same graphics performance/quality is available tethered with a link cable then the Quest 2 seems like it would be the better option.
The PC games will look better on the Quest 2 now. Thanks to the new update you can manually set the bitrate on the Link, and it will run on higher resolution and on 90Hz instead of the Rift S which runs on 80Hz. You will see no video compression at all, and it's just generally more crisp looking. And with Virtual Desktop it's very much possible to play all your PCVR games completely wireless. Also, the built in mic on the Quest 2 is much better than on the Rift S, worth to mention if you are going to play a lot of multiplayer games. In conclusion, the Quest 2 is now the better PCVR headset. Help spread this information so that no poor soul buys a Rift S because they want to play PCVR.
@verdenxy you can bypass the cable and use wifi if you have fast internet 75mbs-150mbs+ and using virtual desktop you can access and play all your vrpc games wirelessly with at 90hz with pc quality.

I sold my CV1 for a Rift S, and I have mixed feelings about it. It didn't feel like an upgrade honestly. But the Quest 2 however is a great upgrade from the CV1. There is a reason the Rift S is being discontinued next year. Get a Quest 2 if anything, the CV1 is still a great headset with some advantages over both Rift S and Quest 2, such as audio solution, better tracking and much deeper black levels. I'm still really impressed by the Quest 2 though, and would definitely recommend it.

Brayden Jessie I would say the Rift S if you care about your privacy. You need a Facebook account that has factual information of yourself because if you use a faked account you run the risk of being banned from using the quest 2 entirely.
Brayden Jessie even those with a Facebook account that is legit have also been banned from what I have heard. Again the choice is up to you. I personally wouldn’t like to run the risk of being banned from using the headset out of no where even if the chances are small.

Do not not fall into the trap and buy the Quest 2! I have returned mine after two weeks of use, because even with the latest update for the 'Link Cable' it still looks drab compared to the Rift/Rift S when in game.. I have a beast of a Gaming PC with a Gigabit broadband so i decided to set the Quest 2 up Wireless using Virtual Desktop/Server & Sidequest.. Looks better but it's a pain in the ass because sometimes the headset needs to be connected to Sidequest each time via a cable. Also certain games just do not like to be ran through Virtual desktop. Making things worse your now using the Quest Store and Rift Store AND Virtual Desktop just do the simple things like play games!! The battery life on the Quest 2 drains down to 90% within minutes also. This headset is no good in anyway what so ever for PC VR.. People keep making videos on RU-vid for views showing Half Life running on the quest 2 wireless, yet there is a lot of other stuff that won't work! Get a Rift S or a Valve Index as the Reverb G2 has dodgy tracking because of Mixed Reality controllers.. Quest 2 is a mobile VR device and that's as far as it goes lol
