Great video, Mickey. You can't please all the people all the time, of course, but trikes are perfect for a heckuva lot of folks. I rode a two wheeled recumbent until I noticed the tire tread was threadbare on only one side, so my balance was way off. The trike has solved that problem, of course, and if trikes had been around 50 years ago, I would have saved up for one. It is so much fun to ride. Like a Go-Kart of long ago times! Thanks for pointing out how easy it really is to narrow down the field of trikes until you find one that's perfect for your body and budget.🙂

When people ask me what's the hardest aspect of riding a recumbent trike, I jokingly respond "not falling asleep because they are so darn comfortable", which always bring a smile to their faces. I began riding trikes at age 57 as an automobile replacement vehicle (ARV) because I sold my final car. I needed something that could transport me, using my own human power only, long distances cross country, and the recumbent trike fit the bill very well. I still love recumbent trikes, and at age 74, am currently riding a 2021 HP Scorpion fs26, an outstanding vehicle. This is my fourth recumbent trike (expensive, but lots of fun). I have also had during this time an Easy Racers Gold Rush long wheel base recumbent bicycle, which was as comfortable, or more so, than my recumbent trikes. In your video, the discussion did not include recumbent bicycles unfortunately because viewers are left with the impression that all bicycles are uncomfortable and result in wrist, butt, and neck issues ... recumbent bikes offer the comfort benefits of recumbent trikes, as any recumbent biker knows well. The only possible disadvantage of a recumbent bike compared to a recumbent trike would be for riders who do experience problems with remaining well balanced. Associating age with physical fitness, as most of our society commonly does because it is so typical that older people are unfit, is somewhat off-putting for "older"riders who remain fully physically fit and capable of riding anything. Age is not a disease or condition that limits a person who is dedicated to keeping their bodies strong and fit, yet it is typically believed that at certain ages, all human bodies decline and experience pains, aches, and disabilities as discussed in this video. While it may be true for most people, it is certainly not inevitable, so in fairness, this distinction would be beneficial to make. The title of this video is "Why you should ditch your bike for a trike ... before it's too late", which is well supported by the discussion here when applied to the vast majority of people who ride typical diamond framed bicycles. Well, interestingly, at 74, I am now about to "ditch" my trike for a bike (before it's too late, haha), but definitely NOT a diamond frame standard uncomfortable bike that leads to known negative medical and physical issues. I am getting my second long wheel base (LWB) recumbent bicycle simply because I truly enjoy riding bicycles a lot, but am not interested in a common bike with a tiny seat pushing into my hind quarters! A discussion acknowledging recumbent bikes and the ultimate comfort would be well received by riders who do not have balance issues because this type of bike does not aggravate traditional biker problems as mentioned in this talk. This is a great discussion Mickey for the majority of typical riders, however there are those who do not fall into that profile, and who were left out of this talk. I have no physical issues at all, and while I could still ride a traditional bicycle with no problem, I have no desire at all to do so because they are, as you say, not comfortable (but not just for "older" people, but everyone ... even the younger riders admit to the wrist, butt, neck and other problems that bicycle riders all experience). steve

I'm 74 years old also and wish I had a Trike 50 years ago. My Catrike Dumont Trike is so comfortable that I might fall asleep riding it, but my main reason is I always seemed to be looking at the ground and trying to look up killed me. Now I don't have that problem or the rest of it, wrist pains, shoulder pain, lower back problems or what really gets me, how stupid men are to still ride them straight bar bikes, if wasn't for the colors of a ladies bike I would have rode it and once Trek came out with their style of the dropped bar. I lost count how many time I slipped of the pedals and my family jewels hit that top bar. OUCH!!!! Why do men have to be stupid and love crushing their family jewels??? As I said, I wish they had these Trikes 50 to 60 years ago. Catrike Dumont Trike to me is awesome.

@@siriosstar4789Recumbents are a heck of a lot more comfortable, whether two or three wheels, taking all the aches and pains out of cycling once and for all. My dad reached the "oh hell no" stage, where he hit the wall, at age 57, when he died ... a good lesson for me to contemplate how I could improve upon his life choices (I was 26 then, and thought he was an old man at that time, haha). steve

I'd love to get a trike. What's stopping me? I generally ride around my city streets. I live in a typical North American city where the bike infrastructure is very poor, if present at all, meaning I'd need to ride it on the road. I do not trust the drivers not to run it, or me ,over. At least on my upright bike, I feel I'm more visible, and it has more potential agility to get out of the way.

You have to do you and I understand where you are coming from. On average, and I have had a couple close calls on the trike, the trike is so unusual the drivers around me usually give me a big margin. I had a couple close calls on a bike as well. I am also not above retreating to the sidewalk sometimes but with a flag and blinky lights and a rear view mirror I feel like I am at least as safe on a trike as I was on a bike. Regardless, ride and enjoy life!

I have a road bike, gravel bike and a CaTrike Expedition. Sometimes I like the slower and more peaceful pace. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and I can ride on residential side streets to get to paved trails. I always use a 750 lumen flashing white light in front, and two 450 lumen red flashing lights on back with a flag. But you can always get a rack for a hitch and take your trike to the trails.

A year ago I switched over to a trike. And ya, I get it when you have to look up the see the door handles on cars it’s a little unnerving. Here’s what I’ve learned. First use the flag, and get the brightest lights you can. It helps make you stand out. Riding down the highways out in the country, drivers give me way more road than they ever did when I road a bicycle. Drivers in town are also more likely to giving me more road, provided they see me. If there’s a row of cars the first driver can see me, the other drivers, properly not, then again, the second third driver back probably didn’t see me on a bike either. As long as you’re ride defensively and assume the drivers are blind, you’ll be OK. But I find drivers are more likely to share the road with me on my trike far more if the time than they ever did when I was on a bicycle. The reason I switched to a trike was physical pain, numb hands, feet, sore back and shoulder. That all went away when I started running a trike. I have a Catrike Dumont with full suspension. It’s like riding in a car while you bike. The reason I get sore now, is because road to far. But hurts are gone. If you’re thinking about getting a trike, go for it, the benefits out way the cons.

A recumbent bicycle (not mentioned in this video) is an excellent alternative to a standard bicycle, which is just as comfortable as a recumbent tricycle (if not more so), but having the better visibility advantages of a typical bicycle (from a motorist's viewpoint). So if you're worried about being seen from a safety standpoint, you may wish to consider a recumbent bicycle instead of a recumbent tricycle. I used to ride a recumbent bicycle, and now have my second one on order ... very fun to ride, with a much higher visibility factor compared to a low sitting recumbent trike. steve

Are you all tracking the upcoming California e-bike subsidies? I wonder how it will affect the trike industry.
@LaidBackCycles

If you're referencing the California E-Bike Incentive Project, my guess is that it won't 'feel' like a large impact on the bike or trike industry. The project budget allows for about 0.01% of CA residents to benefit. The project doesn't take into account the cost of trikes vs. bikes either. We'll definitely keep our eyes out for developments.

One thing I know is that I originally bought a recumbent trike for cross country trips using my human power. I wanted something that was super comfortable for long days over the course of three weeks or so. With the two wheels in front, it allows me to also sleep on the trike when in a situation where camping would not be a good idea (I tent camp at night, but there are instances where setting up a tent would get me kicked out of an area). So from this standpoint of long-haul comfort, a "dumb" second wheel in front is a preferred thing to have. All cycles have things they do well, and no one type does everything well for every situation for every rider. Additionally, if a rider is not physically capable of balancing and safely riding a regular bicycle, then these trikes make it possible to continue cycling. There is usually a reason why a company manufactures given products ... if a cycle with two wheels in front would universally be a bad, or dumb, idea, then companies would not waste their time and money developing and marketing it in the first place. This comes down to educating ourselves on the "why" of three wheels, and then we understand it's a great idea in many situations, even though it may not work for you. steve
