its so strange that this went from an channel managed by one guy who developed the youtube animation community to a person with a whole netflix show and 19 million subscribers im so happy to have seen this channel grow
It's mind-blowing how a he literally went from a RU-vid story animator to making his own Netflix show. It's amazing to see how much he's grown, truly inspiring.
I absolutely **love** this show. Especially the subtle jokes that are thrown around. Also why does James's Butt get more screen time then James himself.
@@drewconsylman8724 Adults and parents, in my opinion. It's too dark and messed up to be for kids. or at least it's dark and messed up in the wrong ways.
Was not expecting to unlock Max's tragic backstory and deal with the traumas of parenthood, and have a dead scuba diver all in the first episode. This was really good, and I can't wait for the next episode!
@@mrmastergrimmbo Shut the fuck up. Stop advertising for Netflix. Netflix is a HORRIBLE company bent on taking over the world and forcing everyone to pay them money.
This is awesome in all the ways. A lesson on working together, how to put together a good parenting style and the effects of different situations on children. And humor. Beautiful first episode.
This was a surprisingly nuance way to handle the "Characters look after a baby" plot. I love that Toasty is not a monster since the beginning, James and Max made him one, and that makes the character a lot more interesting and easy to get invested in! Great writing! Also charming drawing style and animation! I'm already binge-watching the show on Netflix!
At first I thought it was silly but it got so intense and so good that I’m not disappointed. More kids tv should be like this. Congrats, you should be proud!
The alligator's reaction to the burnt toast is PERFECT 2:00 PS I also like how it takes place in Arizona Since that's where he grew up Amazing job Odd1sout! Keep up the good work
I love the dark humour in this show. For example the idea that max had a emotionally detached childhood growing up in a lab. And that scene where toasty kills a diver along with all the fish.
I'm definitely not the primary audience for this, but seeing someone independently advocate for their idea and bring it to life is awe inspiring. It reminds me of those early 2010's dumb & dumber duo nickelodeon cartoons like sanjay & craig
I love how at random points things get more detailed and it happens so naturally. Also, I cant get over all the multiple framed where James has a dumpy.
James has really gone a long way. He went from just being your normal run-in-the-mill animator on RU-vid explaining life problems... To managing to create an entire Netflix show. James seems like he's got a good career going. Here's hoping he can a successful show. Good luck, James!
That was actually Wow Cute, funny, terrifying, some dark gator lore, and a really profound message on parenting styles and the effects it has on children as well as friendship and working together?? Great job James!
This was so good! But man I did NOT expect those dark moments. Max replicating his “parents” awful behavior, toasty looking around at all the dead fish in the lake, traumatized, James taking out toasty’s circuit chip and crying… good lord
This show is surprisingly dark, a man died, one lost his leg, the whole backstory for Max (and him actually being injured/bleeding), and I'm sure there's more examples in other episodes.
He went from being a popular RU-vidr, to publishing books, launching his own mobile game, and now he has his own Netflix show. I'm proud of James to see how far he has come in his life! He's such an inspiration!
this was perfectly balanced amount of concerning, funny, wired and real stuff contained in a 16 minute episode. I've never seen anything like this before like what lmao
and even before the advent of the internet and being able to upload your stuff, small indie creators would get opportunities to pitch their own shows if their short films or comics had promise to become a television show. (ie: mike judge, joe murray, matt groening, stephen hillenburg
i love how this shows how dangerous each parenting style can be, and that to be a successful parent you need to incorporate both of these styles in a family
This is a really solid episode. I like that the conflict of Max treating Toasty as an experiment rather than an actual child of his own as that how he was treated. And it’s not just him being dumb for the hell of it
While this personally isnt for me, I'm very proud of James. Ive been a fan of his content for years now and how far hes come is incredible and takes a lot of patience and persistence. Maybe I'll watch the series just to keep supporting the guy and perhaps my mind will change.
@Aquarius Rattus if you think that then that’s fine, genuinely! You’re allowed to think differently, we’re all allowed to like or dislike things for different reasons. Art is subjective, it heavily depends on our standards and preferences, if it didn’t meet your expectations then that’s alright; no harsh feelings, it just means this cartoon isn’t for you. At the end of the day, opinions are not facts, opinions are what we personally think about something or someone and I find it such a shame it disappointed you, but I also have to remember that we all have different tastes and the opinion of someone doesn’t have the power to change my perspective on the matter since it ultimately doesn’t matter and you’re allowed to have a different viewpoint. I can say I find this cartoon decent. I think it’s tolerable, just nothing amazing, I think it’s average. If you think differently then that’s great! I think we need some variety on opinions, but that doesn’t give you a justifiable reason to shame others for having a different viewpoint from you. Keep thinking differently, but please be aware of the words that come out of your mouth.
@@NonbinaryFelineArtist No, there’s definitely some merit to criticism. I’m not here to shit on your enjoyment of something, but it’s still worth pointing out that the show is really below average. The animation is only good when compared to James’ standard on RU-vid, but by TV standards it’s really quite bad, and the writing has to be some of the most mediocre I’ve ever seen. It’s definitely not impossible or wrong to still find enjoyment in it, and I’m glad you do, but looking at this show on a critical level, it’s really basic and flat with almost no character despite trying so hard to be wacky and surreal. I believe you can still enjoy something but be able to acknowledge “Yeah. I like it, but it’s really not that good” And hey. If you want something similar but FAR better, I’d highly recommend Smiling Friends. It’s definitely more adult (which btw doesn’t make it inherently better or worse) and I think it does a lot of what Oddballs tried to do a lot better so if you enjoyed this, you’ll probably REALLY enjoy Smiling Friends
@@wilsonsauls2899 thank you so much for the reply, I really do agree with you! I do think there is definitely a way to point out objective flaws in something while still providing your own opinion. Now thinking about it, I can see where you’re coming from, I do think the show is very run-of-the-mill. You’ve actually made me feel better with your criticism, I appreciate your critique a ton, I am very thankful! I’m lookin’ to give Smiling Friends a try sometime in the future (when I get old enough to watch it since it’s an adult cartoon and I’m below the age of 18). I really hope you do well in your personal life because you’ve lighten up my day and I am being serious about it, I really do appreciate you sharing your perspective on the matter! I wish you for the best possible, may God bless you and your loved ones and hey! Stay safe out there!
@@wilsonsauls2899 jeez it's just a youtuber bruh, it's hard enough doing youtube, but making a TV show is harder James shouldn't really shouldn't care about the show anyways, but the animation looks great, so alteast effort was put in this show.
This episode hit me straight in the heart for sure, especially Max's backstory. Something about him treating toastie the way he was treated when he was "born" just hurts, then toastie becoming "the bad guy" makes this realistic. This was definitely one of my favorite episodes for sure!
