I’ve been a horror fan for decades, and I’m hard-pressed to name a scene more terrifying than that one. Oddly, the two scariest scenes of the last ten years might both be tent scenes (Oddity and Backcountry).

Had a lot of fun seeing it in a theater. Best way I can describe the movie is it’s pretty much if Mike Flanagan directed a Conjuring movie on a much more limited budget.

Oh! 👀
@Kristine_202
@Kristine_202 Месяц назад
That's such a good explanation. I was getting "The Haunting of Hill House" meets "The Conjuring," so I totally agree. And it was low budget, but the scares were still scary. At no point did I think, "That looked fake." They used their budget wisely. In reality, you don't need to have crazy special effects to make an effective ghost film.

YES! It has a very Mike Flanagan aesthetic and tone. A great blend of psychological and supernatural horror.

'Oddity' has just been acquired by a distributor here in Ireland and will be released in theatres on 30th August. Wouldn't be surprised if it also gets a second distribution in the US later this year, probably in the fall.

It's interesting that an Irish film got US distribution before its home country.
@ohlord7043
@ohlord7043 Месяц назад
@aaronmichael1201 It hasn't received much publicity at all over here yet (I only found out about it through American reviews). Presumably because Ireland is a small country and the resources needed to market a movie on a large scale just aren't available. Fortunately it's drawn plenty of interest from abroad and will get the attention it deserves, which is surely a credit to the quality of the film itself.

I saw it and I have to say that you NAILED this review. There are definitely parts where people laughed, but it wasn't a comedy. It's kind of difficult to explain until you see it. I think it's because the writing is just very clever. And, same, the ending shot literally made me smile. I'll also back up your guarantee. If at least one of those jump scares doesn't get you, something is wrong. LOL The funniest part is that I KNEW it was coming. It was so obvious what was going to happen, and I still jumped. I think Mike Flanagan would sing this one's praises. (If he hasn't already.)

Genuinely scary movie. I have been frustrated this year with only a few really scary horrors, but this one is outstanding and I agree with you about going in cold. It just has moments where there is just a sense of dread. It is not easy to create that. This is likely to be overshadowed by over-hyped trope-milkshake that is Longlegs, when this movie is ACTUALLY unsettling and well made. The Irish seem to be very good at horror movies!
@stevenrice8439
@stevenrice8439 Месяц назад
I made a day of it recently and saw this along with Longlegs at the theater. Time well spent. The minimal number of locations along with small cast really made this story feel focused and helped build the sense of dread throughout. It felt like a step up from Caveat which was still a good movie. My only criticism is I wanted to see the outcome played out differently. The final shot was foreshadowed but that is a minor quibble.

Nice review. I enjoyed this film, but didn’t find a single aspect of it scary. Matter of fact, I found a lot of things “telegraphed” to a point where I knew how some things would play out. It kept me engaged for sure. I may be desensitized to “scary” stuff now…but I am enjoying the fact that horror films are focusing more on storylines, as opposed to jump scares and needless gore. Long Legs, Oddity, Late Night with the Devil….really solid films.

Thank you for the quick review of 'The Oddity.' Supernatural horror is perhaps my favorite type of spooky. There are, I think, different kinds of fear. There is the feeling you get when the heroine knows a knife wielding psycho is loose, hears a sound in the middle of the night, and goes to investigate armed with a knife. The other kind of fear, and I'll us the movie, 'The Pact' as an example. The first sister hears a sound in the middle of the night and goes to investigate. The sound comes from behind a closed door. She opens it and sees blackness. She slowly walks into that blackness and disappears - end scene. In the first example, I know the menace. In the second, I have no idea what form the menace will take - if there is any inside that blackness. As a result, my unfortunately vivid imagination is allowed to go loose. I enjoy your reviews even when I disagree with them. Keep them coming.

I watched Caveat in 2021 and it was the scariest movie I saw that year, and honestly I think it's still the most scared I've been watching a movie since then. It was scarier than Oddity!! Oh, I dont believe in paranormal either ,but I had a experience and it seriously was traumatic and very trippy. I am a skeptic still ,but my mind is open and I am very confounded still. Not gonna pick up any litter off of a grave and have a ketamine type experience anymore. LOL Cant wait to see the movie.

I'm hearing huge things about The Coffee Table. Are you going to watch and do a review or is this in the No-No Disturbing category? Thanks. You are my go to for Horror suggestions.

Just watched that on Shudder! I loved how realistic the character designs, costumes, and filming locations seemed. Felt so historically accurate and immersive.

Very few theaters by me we’re screening this movie which is unfortunate. This movie was amazing more theaters should’ve picked it up and should’ve had more movie times most places that were showing it were showing it after 9 PM only

I went to see longlegs, was disappointed. Stuck around and bought a ticket for oddity. It was way better. Would be great to watch alone at home in the dark. Nice small film but so scary. Some good eerie moments a la the haunting of hill house

Like you, I had to go to a different AMC location from the usual one I go to in my city, but I was able to watch it. I did have a good time watching it, and Carolyn Bracken's performance was really good in this movie. I didn't really like how her character's twin died though. Seemed kinda forced to me. Otherwise it was a solid movie.

I thought this film was excellent. Very well done. I enjoyed it quite a lot. I did see it in a traditional movie theater, but it wasn't here long! I knew nothing about this film, but it really surprised me. Super cool flick. Right up my alley. I agree with the jump scares. Honestly, I am veteran of horror films, and I thought my heart was going to stop on a couple of those jump scares.

Sadly in my eyes the movie was VERY overhyped, which made me believe it's gonna compete with Longlegs and in the end i was insanely disappointed. Then the waiting part.. everytime i was waiting on what's gonna happen next and something did happen (apart from the tent scene) it just felt flat to me personally, all the buildup going on and in the end there's just...nothing.

Yesss so true, just watched it and it wasn’t scary really.. wouldn’t call it the scariest movie of the year.
