True story: The Odds came to play my American college (Cornell University) winter of '97 as opening act for The Barenaked Ladies. I was probably the only fan of The Odds in the entire theater, everyone else was there for BNL. I interviewed the Odds backstage and then they said "Is it true that Ken Dryden played hockey for Cornell when he was in college?" I told them yes, and a minute later, they demanded I take them to the ice rink. By pure coincidence, it was 'open skate night,' so before I knew it, my girlfriend and I were suddenly ice skating with those hockey nuts The Odds. They were such cool dudes and it was truly one of the most random and awesome evenings ever.
if i could love this i would!! BUFFALO born and raised momma!! SOMEONE WHO IS COOL SOMEONE WHO IS COOOOOOL The Hip, Barenaked Ladies, GooGoo Dolls, they made it. BRAVO. the odds the northern pikes, anyone that rocked lees palace without going to fame-
They were so huge for a couple years in the 90s... at least here in Canada, I remember this video and eat my brain as number one music videos on muchmusic.
What I love about the 90's, there were a bunch of Canadian bands that had hit after hit that they never received the recognition they should've received. The Odds, Sloan, Moist, I Mother Earth should've exploded but alas was not meant to be. All we have are memories.
Do these guys know how to construct a pop song or what?! How they didn’t get more famous (outside of Canada) is beyond me - it sure isn’t lack of talent. Great harmonies, wry lyrics, wicked tight and hooks coming out the yin yang. They had so many great songs that just reeked of HIT SINGLE! Wow, super under-rated band.
@@MathieuLLF well, for me Sloan was not as entertaining - maybe I havent listened to enough of their catalogue, but of what I have heard, I simply don't understand the hype. This is, of course, my subjective musical opinion.
@@benjaminmcfarlane3807 fair enough! Music is a personal opinion! I was just teasing anyway! They're both amazing bands! You should totally listen to more Sloan though!
BCboy: For real----I don't think I've ever seen this video, and I like the time lapse tricks, as well as the pretty color scheme. This was the Odds' first breakthrough (and only) U.S. hit, yet they broke up some time afterwards---go figure. Believe or not, this song was originally written for the soundtrack of Friends, but it didn't make the cut for some reason. But yeah, they should have blown up bigger in the U.S.---never understood why that didn't happen for them, either.
Most of the 90's was the best, the end of the 90's was awful. But this is another classic that I remember from growing up. Listening to this stuff, as I approach the ripe young age of 30, brings back amazing memories of my youth.
Same here! Best FM station in my lifetime. This band, Sloan, BNL, Cowboy Junkies, Moev, Grapes of Wrath, 24 Gone, plus all the American & UK bands of that perfect early 90s era. Still spin their CDs frequently at home.
Man, I was 12 when this came out and thought the video was the most amazing thing and would flip out every time it came on! I miss when America got MuchMusic :(
What year did it come out? I'm trying to figure out how old I was at the time; I want to say '97 (which would have made me 14 at the time) but I could be wrong about that.
@@alondathomas293 Yes, you are right; now that you mention it, I remember I was just about to start grade 8 when it came out, which would have been the summer of '96. So I was 13 when it came out. Thanks for clearing that up!
One of the greatest artists Canada ever produced! I love this song, as well as the video. The video owes a great debt to fellow Canadian Norman McLaren.
I don't think I ever would have found this catchy tune without Satelitte radio! Thanks Satelitte radio, you indeed do rock, even if you are miles and miles away!
He looks like me walking with vertigo! Lol. I love this so much. The singer has such an adorable face and smile and the lyrics are fantastic, along with , well, everything!
I once heard that they used to be their own opening act, too. Not sure if it's true, but the story I heard was that they would come out as the opener "Dawn Patrol," doing covers, and then take a break and come back out as "Odds" to do their own stuff.
The Riv!!!! I'm a a TO girl who's about to turn 60. I saw the Odds, the Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip and oh so may more when I lived in the 6. So many great memories. ;)
In natural selection I've avoided all detection And the tender bits underneath All with window dressing and calculated guessing And a bark bigger than my teeth It was the suit that got me the gig It was the tear that got me the girl I'm a sheep in this wolf clothing I'm a picture that I'm holding of someone who is cool Soul like a thimble swallowed up in symbols Wanting what I don't need If sympathy's the answer I'll have temporary cancer But that's not what I'll have, you believe It was the suit that got me the gig It was the tear that got me the girl I'm a sheep in this wolf clothing I'm a picture that I'm holding of someone who is cool Someone who is cool Close but kind of meatless Like actors who play Jesus in movies of the week What other people wish for oozes from every pore I'm the coffee not the sleep And I'm the song about the song That once said something new I'm a scandal that's unfolding I'm a picture that I'm holding of someone who is cool Someone who is cool
Killer song that I just thought of randomly this week. I always loved these guys and think they deserved a bigger audience. While the rest of the world was listening to grunge, I was into power pop. Still am!
They released a perfect album... And then they disappeared... They only got my ear because WXPN here in Philadelphia played cuts off of Nest extensively. I never saw them in person until this video😂
Yep, they only got a tiny bit of airplay in the United States unfortunately. I heard them once or twice on WEQX in Albany, NY. WXPN is a killer station BTW! :)
Lucky enought to see Odds at Danforth music hall in Toronto last weekend, still a very tight, amazing sounding band, with something to say. Their only crime was probably being canadian, or they would have been bigger then Oasis.
I saw them in a small club in Pontiac, MI in the 90s. It was a great show! I want to say The Presidents of The United States was also on the bill, but I don't remember for sure.
Saw Trans-Canada Highwaymen (Canadian rock royalty) tonight outside Buffalo and finally met the ridiculously talented Craig Northey from the ridiculously talented band, The Odds. What a thrill. I loved the Odds. Whatever A and R man f'ed that up on both sides of the border should admit they weren't good at what they did. The Odds were in the top tier of Canadian rock, and somehow weren't included in it. A crying shame.
Wait a minute, wait a minute You know, this is - excuse me - a damn fine song I've heard - I can't tell you how many - songs in my life and this, this is one of the best
I used to go to The Roxy in Vancouver B.C. and these guys were the house band known as Dawn Patrol. They were a tight band even back then (although their drummer wasn’t the best). I was happy to see these guys “make it” but was a little disappointed they never achieved a higher level of fame. Good times though from what I remember 😂
so, i worked for cher, which was a letdown but my mom was a fan. i worked for the tragically hip, which was awesome. i wish i worked for the odds, even as brief. genius
