@@pupbenny I suspect it’s more that they either lost their weapon or simply don’t have it on hand, being too lazy to carry their weapon around with them
The rather apathetic nature of them reminds me of folks in the medical industry. My own Mom had this happen where she kinda had to learn to shut her emotions off at least a little when treating patients. On some rough days she had a harder time getting her emotions to kick back in to a normal level. So sometimes her "nurse mode" makes her seem cold when really it's the brain trying to avoid possible trauma temporarily.
That´s actually true. I hear a lot "They don´t care, just come, do something and go away". I was in hospital for week after car crash. But when you see how goddamn many people have to take care, are on tight schedule and generally docs and nurses are understaffed, they took awesome care of me.
@@miroslavzima8856 "Just come, do something then go away." That's literally what they are supposed to do. Nurses aren't therapists, and they aren't the patients family. They can provide brief emotional support, but it isn't required. They are there to help with treatment. That's why people without families are at such a huge disadvantage in life, they will never have good emotional support.
In my experience, this is less true in the psychiatric field when it's for involuntary patients, they are just there for a buck from the pharmaceutical industry the patients mental health be damned and I know this because they would know about the atrocities it has done before medical school, in forced psychiatry they have killed their patients mental health the one thing the profession exists to fix, and you know what they say once something is dead you can't treat it, and if you research it, involuntary psychiatry is an epidemic, the patients are treated to sadistic treatments, and only there just to shove them with drugs, and destroy their mental health for a buck and maybe for a fix, but voluntary psychiatry has helped people, involuntary psychiatry has hurt more than it has helped, so much so involuntary psychiatry should be made a crime as it technically falls under psychological torture, and regular torture as it also destroys quality of life
I think another reason that the Interns' lips are stitched is because they might have sharp teeth and a lethal bite. I feel like before becoming the Vykkers' slaves, the interns were psychotic predators that can be relaxed only by listening to music.
As i said on other post, they might had a claw or hooves on their legs, that would be too dangerous or noisy to the vykkers after subjugating the interns. Is a good reason to force them to walk on stumps.
They probably don't sleep on the job because of the drugs and that might be why the Vykkers don't care. It increases performance more then it costs. That seems to fit pretty well into your other theories.
Coming back I have an addition. They are also probably addicted which would also benefit the Vykkers as they rely on them for the supply. So they can't just run away. That would then also check the "manipulation"-box that almost every other lower rank employee has in those factorys.
I can can imagen then texting to each other on their phones when their just 2 feet away from each other and when if an onlooker asked who their texting and they point to each other with deadpan stairs
The phrase "using the phones like crazy" makes this post about a thousand times better honestly. Makes me imagine them all like how a "you kids and your damn phones" parent would think kids nowadays are like, every single Intern with a phone in hand and their eyes glued to it's screen.
Maybe the music is a drug. In Dune there is a musical drug called Semuta. It creates euphoric, sedated, and complacent condition in the user. In the books the drug is most popular amongst Harkonnen security forces. They have a role, and life much like the interns.
When I was a kid, I used to think that the Interns and the Vykkers were actually part of the same species. Mainly, I came to the conclusion that Interns were the males of the species, while Vykkers were the females. I was a dumb kid, rip
If you were just learning about insects at the time it would make sense to me too. With bugs the differences between male and female can be weirdly huge, and out of all oddworld species the vykkers are pretty close in looks. So yeah i could have easily believed that as well.
I think the vykkers willing gave the interns drugs to keep them in line. Addicts will do good work to make sure they don't experience a delay in their supplies of drugs. It is also more common than you may think for nurses and others working in the medical field to be addicts that steal what drugs they can from the hospital too.
I've heard that those headphones are actually used to pump drugs into their system along with nutrition, they hear with their antenna and don't have ears.
This is how the Glukkons got mudokons to willingly work for them in Abe’s Exodus. The brew they gave away at first to get them all addicted. “Then those Glukkons told them that if they wanted to work, they could have all the brew they wanted… They fell for it,” -Abe
I think interns and vykers have stitched “stumps” because they used to be aquatic and had to give themselves feet and likely had Tentacles or something to help them swim.
Honestly some day I truely hope that we get to see / interact with the past versions of these races. Like a black magic glukkon, a non modded Vykker and so on. And not just as enemies. I mean aparrently they all use to be friends back in the day before that cursed moon... Thinking on it, it is almost like that moon was designed to mess with the order of the world.
Nice vid! I was always curious about these guys. The way you put it that they “escape” reality makes a lot of sense. The Vykkers are the only beings in Oddworld that enjoy what Vykkers do, I feel like even Glukkons would be extremely uncomfortable by their gruesome surgery methods.
The Interns are probably the creepiest enemies in the entire Oddworld universe. And that's just from what we know about them, to theorise what's actually going on in their heads adds a whole other level of darkness to their characters. A lot of people asked for one about the Interns lately, so I bumped it to the top of my list! I hope you enjoy! :) *I should note Humphrey didn't want to collect creatures, I was just using it as an example of a time when a Vykker does a job instead of getting an Intern to do it for whatever reason. I'd also recommend looking up DreamTheorem's Kaagrax Intern artwork, it's amazing!
Question, have you considered the nature of the Vykkers work? They are all about science, technological, medical etc. It is delicate. And if their slaves were to be disgruntled and angry then years of work could be lost in a single 'accident'. So the Vykkers can't treat the Interns the way the Glukkons treat the Muddokons. So I find it more likely that it is less them stealing drugs than it is the Vykkers supply them with it or even put it in their food to make the Interns more obedient. Combine that with some minor freedoms like being allowed to listen to music and they have a happier workforce who is less likely to rebel.
Can you do one on Alf and Toby, it would be nice to see an video talk about an specific Mudoken/S that aren’t Abe, and there is surprisingly a lot more lore to them then you may think at an first look.
Reading through Dear Alf made me realise Alf as a character has evolved and changed more over the years then Abe has in any of the pre-Soulstorm games.
You knows crazy. That the Veykars have more respect for their employees then most real life businesses. Aside from the whole. Mouth stitching thing. Like he said in the video. If they do their job and do it well. Why stop them from doing it.
Im pretty sure, though i may be misremembering, that these guys legs are all stitched up because the actual tarsals, metatarsals and phalanges of the feet have become vestigial and useless to the point that amputating them improves function and reduces injury (not unlike human wisdom teeth or the lower limbs of the glukkons). I assume the vykkers would generally replace them with robo bits when necessary, and the interns are just left as they are because who cares.
When you mentioned about the Shock Rocker not being in Munch's Oddysee it reminded me of the weaponless slig... Which if I remember correctly can only be seen once in the game. On The Mudokon Fortress level 🤔
Unless I remember incorrectly, I think it was also the first ever Slig encountered in Munch's Oddysee, at the end of the level after Raisin's Cave (I can't remember the name). Weirdly, the Oddworld Wikia states that these slacker Sligs were cut from the game even though they weren't. But I do love their rarity!
Y'know, Quite A Few People Have Brought Up The Idea Of A Slig Uprising (Especially Given Soulstorm's Good Ending) But I've Never Heard Anyone Talk About An Intern Uprising, Given That They're Another "Slave Race" As You Said. Maybe This Could Even Be Mixed With The Hypothetical You Brought Up Near The End Of The Video. Assuming Munch's Oddysee Gets A Complete Reimagining In The Vein Of Soulstorm, Perhaps At Some Point Abe And Munch Find An Intern Breaking Down Because They Can't Seem To Drown Out Reality With Drugs And Music. And Eventually They Convince Them To Come With And Be Free (Then Idunno I Guess Word Spreads Somehow And A Bunch Of Interns End Up Fleeing).
If you want to go even darker with Interns, maybe Vykkers intentionally allow their drugs to be stolen by Interns - it would give the Interns a way to feel their fighting back at the system a little bit but would also then get them addicted to the drugs which has them work longer and harder... though that begs the question how do they take the drugs (unless it's in a syringe)?
If the interns couldn't do drugs and music they would probably rip off the stitches of their mouths and scream: "O make the irritating noises just stop please!!!!" Where if Nov 5062 is also true on his theory then it would continue with this sentence: "Otherwise, I'll devour every living thing other than my fellow interns, mmmm delicious!!!!!!" (In a creepy terrifying way of speaking) a lot.
I remember irl guys in work camps and many mid clasd labor positions who are subservient to authority high on coke and energy drnks and dependant on boss good favour to get the fixes nessecary for them to be such rabid workaholics in a vicious cycle. Train and truck drivers, camp operators and all sorts of dudes i used to roll with would outperform me on just the cocktails they consumed to be superhuman and cared nothing for stress fatigue or unworkable demands.
It’s canon that they’re their own species, I’ll be it, one related to vykkers evolutionary wise. Though, I theorise they were planned to be a stage in Vykkers lifecycle (as seen/implied in the concept art) but were changed to simply be a separate race.
Ya I definitely think your right the interns are mutch better then there sligs conter parts. They don’t just module around or sleep on the job they patrol in formation the guy at the back always always looking behind and turning slower then the other. Or taking strategic point at Magee junction. And have armed that cover their in tire body not just there backs The vaika don’t just lock them selfs fortifide office and just fill the building with security guards. Because there so mutch more hand one they have intern body guards how fallow they around in formation and when you attack thraw them selves between you ahead of there vieka masters destipe them having fire arms and the vika having clevers. And yes if how many saps and bombs it takes to kill them means any think they do have more heals except for the big bros but they still sleep on the job. Plus they can do others task like computer work and lad assisn jobs the sligs can’t and lack the caulal sadistic nature to each other. So ya there definitely better security for but this is some what off set buy there lower numbers likely do the there amathrodite reproduction compared to the slig queens. Also thaw the inteerns are better security I think the sligs are still better has a con concoring army and hunters To there greater number and the interns lacking a contor part to big bros or flyers
Hey @pupbenny i really love your voice and nice you like the oddworld serie also verry much😄 have a nice day or try to have a nice day. 😊 Interns are really underated not like glukkons or vykkers im was thinking how they look like without a headcap and normal mouth. I hope just like you we found them in future games.
Im sure you've all already made the comparison of this game to the regime and then POV of when Nazi Germany prevailed. The subsets of classes of individuals all cast very similarly to how their entire lifestyles parallels these characteristics. You had war grunts (sligs) interns (scientists) so on and so on. They arent far off how it all went down as pharmaceuticals kept the people going, givng them reasons to live and stay despite knowing its not the right things to do. Ect ect.
No it's not "almost a metaphor" it is explicitly and deliberately metaphor. Just like the entirety of oddworld being a direct criticism of capitalism. Weird how ppl can choose to not see that.
Downloaded a mod ages ago I found on the Oddworld Forums. Can't remember where exactly it was, I think I looked up 'Munch's Oddysee level select' or something.
It’s said in Dear Alf Abe’s stitches loosened overtime which allowed him to talk and presumably eat solid food. As for the Interns, my best guess is they blitz whatever food they want in a blender and drink it from a straw through the gaps in their stitches.
i always wonder, given the lore of work slave work and others what would be a game story of the working class of the interns and the slugs if they just call it quits and just had it with the system. sooner or later something going to give out and someone is going to go all right given this world as long your playing there game they don't care what tools you have at times so in turn its only a boiling cooking pot ready to blow.
I dont really know if I would interpret them wearing headphones as them wanting to escape from the horrors being done to the subjects in Vikers Labs. It makes more sense that its simply a caricature of how interns are seen in modern america. Novice kids not interested in the real work they are working towards, and just simply doing the bare minimum while they listen to their newfangled rock music and complete mindless tasks. I dont feel like they meant it in any other way
As a kid, Interns made me quite scared. Their look, their stitched mouths and movement. I really look forward to them in future Oddworld games, it would as satisfying as seeing more in Soulstorm ^^
The crouched position the interns have was always curious to me. I wonder if they weren't originaly standing completly before being subjugated and forced to stand at a vykker's size or close. Makes sense too cuz, them being servants to vykkers, means they have to adapt to tools and habitations that favour Vykkers mostly. I wonder, too, if the stump on their "feet" didn't bear a single claw, or hoof, that could be considered either dangerous or noisy to the vykkers. Would be a good reason to force them to walk on their fleshy stumps.
Yeah, the stitched mouths and especially the stitched stumps disturb the hell out of me. Love it! Thanks for the deep dive into these creepy lil dudes.
I've never played Munch's Oddysee, but I have watched playthroughs of it, and I can tell you that Interns very clearly take way, WAY more punishment than Sligs do to put them down.
