People bash Unity for all the crap that's been pumped out with it. But if Unity didn't exist, those people would've used Unreal Engine or something else, and THAT would get the bad rep.
@AniGamer Reviews Yeah, like City Skylines, Genshin Impact, Valheim, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Legends of Runeterra, Fall Guys, League of Legends: Wild Rift and Subnautica - to name a few.
Unity can literally do exactly what unreal can do, unreal just has a 'better' name then Unity sadly. Also surprisingly a lot of games are made in Unity like escape from tarvo, just most people don't leave the Unity splash art on unlike with unreal
I mean... Genshin Impact is a good example too, albeit a much more cell-shaded and stylized example. And yes, Genshin Impact IS actually made with Unity, as suprising as it might be for a game of this quality There's also Escape from Tarkov, which is, imo a perfect showcase of how far you can take the Unity engine in term of realistic details
Lorn Lanning said for Exodus that it was a rushed story cause Sony told them make a game for next Christmas and he couldn't write the story he wanted. So to him it was kinda a disappointing but with the success of New N Tasty he was able to make the story he wanted for Exodus.
It wasn't Sony that rushed them, it was GT interactive who wanted a sequel to oddysee, but yeah Lorne said they had about 9 months to complete exoddus and they had to reuse assets like Paramites and Scrabs
I'm currently playing through Soulstorm and while I do like it, I think I would've preferred a remake of Abe's Exoddus rather than a complete reimagining of it. They've cut out too much of what made Exoddus great - the music, the Mudanchee and Modomo levels, Bonewerkz, paramites and scrabs, the quicksave option and, of course, exploding farts! The thing that made these games so unique from the beginning was that you played as a lowly meat factory worker with no weapons - all you had to survive were stealth, chanting and using the environment (set traps/bombs etc) against the bad guys. The new crafting system, while adding a fun new element and way of fighting to the series, also took something away for me.
Please, please let ppl know that Soulstorm is an improvement upon New n Tasty and a quality Oddworld game. It's receiving unfair criticism and is rated 16 points lower than NnT.
Man, the original Abe’s Odyssey intrigued me and terrified me. I can still hear the original, robotic toy sounding walk they make and when I accidentally was too loud, them saying “whAt”. And their menacing beavis and butthead type laugh they make after killing you.
Ikr, Oddworld was genuine spooky and that's why I couldn't stop thinking about it. I had chills in the zones out of rupturefarms, being chased by that random Scrab, and then entering the bluest night, with the "talking" fireflies...
Nice video! The only criticism I have for it was your comparison with the lighting, really you should also consider the original game on PS1 and it's art direction. New 'n' Tasty might look pretty and have give scenes variety, but It doesn't have any meaning other than looking nice, the original PS1 game had a focus in looking like a realistic alien world, So flashy bloom effects and unrealistic uses of colour in environments wouldn't make sense. I think Soulstorm does a way better job at capturing the originals direction and attempts to give environments a more consistent lighting in line with its depressing tone. The only moments of more fanciful lighting are in either the important spiritual keeper cave or deep within the factories at there powerful core, like it makes sense to make those more colourful to extenuate there importance and power within the world... I know that was a long ramble, but theres more to art direction and design then just making something look colourful and pretty.
No hate for Soulstorm.. But for me the first game was "Exodus" and there for this stings a bit when the "Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty " Is so nice. I kinda wished for a remaster of Exodus then a remake or reimagining... Thats all. No hate for Soulstorm, just hoped for a remaster of exodus. No matter if it was rushed or not.. And well you cannot chant tro walls.. etc.. kinda wierd. Why cant the spirit go around the wall.. or tro it like before. But again SoulStorm is a totaly diffrent game than it's roots Exodus. So no hate for it.. just not what I hoped for :P
reduced fall damage, an inventory bar, and double jumping. Great, yet another platformer with no feeling. Total betrayal of all the elements that made the OG games great.
Thanks for making these cool videos. I’m a long time game dev and I appreciate your content dude. Enjoyable and interesting analysis and presented in a chill way. Very much enjoy them 💪
Great review! I definitely think that this is a superior quality of a game but to be honest, I would’ve definitely liked to see a New n’ Tasty aspect on Exodus. If you haven’t played the sequel before, it is amazing and there are numerous new features that were pushed out in an extremely short development stand!
soulstorm is kinda sabotaged by its first 5 levels being reallllly tutorialized. as soon as the game opens up with your full craft toolkit it gets much more fun.
@@jayr7991 Maybe, but Soulstorm is difficult in a very annoying way. The checkpoint system makes it so that if you fail a challenge that had lootables in the room, after you respawn you have to loot everything again. You also can't reset the checkpoints without going to a different one. Exodus had a quiksave system that allowed you to save whenever you wanted and it didn't an issue with having to repeat simple things every time you died. So while I think Soulstorm is technically more difficult than exodus at times, I think a lot of the difficulty stems from bad game design instead of genuine challenge.
Oh man I've been holding out for this.... You're really telling me it's not in the game? This was the BEST part of Exodus. Everything came to a head when you possessed the glukkons and commanded sligs and stuff.
@@Etheral101 That really sucks and I almost want to stop playing entirely now. I think it was the only thing that kept me going because honestly the game isn't that great.
@@ryno4ever433 It gutted me too. Love Oddworld and was really looking forward to this. I feel theyve changed too much of what I loved about Exodus (even the possessing farts lol) and the bolted on crafting
@@Etheral101 Yea, I definitely agree there. I feel like they could have even gotten away with cutting scrabs and mudokons because of their presence in odyssey, but the glukkon possession levels were a unique section of the game that let you go on a bit of a power trip that was kind of like a reward for making it that far. And then you got to blow them up. How much better can it get than that? The puzzles in Soulstorm are a lot sloppier too. Sometimes the way I finish the puzzles feel unintended or cheesy. They took away quiksave, an improvement added in exodus that made it way more fun than odyssey, letting you experiment more easily. The mood system was cool, the game speak has been completely simplified, but to be fair that isn't too much of a loss. The crafting does feel bolted on like you said. It barely feels like it belongs and doesn't really need to exist. I tried to like it. It's not AWFUL, it's just not good. I have sort of enjoyed the game, but a lot of that has been mired with frustration at the bugs and checkpoint system and lack of features that made exodus so cool. I'm probably just going to replay exodus when I'm done with it to wash my mouth out.
If I have time I'll certainly look into it. I'm really excited to finish this GTA documentary though. That will be my main focus for the next few weeks. Got a special comparison coming out tomorrow that I'm working on currently first
I dont understand nothing about Oddworld but i am curious. Soulstorm is a remake of the levels or in story too? Because looks like a sequel to New Tasty
So, New N Tasty is a remaster/ remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey, which came out in 1997. The creator, Lorne Lanning, was surprised by the game’s success in 1997, and needed another 3 years to make the sequel. But the developers forced him to make it in 9 months, so Abe’s Exoddus was released in 1998. Oddworld: Soulstorm is the original game that Lorne Lanning wanted to make. So it’s not a remake of Abe’s Exoddus or New J Tasty, it’s a entirely new game. If this game looks interesting, you should play the Oddworld games. They’re the most underrated video game of all time. (Sorry this was so long)
Funny how on PS4 for PSN+ members got this game for "free". I quote free because you have to pay for the membership but for a year subscription kind of pays for itself overall and I've came into some series because of it. Oddworld I may give a try now.
I believe the PS Plus freebie is only on the ps5, on ps4 you have to buy it. also nothing was Free on the ps plus, the subscription on the least is 7$ for one month or something, and $60 for one year. the true free games are the 10 games Sony have offered free of charge recently under the Play At Home, aka. please! don't be mad at us for our recent screw ups, here take these free games.
@@anasbakhit4303 PS+ is $5 per month with a year sub and it's been superb on PS5. Unlike Games with Gold we get new next gen games. Not sure why u are hating on PS+ or the FREE games with plat at home initiative. An initiative that deserves NO criticism. Giving free games bc of Covid and giving 10 million dollars to indie devs affected by Covid plus setting up a fund. Man stop your bs propaganda.
@@anasbakhit4303 and honestly it disgusting to criticize the Play at Home Initiative. It's for ppl struggling bc of Covid, free games, and 10 million to developers affected by Covid. Sony set up a fund for devs as well. Seriously get fucked, go hump your Xbox or PC or Switch. Whichever platform it is that makes u hate on Sony.
It’s only free on PS5. Now while I can understand that Sony is trying to push the new system, like any company would, with the current state of things, this is unfair. I would purchase a PS5 if I could actually acquire one, but it is damn near impossible lately. They should have just made it free with PSPlus for both PS5 AND PS4 owners alike. It was a shitty move on their part, and just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Just goes to show you what kind of company they truly are. Many companies have made changes due to Covid and other societal factors, Sony could have done the same.
I have not played Soulstorm yet, but, I find it disappointing that it appears that the animals like scrabs, paramites and fleeches have been removed :( Has anyone played through to confirm this? Is it just Sligs, Slogs, and Glukkons?
You're right. So many missing things from original oddworld exoddus like wild animals, music, puzzles, blind maddukens, explosive fart lol .. Etc kinda disappointing for soulstorm
While the crafting is a bit weird, I like the idea of it expanding the game's puzzle possibilities. Now, Exoddus remake please. That one was great too!
This was the supposed Exoddus remake/reimagining. Even though I liked Soulstorm, I could help feel a little disappointed about all the missing features from Exoddus.
Hey soulstorm is not a remake. It's the second game in the quintoly of Oddworld Inhabitants. It's a new game with a whole new direction. Exoddus was rushed for next year christmas at that time "1997" (i think), later the company called it a spin-off, or a bonus "big lvl" for Oddysees.
I haven't played it yet but a little bit disappointed they left some things out exodus was the first game I got for my ps1 and the only game my dad has ever enjoyed playing I kinda wish they did remake it like with oddysee as it was a big part in what got me into these types of games in the first place and you cant not love Abe
@@jayr7991 I never said the previous were superior I and I don't think I'm the only one who would have liked to see a couple of old mechanics to remain and like I said I haven't played it yet waiting until I get a ps5 to get the proper experience as it does look really nice and still looks pretty hard to get through some areas
The new one is really good I have very much fun with it but the old one where a bit better they had something that you can't repeat any more... I'd like to play the original ones in HD or 4k 👍😍🤭
Though it’s flawed and often frustrating (especially the parts where you have to defend hundreds of mudokons escaping at once on ladders), I did enjoy this game. I was initially disappointed that this wasn’t going to be a direct remake of Exoddus, but I’m ultimately glad they told a unique story. I’m looking forward to what they might make next.
I couldn't recommend this game enough. Had an excellent time playing it apart from some progression halting launch bugs that have since been fixed. It's such a good love letter to the series and I'd love to see more
I'm so happy that Soulstorm is out 💙💙💙 TToTT the new designs - I mean holy sh*t!! It looks SO GOOD! I absolutely agree with the "maze like places"...and I have to say that I'm a liiiittle bit annoyed by that because it really doesn't feel like a "real place", I can not really enjoy it as much as I wanted to... Also I miss the intense different colors like you mentioned with the comparison of Soulstorm and New&Tasty. I have yet to experience the full game and the different levels and stuff~ but in the old game there were SO MANY differences in the level-designs, I'm a little bit afraid that it might look all the same now... ^^' When I heard of the backpack the first time, I was totally against that~ but meanwhile I think it's a nice new little thing for Abe, we should let him have something nice for once! :3
Incredible review, we need u on Metacritic. It's a travesty that critics trashed Soulstorm despite being superior to New N Tasty. How can Soulstorm be 16 points lower than NnT? There's some scary stuff going on in the media. Something's not right.
Tell em man. So much unfair criticism. The game is a 68 Metacritic, New n Tasty is an 84 on PS4. It not fair. Spread the word that this game is great. We want more Oddworld and this game deserves positive reviews.
My biggest problem with this video is that soul storm is not a remake or a reimagining. It is considered the next game in a series. Edit: Oddworld was created to be a quintology (a 5 part story). Exodus was supposed to be the second part of the story but it was rushed as the creators were pressure to produce the sequel in a year. Lorne Lanning stated that Soul Storm is the sequel and part two to the story that they actually envisioned.
wow the 2 moons basically confirm that the next 3 games wont necessarily follow abe. in the og odyssee there was only the mudokon moon. it took until munch to introduce the 2nd moon. but they have already teased 2 moons from the start. im pumped
Growing up with both games abe's oddysee and abe's exodus I was happy when I heard that new and tasty was in the making. Though because of software issues I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the previous games. It was good but not as good as the originals. When soulstorm was annonced I was thrilled, because of oddworlds updates and teasers which looked much better than new and tasty. When I started playing Soulstorm I was a bit angry, for it felt like they had messed up the game controls as I found it difficult to play the game with a keyboard, something that wasn't an issue in the past. But I found my ps4 controller and plugged it into my pc and the lord behold, it was great! I love how they changed from doing an entire remaster to an entirely different game and story. The cut-scenes looked awesome, the voices sounded better than new and tasty and the gameplay was also impressive. I love the game 10/10 and am looking forward to the continuation .
Something within me disagrees with the sight of Abe double-jumping on a visceral level. Not saying I won't give it a try though cause this game looks cool af.
I played a little bit of Soulstorm, but my jirl wasn’t feelin’ it too much as far as watchin’ me play it. We’d just come from It Takes Two, so I think her expectations are set pretty high right now.
The glukkons in new n' tasty look a lot better than soulstorm in my opinion, evil creepy looking things instead of the character soulstorm to their charater models, specifically the eyes
@@ryno4ever433 I just don't understand this. Weren't they in og abes exodus? And in new n tasty? Meaning there was modern coding for them already written?
@@mezzuna Yes and yes. But I'm not sure that New n Tasty was also made in Unity, so just because there was code written for them in that game doesn't necessarily mean that it translates to this game. Also this game isn't meant to be a remaster of exodus so they had creative license to add or remove things as they pleased.
@@ryno4ever433 oh, fair enough I suppose. The old get out of remake free clause these days! Re3R tremendously dissatisfied me with this type of nonsense. I'd buy new n tasty if it's still a good game on its own right though, have you played it through yet? Are you a resident evil fan? I just don't understand for the life of me why tyrants code wasn't used to patrol the hallways of the police station and why Carlos was there instead of Jill. Still confused me. Such an inappropriate way to subvert expectations!
The gameplay is a little shallow for my liking. Taking the game for what it is rather than what I’d like it to be I’m having fun with it but gamespeak is nowhere as extensive as it used to be and there’s a lack of content when compared to exodus mainly in terms of who you can posses I.e only sligs here but scrabs paramites, sligs and Glukkons in Exodus
honestly i prefer Abe exodus to soul storm a lot of the charm has been lost, game play more janky, mass amount of bugs and for me it dosent feel as epic as the original sequel, and old game is way less frustrating
I find that the 2D gameplay of Soulstorm is extremely disappointing when you have such beautiful and sprawling environments in the background. They're so enticing, yet in a way, untouchable. Id love to see another 3D, perhaps open world Oddworld game to really interact with these landscapes to their fullest extent.
Usually, most levels have layers that go deeper and deeper into the background. This seems like an odd complaint. That said, Strangers Wrath was excellent.
I'm so upset I can't play this yet. I completed odyssey and exodus back in the day both 100% completed... long before RU-vid walk through tutorials were invented.
I’m really disappointed by the MISSING classic ODDWORLD MENU UI. Why get rid of that? It just feels wrong when seeing the simple UI used in Soulstorm gameplay & the menus. It takes a big hit in the ODDWORLD universe feeling. They made it in New ‘N’ Tasty, but not Soulstorm?? Why??? 😕
Not entirely. On an artistic level, sure, but the lighting is superior on a technical level and those underground levels showcase this. Soulstorm is literally made by Lorn Lanning. New N Tasty wasn't. This is what the Oddworld creator intended and the game at large trumps New n Tasty.
This game is a hollow husk of its former self, they ruined the way abe and the mudokans look... how this is even comparable to exoddus is beyond me, so many missing parts, creatures and elements cut(mudokans moods). I mean come on who doesnt want to posses an exploding fart? Or fight to the death as a Scrab. The original s**** all over this.
This man gets me. And Exodus was my first Abe game.. so this "remake" makes.. me want to play the old one. I hoped for a remaster lol I also miss the old Brewmaster..
F Lorne for making another reboot sequel 20+ yrs later that ends tbc. Guy literally can not make a stand alone, self contained story for one game. It sucks they had promise way back then, when I'd get oddworld christmas cards from ow inhabitants.
While understandable, I can also understand Lorne's attempt here. Even back with the originals, the world, lore and story of Oddworld was too grand to be told into a single game and its why from moment one the idea of the Quintology was planets into people. Yes it sucks when creators take forever and eventually have to still leave it as a cliffhanger, but sometimes these long gaps are not out of bad ill but rather outside circumstances like game companies not giving the chance. Specially with Soulstorm, its clear OI is trying to tell a grand tale that would be too bad if it was wrapped all up in a single second game.
@ Vincent Perez, By stand alone, I meant that a single game story that plugs into a greater whole, well which Munches Oddyssey is, and strangers wrath too, I suppose. But those are Microsoft produced, whereas all Abe's are primarily Sony backed. Lorne changed sides allot. Anyway, I felt like this reboot sequel should've left loose ends but had a concluded story, not just a game to lead up to the next one, which this game feels like, imo.
@@anthonycarlisle6184 The move to Xbox wasn't really much of a desire but a necessity. One that sadly ended up being more of a hindrance than a blessing but that's game developing for ya. Again, I do understand your stance and respect it; I can see why would some may feel it feels more like a series of stairs rather than the next floor in the building that is the Oddworld's grand story. I feel that it may be because that was basically what Exoddus was; a in between story that was meant to just lead into Munch without no big fanfare. Not matter how much retooling you do to add more to the story, unless you have enough budget to make it twice as big, the foundation is still an in between tale but alas, OI did make a poll of what people wanted next and everyone picked Exoddus remake over way more aluring possibilities. Hopefully with this game doing good, the next instalment will be something that feels much grander and a more conclusive story into the nature of the quintology, but for what they had to work with I personally feel Soulstorm was pretty good. It's always fun to see other people's perspective tho so thanks to share your opinion in a chill manner
@ Vincent, For sure, differing opinions are actually a good thing, if there's meaning behind it besides 'just to be different', imo. But I'm from a different generation, maybe you are too haha Thanks for the oi poll, didn't know that. Takes some heat off Lorne & crew now knowing they're just kinda doing what the fans asked for to some degree.
@@anthonycarlisle6184 Personally it was kind of a shame. There were some great options in that poll: a reworking of Munch's Oddyssey, a brand new original tale, A sequel to Stranger's Wrath, even the fabled "Sligstorm" concept that was once suggested. But they all lost to Exoddus remake XD Still, from what I have read and heard, the course of what will be next after Soulstorm is already set in stone and will be continuing the story, so fingers crossed for Soulstorm to sell good so we can get some progression going.
Im kid of 90 so I play both games on ps1 multiple time. I wasn't fan of new and tasty (more candy like), and easier - I was play original maaany years later so it wasn't kid vs adult skill level. But overall I enjoy new and tasty as good remake. Soulstorm? I played 2 hours and uninstalled (thanks for free for ps plus ). That game looks really nice but its not same type of game that I expected and like to play. I had feeling that instead looking for solution, I need repeat scene as much times needed to find good timing - sounds weird but its hard to express it in other way. When I look at that review, indeed scene to scene looks like puzzle placed by force sometimes (those labyrinths for example - mines? perfectly fine, I would expect such mine shafts up there, but not those weird structures in middle of valleys - duno, from video I see in future part of game we have mechanic elements so that def increase on good side. Mechanic changes - nope, as said, they changed game feeling so much that it reached type of gameplay that Im not a fan. I can clearly see its a good game, design, ideas, execution, but its different game in that universum - just like that fps oddworld game if I remember correctly. Ohh well. I hope many will enjoy that game
Pretty disappointed with how they gutted the gamespeak, also constantly having to loot lockers and trash cans is tedious. I love oddworld but still haven't finished soulstorm yet due to time and getting hardstuck on two occasions by bugs.
I've had zero bugs five levels in and overall this game is vastly superior to New n Tasty. Visuals, controls, story, and modern touches. Audio design is impressive as well. The game is a joy on PS5 with DualSense.
@@jayr7991 I really don't understand how you can say audio design is superior to new n tasty. The audio design in Soulstorm is the standout WORST part of it.
Honestly wish they'd have just remade Exodus. Soul Storm is even more disappointing than the Resident Evil 3make, in my opinion. The story pacing in Soul Storm is so slow and meandering that it becomes genuinely boring before you even reach Necrum. If this is the type of story they envisioned back when Exodus was in development but couldn't pull off due to time-constraints, then the time-crunch was a blessing in disguise.
I think they overthink/overkill Soulstorm... the original games idk there where simple in their way this one "Soulstorm" kind idk how to express myself but is to much...i love the graphics idk the story sill looks interesting....but... the 3d water and oil bottles are like wtf....not to mention the other things.. still interesting.... i already tried to paly at a friend house BUT mannn..... the controls on keyboard are the WORSE some of the buttons are switched and cannot play or disfigures what to press due to the facts is showing only the gamepad layout...
The originals were amazing. I was soo excited when I heard that New 'N Tasty was coming out. Once I got it, though, I was completely let down. I didn't even get an hour in to find that I hated it. The control scheme was the most unique of all features in the game and to find how they completely gutted it was highly disappointing. But rather than return my copy, they mentioned somewhere they had an Abe's Exoddus remake in the works if they made enough to put it into action. Being that I'm not a fan of the 2.5D unfitting look of platformers, I didn't like the look in the first place. I'd have been happy if they had just updated the graphics to look better and leave the two games exactly the way the were. Soul Storm released and I grabbed a copy thinking it was the Exoddus remake they promised and as unimpressed as I was with the first installment I waited a month or two before even giving it a try. In my mind I was figuring they'd got enough complaints to fix everything that plagued the first remake. When I tried it I couldn't believe they just made it even worse. Adding a double jump is just ridiculous. The whole concept was that Abe was just an average weakling. They took out the excitement that made the heart rush followed by maniacal laughter when something hunted you down. It's sad. This was one of my favorite game series back in the '90s. Revisiting it in the early 2000s was soo exciting. Munch's Oddysee was a bit of a stain on the series but I felt they were just trying something new. Stranger's Wrath was another experiment, I felt so again, didn't feel I could fault them, just ignore their existence after the first playthrough. Now, though, doing such injustice with the main series, I don't think I will even acknowledge another release. This franchise is dead which sadly I don't feel it will ever redeem itself.
Well New n Tasty is pretty much a 1:1 remake. Idk what's your problem with it... Some people obviously just want to spread negativity in any comment section even though they have no point at all...
I'm sorry but you got to take into consideration of the situation in which Abe's family and alien species is in being as they're all in servitude to the gluckens and it was probably a slave mining quarry that you are in so in that situation yes it should be blocky instead of just taking the whole route of I didn't like how it looked it's too plain and drab that sets the tone of what the game is and that not everything's bright and colorful and sparkly as soon as you start playing
