The first U.S. Medal of Honor of WW1 was awarded to Thomas A Pope for his bravery at the Battle of Hamel on July 4th 1918. He fought under the command of the Australian general Sir John Monash, the first time American troops fought under a foreign general since the Revolutionary War.
