@@cioran1754 I'm not Thomas but I've been shooting for several years now and can tell you the number one rookie mistake is picking too high a draw weight when starting out. Everyone looks at local hunting laws and says "oh I need a 40-50+ pound bow so I'll just get that". They never develop good form, can never hit the target, can never shoot a whole day at the range. Research what ILF is. Get a modular bow that can grow with your skill level. Start BELOW 30lbs. I'm 6' 200lbs and my preference is around 35-40lbs after several years and many bows. Can I shoot heavier? Of course. Is it fun? Not really. Many friends have gotten into it with me, the ones who follow this advice are still at it. The ones who think they're Rambo never end up actually there on range day 😂 🏹 🎯

Thomas I’d like to suggest adding rotator cuff exercises with resistance bands. Really helped me, had shoulder issues for a while - used to shoot 40lbs when I was a bit younger

I have been using Turkish horse bows and Korean bows because of the speed and accuracy using traditional thumb draw shooting right thumb off of left thumb knuckle from the right side works great when hunting from tree stand or other structure obstacles. You should give it a try, I made my thumb ring from a cow hoof dog chew toy just an idea.

Two strength things that are important. Draw weight (pull with your back muscles...so probably rows and pullups). And "mass weight"...because you need to hold the mass of the bow out while your arm is extended (shoulders...probably anything in the KB press family and anything clubs). But more than that, archery is about training your shot to be exactly the same every time. So lots of reps shooting. Try checking out Jake Kaminski's channel. He's a former US Olympian (2x silver medalist). I watched his stuff when I was learning to shoot a recurve. It's really, really fun IMO.

It's better to loop both ends of the string around the bow, secure the bottom loop into the nock, step through and slide the upper one UP into the string nock.

when we were kids my brother and I had fiberglass bows, we spent hours in the pasture launching arrow(s) into the air you'll get points for running under the arrow and throw the bow down so the arrow lands in the bow, LOL, Kids

If you are planning to do thumb draw, you will need much longer arrows. My Olympic style draw is about 26", but thumb draw is ~31". And i think you are way bigger than me. Of course I am drawing up to my ear with thumb. If you are interested in Chinese style thumb draw (from ground) then I would whole heartedly recommend reading book The Way of Archery. It is awesome.

Mark, is your old horse bow from a company with the initials FD from central Europe? I have a similar (?same) bow and it is a fibreglass bow usually only suitable for cosplay rather than serious archery. The main problem is that the heavy wooden siyahs, although looking great, divert too much energy away from propelling the arrow. Anyway, greetings from an exiled Englishman living in New Zealand. Using the old step through method wit a recurve can and will twist the limbs ruining the bow. Stringers are very inexpensive and easy to use.

Pvc gets very brittle in the cold. I made a hobby of making pvc bows for a while. I got really good at it and discovered this much to my dismay a few times. If you like your bow, just avoid drawing it in the cold.

you can't treat pvc with anything not to make it brittle these bows are toys they will not last. Save your money and buy a real bow or make your own PVC bow for fun.

You made me discover an interesting bow and bowyer, many thanks. ...But as far as I know your preferred shooting style is - though indeed traditional - but generally not referred to as “American”, rather as “Mediterranean” or “English”, as the oldest sources mentioning this style originate from this regions. As “Traditional American” style people mostly mention that one also called as “Pinch Method”.

The one used and promoted by Fred Bear is first mentioned in ancient Roman manuscripts, referring to lost ancient Greek sources, describing it as the style of the Archers of the Mediterranean islands. Later in Medieval times the French described the same as the style of the English longbowmen, and in most historical and/or traditional archer communities this is nowadays mostly referred under this two denomination (i.e. as Mediterranean or English /“instinctive”/ style), mostly rather the first (though Mr. Bear preferred the second). “American” style refers to the “finger pinch” method as this was (and still is) the one traditionally mostly used by native Americans.

I am unfamiliar with an "American" draw. What you are describing as an "American" draw resembles what I have understood to be the Mediterranean draw. Three finger draw with the arrow on the inside shelf is the Mediterranean draw. Indigenous Americans, whom would be more properly modeled for the "American" draw use a pinch draw. With lower poundage bows (the weren't into composites or long bows), they would pinch the arrow at the knock between the thumb and the forefinger. As far as I know, most people do not shoot this was anymore. Oriental/Asiatic draws are typically traditionally thumb draws, where one wears a thumb ring made of stone or leather and fires the arrow from the outside edge of the bow. These, I believe, are typically called thumb releases or draws.

Go light. I find the short length of the bow requires an adaptation. They are so affordable that you could by a 35, 45, and 55 for half the cost of any stick bow at cabelas
