After just 7 solo wild camps the OEX Tacana Cook Set from Go Outdoors failed me. If you would like to support my channel then why not buy me a Coffee! www.buymeacoff...
Hi. I’ve had the same issue. Simple fix: Having the Piezo too close wouldn’t ignite the gas. Move the piezo away from the burner by some 3-5mm - but be gentle as you wouldn’t want to bend to far and snap it off. It might’ve been a slight flaw when it was manufactured. Hopefully it should work for you.
I have used mine for the last three weekends in succession for camping trips. The ignition system has not failed but I always carry at least one lighter too. I did call into Go Outdoors for more gas and noted they were both on offer and sold out! I'm still happy with mine as a budget alternative to a Jetboil and have used it recently in preference to my Trangia and Biolite stoves.
Honestly, set aside for burners that cost 50£ alone, I'm not expecting the piezo to work for too long. I would actually expect to be the first thing to fail. The point is: is the whole thing still be usable if I ignite with a lighter? I make it more clear, because the answer is almost surely "yes". Can I still put the pot on top, and be able to ignite? (or do I have to ignite and THEN put the pot on?)
Love your honesty. My Trekology ul80 matt failed on me in Dartmoor on a paid wildcampsite after 4 uses. Which I put inside my army issue bivvy bag. Drove to Plymouth to get a air mattress and footpump to replace it . Otherwise I would of packed up and gone home . But you don't know a product unless you use it. My MSR pocket rocket has lasted me years. And trangia which I use for my MRE meals saving on gas . Thanx buddy take care .
My Trekology UL80 is still ok at the moment although it does deflate a little during the night. I have been looking at the MSR pocket rocket to use on gas canisters. Good to know that they are quality buddy and thanks for the feedback. Take care pal.
Hi Mark sorry the OEX failed you I got the APG 1400ml and it's outstanding had it ages and the built in lighter still working strong only paid £30 ebay its awesome.
If the spark is dull is the exposed end at the burner clean and free of soot/grease? Is it close enough to the burner head? The bigger the gap the less it will manage to spark.
First time I used mine whilst camping the ignitor had bent upwards when I pulled the gas cannister out, managed to see this was the issue as had time to inspect. But it could never easily overlooked as only has to move 5mm and it won't ignite...
@@JackalOutdoors It seems to be a common failure point on a lot of these stoves. I find it odd since I've had umpteen hundred of cheap lighters that have never seemed to fail that way.
What gas canister do people use? I have a Colman 230g and the dome underneath hits the piezo and stops it going fully down so I cannot secure the top lid wire catch.
Odd not seeing you in a tent lol. Wow!! You have a bar in your house, nice. Thanks for the review. £100 is a lot for a jet boil, I'm having fun with a £10 alcohol stove, it does the job eventually and I find it fun to use, always have gas on backup though.
The piezo lighters always fail no matter what the quality of the product is. When you use it again, don’t turn the gas up too much and you may find the spark will ignite it. It’s the force which the gas comes out at overcomes the strength of the spark. I’ve never had a burner where the piezo ignition lasted very long even on the Jetboil they fail.👍
I use a trangia stove which has not failed me in 41 years of wild camping usage .It`s lightweight , it contains two cooking pots with a lid which can be used as a plate , also a frying pan and a kettle .It has no moving parts to fail on you and everything fits inside the pots with the frying pan fitting over the pots to contain it all in one compact unit.Everything you need all in one place.
Shame about the igniter but the cook set looks great. Maybe worth keeping just for that. I've heard many adventurers comment on failed gear and it's just not a good time to find out your gear is coming up short. Testing it out at home wont give you a proper test either. Maybe you can just use a lighter with it but that's the whole point here isn't it. They should improve on the igniter.
I also have the OEX Tacana Cook set and the igniter failed on only the second camp!!! Very poor... Fortunately I had a lighter and to be honest I would never rely solely on a Piezo igniter... All that aside I do like the cook set and will continue using with a lighter... Also worth noting many stoves don't actually come with an igniter so not that much of a disappointment to my mind.
I got one a few months ago myself wasn’t impressed with it. The cheap £20 one I bought from Amazon over a year ago is better packs away smaller and fits a bigger gas can in it
@@JackalOutdoors that's good,so for half price you can get a similar result. I've been considering a fast boil kettle, which is even cheaper,if you have a stove.
