Eau de Toilette is a diluted perfume. It's a generic term. I once bought one by mistake from a reputed brand.

Eau de Toilette is what many call today "cologne", a weaker fragrance perfume, although eau de cologne, toilette and perfume have different concentration of perfume. But it's easier to just use cologne for all the weak concentrations.

I can confirm this, though I can see how it seems weird for people who aren't used to French. I didn't question it myself until today, because context always makes it clear what kind of "toilette" you're talking about.

@@Justakatto eau de toilette is like 5-15% concentration. Eau de parfum is 15-20% and parfum is 20-30%... Since eau de parfum is only 5% range, you should see a lot of Eau de toilette and Parfum instead. And no, there's a reason why it's called eau de toilette but it's regular parfum, just the concentration is less than eau de parfum or parfum. Extra fact: eau de Cologne is 2-4%.

My immediate thought process was that the "toilet" here is used synonymously as "wash room" and the "water" here means something like "refresher" so basically "toilet water" is something you carry to the washroom to quickly freshen yourself up in a pinch?
