Off center, high eye appeal.

Here are my thoughts on eye appeal. I like centered cards, but generally think it’s over emphasized in discussions of eye appeal. So here are some cards I consider high eye appeal that are off center. Featuring Duke Snider, Zack Wheat, Yogi Berra, Don Drysdale, and Ted Williams. #vintagebaseballcards #sportscards #baseball cards #vintagecards

I like your broad definition of eye appeal. There are as many interpretations of that term as there are collectors, and you acknowledge that. The Williams is a stunner, especially for card 1. In that vein, the Snider is a toughie with grading, being the last card in the set.

Great cards Mark! I agree with you 100 percent. Centering tends to be hyper focused in the hobby and a clean off centered card does not bother me.

Hi Mark I agree with you on eye appeal, first for me is registration then centering and condition. Cards back in the day were not always perfectly cut and centered that is just how they came in the pack!

Yeah- the cards you just showed are perfect example of this!

Hey Mark…I agree with you, we all have our criteria for cards. My first criteria is definitely registration. After that it’s centering and overall condition. After being back in the hobby for 6 years now not only has my focus changed multiple times but also my criteria for the condition of my cards. I’ve also learned that the overall condition can sometimes be relative to the grade. It’s all a learning process, but it sounds like you know what your priorities are.

Great video Mark!!! couldn't agree more with your thoughts on eye appeal. You touched upon many different factors giving eye appeal to a card... one factor You mentioned that's underrated I believe is color, sometimes cards can be somewhat faded maybe not stored properly, You're not always sure how the previous owner has stored it or cared for the card (Even if they're in a slab)... I always look at color along with all the other specific details you mentioned. health and happiness to you .see you in Cleveland my friend... Jonathan..aka ...the Boston kid

Yup - color is a big thing. Especially for me on cards like the 58s and 59s that have such vibrant colors. You can really notice fading. See ya in Cleveland!

Mark, As our friend lou rok says OC cards need love to. Those are all Beautiful cards indeed. I dont think anyone would actually put centering above the image quality. Some of us or me I should say want both a perfectly centered card with a perfect image. Good images on cards are relatively easy to come by most cards have good images where as centering is extremely difficult to find with a good image. I myself have quite a few OC cards that I wont part with because of the pack fresh look and the fact that they are big cards that I dont want to even attempt to replace them😅. As us collectors always say beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😊. I also agree OC cards are getting less and less expensive so there a great way to add amazing cards to a collection. I used to hunt down PSA 8 oc cards because they are extremely hated by people and I loved how cheap they are. Obviously I have changed my opinion on those but if I still collected OC cards those are hands down the greatest deals out there. Thanks Mark for sharing your thoughts I loved this 👊🤙🤙

Thanks for checking out my video and sharing your view. I guess I just hear a ton about centering and not as much about the other things in general. I also think it’s kinda hard to find really nice surface and registration. For example, I looked at eBay for Ted Williams 1958 cards in a 5 yesterday and a bunch of them have minor registration or surface issues I’d find more annoying. But as you say, to each their own and beauty is in eye of the beholder! I love a good centered card but I also like crisp corners and edges, etc. At least to me centering isn’t quite as important. Thanks for your comment and love your channel.

Nice share. Love some off centered cards. They personally do not bother me when they are OC. I know it really bothers some people. Enjoyed.

Nice one Mark. All fabulous cards. Eye appeal. I'm the same way. Can be o/c & can have sharp corners & coloring for me. Building my 66T set, notorious for being o/c but as long as the card has eye appeal for me it's ok. My latest video I bought a Tony Conigliaro o/c but ok to me. Take care!

Mark, I am 100% on board with your perspective. The card came from the pack that way. Some can be so bad that it is distracting, but for most, it is fine. This is a topic I was working on, too, so you will have some additional online support soon 😀

I agree with you, Mark. At this point in my collecting, I just want to enjoy the card. Off-center, soft corners, even small surface blemishes don't bother me at all. Cheers!

Collect what you like , Mark. And thanks for sharing your view points. The Zack Wheat is so clear. I used to let it bother me, but I have some really off center cards from way back in my early collecting days that I thought about letting go. but glad i didn’t. Because they all have a story and have been there with me in some tough times. Part of my history. Do I look for more centered cards now? Yes. But it isn’t always the necessary factor now. The story is more important. Mookie Chilson is a great channel. He features a lot of pinhole cards. They all have some great story from the past. Take care. Hope to see you at the National!

Like # Pele.. Hi Mark- first time viewer and subscriber! I like your take/ beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for sure. Perfect is the enemy of the good- like you said, most people don’t have an unlimited budget- so, this is a great way to afford desirable cards with great eye appeal! Thanks for sharing and Good Collecting 👍❤️

Great points I agree with your definition Do you think some cards should be rated as 5.25 or 5.5 or even 5.75? That yogi card looks like a 6!

Thanks! They already have .5 grades but I don’t think they’ll go to quarter points. Too precise. My $.02.
