If you ever need to you can mess about with the temperature probe and turn your chest freezer into a chest fridge . A chest design will always be more efficient as the cold air does not fall out when you open the lid.
Dude everything you're doing is 100% And you'll learn as you go by your own doings of what you need to increase and what you don't need to increase but you're doing an awesome job
That Minnesota sun angle drops really low in winter and your tree line might still filter too much light, so I vote you sink two sturdy log poles and build an adjustable tilt table to contain and suspend your solar panels. This tray would pivot on a single axle and could be mounted 10' feet above ground to maximize your sun exposure. Clearing snow from the panels would be quick too!
For a young couple you guys surely have your priorities set out...it’s so refreshing to see a young couple not interested in the city rat race living a pretentious lifestyle of materialistic possessions over a quality of living a wholesome life...it’s what the world needs more of life is now judge on how much money you have what car you drive when you die none of that maters and you can’t bring it to the afterlife...life should be judge on how well you lived by the earth environment and fellow humans has so much more value than how much much you had and so on...hats off to you guys I wish you all the happiness and fortune in the world you truly deserve it... huge fan of your beautiful channel bravo guys
@@markdavert3063 my comment wasn’t saying that all people are materialistic by all means educate yourself to the highest of your abilities for prospect of a rewarding well paid job..an alternative lifestyle can be just as rewarding and financially rewarding as well it’s what you make of your choices in life...
I wonder if there's a way to pitch the roof of the porch you intend to build in a way to accommodate the solar panels being mounted to it ?? Idk. ,,, that may be too ugly of a look. Just a thought.
I was thinking about that also. It would get them higher from the shade of the trees. Plus if you get creative with the mounting them on the porch roof, you could change the angle and pitch of the panels as needed.
Take down the trees as needed. Understory regrowth will be vigorous so no existential guilt. Look at the big picture, i.e., your low carbon footprint with solar. Besides you'll use the wood in fireplace. Transplant the conifers in October. If you have chicken wire left over, form 4 foot diameter compost pile bins (cut and wire ends together). I'd buy a bunch of those water proof solar camping lamps, charge them in the sun daily, hang them on posts around cabin. No mullet, please! Just have Cierra cut it, save $15-20 per.
Go for it. It's your hair. People comment I should cut the top of mine off. But I'm not going to because it's my hair. So you do you. Live life to the fullest.
You, Cierra, and Skeeter of course , are doing a great job on the building of your homestead! A log work shop would be great! Cut your hair however you want to, thing about hair is ,it grows back, and in a few weeks you need a haircut again! Or don't cut it at all, personally long hair is to hot for summer , but that's just me. Great to see Skeeter! Love Skeeter!
Place kinda looks like a dump - you already got a rusty fridge on the front porch - NOT ONE single thing has been built or finished properly - trash everywhere ..... 05:18 even the NEW chest freezer has DIRT on it .... This is dissapointing ....and just to make it worse you wanna get a mullet to go with that serial killer moustache - its 2021 not 1971 .....seriously dude - you really need to clean that place up , its not fit to live in like that .
@mark layton. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I guess my issue is with the water supply system which seems like a temporary solution to the need of a homestead. If the property is going to be used as a homestead a permanent solution like a groundwater well or a municipal connection to the nearest town is needed. The collection of rainwater is not going to be enough for consumption or supply the garden. Also, it seems like the focus has been on saving money and building for cheap instead of looking at long term solutions to accommodate the homestead. However, at the end of day Kyle and Cierra are the ones who must live in this environment. Besides only time will tell who is right or wrong about the build. I wish them well. Straight talk.
My husband (75) and I (70) watch all your videos. We think you are doing an awesome job on your house! Foxy our Solar Panels I was wondering if you could make a stand with some kind of adjustable swivel (think of a teeter-totter), then you could move the panels as the sun moves. Just a thought. Also, are you going to make a Saw Buck to process your firewood? I’ve been watching videos on how to make and use those and it looks like it would really speed up the woodcutting process. Again you are doing great, keep it up. Look forward to all videos and we are definitely Subscribed!
We had a possum problem with our chicken coop. I ended up making some 6" deep concrete footers all around the bottom of the wire to keep them from digging under.
As its a 24v system, he could use the full sized ones, and probably better going for bifacials for winter production on that snow. Your standard commercial panel, the early ones are cheap as only approx 180-250w output. I bought 2nd hand and am still getting 105% of stated output from 10 year old panels
I suggest a buzz cut. Guys look best with short hair. Yes, add more solar panels. You will be glad if you do. Yes, protect those chickens. And be careful at night! House is looking good.
Kyle it takes more power and makes the freezer work harder when it is less full. Even though you may not need it, fill your freezer with gallons of water to fill the empty space. As you fill the freezer with food,, take the gallons out., using a lot less power, extending your battery life.
Why don't you raise the solar panels off the ground?? I have seen them raised, on a pole, on a roof but I don't ever remember seeing them on the ground. ✌
I say no to the Mullett haircut, but that's just me. A small structure that will keep the solar panels about 4 feet off the ground will protect from animals, snow and wind. Because of the position of the sun, a structure that allows 6 to 10 degrees of movement will allow you to follow the sun better all year.
Mullet is great. Determine best angle by placing a beer can on panel surface and adjust for minimum vertical shadow. You will have to adjust seasonally! 🤪. Mount panels above the snow line. Don’t mount on roof.
Solar working for you. That’s great! Smart to use the old building for firewood storage and storage for drying your logs and milled dimensional number for drying. Log cabin workshop with wood burning stove will be a plus. Shawn James of My Self Reliance channel built one at his new property…if you have not seen it, take a look. If you want a mullet, do it! 😎👍
I think you need to make a frame and get your solar panels up off the ground. When you get snow it will start to cover your panels from the ground up. Brilliant cabin though. X
You're doing a great job with the build, don't ruin it with a mullet...lol Haha. I think a log cabin workshop would be awesome, remember to finish one project before proceeding with another though.
The mullet might make looking at that stash a little easier... hahahaha. Just kidding! I would say cut the hair... nobody needs another mullet. I just purchased my batteries for my solar setup at my cabin. 2x6V deep cycles. Going to hook up a 200W Renogy solar system to start and add-on from there. Can't wait!
Place is looking good kid.. coming along nicely. You remind me of a younger " Boss of the swamp " 🙂.. hard no on the mullet. And trim that flavor savor..lol. be safe kid!
I have a remarkably similar freezer out in the garage (unconditioned space), and I put a kill-a-watt on it. In the winter it used 240 watts a day, and in the summer it uses 480 watts. I also got an Icebird Beer Fridge external thermostat for it, so I could dial it up to being a fridge if I want or need to.
I previously mentioned those aluminum adjustable brackets (Lowe's, Amazon) to hold your 100 watt solar panels. So then, adjusting the sun declination is easy. I guess you could build a wooden rack to say hold two of those solar panels and brackets. Mount that on some sort of bottom nice and solid. Then put a four inch diameter pole solidly in the ground (perhaps cement it) and then come up with a swivel mechanism for the top of the post. That swivel then attaches to your twin solar panel bracket construction above. So then you can swivel to the direction of the sun, a couple of times during the day.
OK, Ray did a little snooping. I couldn't find anything other than the tilt angle adjustable brackets for sun declination. I mean something that could be used to make a swivel base underneath your solar power panel rack. So then you can easily rotate your rack towards the movement of the sun across the sky! I'm pretty sure you could use a "bar stool swivel" that will allow you to mount on to a solid bottom plate (6" x 6" x1" pressure treated wood) that you have mounted on, say, a 4 ft tall post. Then attach the upper plate of the metal barstool swivel to the bottom of your solar panel rack. Boom.
Kyle, I noticed that you have lots of fern near the chicken coop. Chickens love them, so maybe you can throw some in there.....also I use to feed my chickens most of my scraps from the kitchen.
No crazy hair cut. Just shorten the hair length. Btw have you given any thought about a fire line around the cabin. You should clear more tree around the house to get a better view of what happening. Also I would build a fire wood shed first to store the 🔥 fire wood. In addiction to the chicken coop wire. You should dig down where the wire is bury and cement that area all around the coop. That will help prevent the pry from burrowing under. Lastly... Try to inclose the deck before winter. That can be use as a temporary work area until spring 2022. What about an heated outhouse?
Aspen is decent wood to burn, but it needs to be split. It'll hold moisture otherwise and get punky. Not an all night wood, but good enough to burn while you're there to feed the fire. The skirting around the cabin should be done asap. You don't want skunks under the cabin, or your front porch. Ask me why I know. Lol You have been moving right along on your new place Kyle. It's looking nice and cozy. I used to sport a mullet when I was your age. Now I just use a 1/2" guard on the clippers. Saves on combs! Haha thanks for sharing Kyle.
Cold PBR and a self hair cut, PERFECT. LOL. We really like your life and skills. Live one day at a time and never take for granted this special time. 🌸
Might want to raise those panels up at least 3-4 feet before it starts snowing. Make a way to change the angle occasionally throughout the day to follow the sun.
Mabye get a couple of "inexpenisve" trail cams, the kind that uses SD chips instead of wireless to your phones to keep track of the wildlife close to your cabin.
Hey guys. Hello from Michigan. I've been watching since the beginning and you've come such a long way in a short time. You have done great. I run all LED bulbs through my house for the wattage and my T.V. is also. noticed that big bulb in your new light outside. Is it LED? will save you lots of watts to spend a little on those and they last for years. A little slow to come on below 0 sometimes but they work. I'm anxious to follow your progress and great job on the vids and thanks for sharing.
Are you going to build a roof over the porch before winter comes. Just get your hair trimmed, maybe let your wife decide on how you should have it cut.
