OFF-GRID camping, what do you really need? What we bring on our OFF-GRID trips. 

What you really need depends on how old you are. back when I was 20 I could go camping with a foam esky with ice, a 2 man tent and a sleeping bag. Today I need a home on wheels with air conditioning and the works LOL Love the camping spot there, can't get much better than that. The message about putting fires out properly can't be said often enough. We pulled up at a fairly remote lake and parked next to the water and there was a small spot on the ground where someone had lit a fire. Just looked like cold ashes. There was no smoke or anything coming from it so most people would assume it was out. Just to be safe I made sure the tyres didn't go over it but it would have been easy enough just to park right on top of it considering where it was. As soon as I checked it I found there were red hot coals still glowing and this was LITERALLY 3 metres from the edge of a huge lake. No excuse at all for leaving it like that. If someone had parked on it then they would have lost a tyre at the very least and might have lost an entire rig. If a kid had walked on it they would have had severe burns. Everyone needs to learn to put fires out with water, lots of it.

Great advice buddy. What freaks me out is these idiots that take a dump in the sticks and can’t be arsed to dig a hole to keep our bush looking as we found it. NOPE! Let’s just pollute the crap out of it then get pissed off when parks fence it or shut us out.

Moreton and Straddie should have a solid fire pit rule. No ground fires allowed

You can never have too much light. So sounds like you had plenty. On beach trips I pack an extra tent pole, a double guy rope and a doubled length of rope to attach to two existing poles to make a very large clothes line for all the towels and swimmers. It's very efficient. Thanks for the video.

Hi Adam. Another informative and helpful video. I've actually just come back from a five day trip on Moreton Is with my family (missus and two small kids) and stayed at an offgrid site just up a bit further from Ben Ewa campground. It was the very first offgrid trip since we bought our vehicle and caravan both of which I have customised from standard specifically for offgrid touring. My caravan is a 15ft offroad hybrid which has all the creature comforts including aircon able to run (for a few hours) off the 3 x 120x iTechworld LiFePo4 batteries (and iTechworld 3000W inverter) ... for the benefit of the kids should they need it ; ). As far as I could tell, I think we were the only ones that had a caravan on the island when we were there but the trusty Prado towed it without any problem at all and I never even looked like getting bogged the whole time including driving high up on the beach not long after high tide. One thing I found was that my 200L water tank in the caravan required topping up almost daily (kids showering) despite being as frugal as possible during showers (wet, lather, rinse). The tap water available at Ben Ewa is relatively clear whilst the water from Comboyuro Campground is a tiny bit brown (from the tea trees) but I do understand there is no issue with either (for showering) ... the missus was just a little worried for the kids sake. Happy to say that I was able to harvest some of the rainwater coming off the awning and feed that back into the caravan water tank. Weight permitting, I plan to eventually get myself a good sized water bladder to put in the rear passenger footwell of the car. What toilet system do you have in your camper? I have the standard Thetford system in the caravan but I'd really like to swap it out for a composting toilet one day. Despite the expense, I believe they are worth it from an environmental point alone. Your thoughts? Also, how do you find the 'home schooling' option for your kids. This is one of the main issues burning in the back of my mind with my own kids as far as hitting the road for an extended period of time. My eldest is currently only in Prep so her 'formal' schooling will start next year. I've been following your travels for a while now and appreciate your approach to things. I have to admit that I haven't exactly adopted a similar minimalistic approach to yourself but you have inspired me to get out there and experience this stunning country we live in with my family. Your videos demonstrate how little you actually need to travel the country as a family and take in all the wonderful experiences and sights. I look forward to your future travels and travel tips. 👍

Guys love the channel but more importantly I love the NO BS. Great to see a family focus on their kids and getting out there into the beautiful country. We were contemplating Moreton and had been told (as you said yourself) there are some really smelly spots! We, like you, have respect for the beautiful country we live in and leave no evidence we were there except for it being cleaner. Is the Western side the "better" side for this do you think? If thats a kings mppt controller, ditch it before it fries your battery and get a quality one or ctek.

Hi mate, in regards to your 30 year old vehicle, it would be great to know what it's cost you while you've owned it and the number of years you've had it. While you say it is inexpensive, if you can get the lending, with my old cars I've found the repairs more than annual interest on a new car. And you are also forgoing the utility value of a new car being nicer, safer, more mod cons etc

I am not sure I understand "off the grid"..you are not off the grid. You are car camping on an island.

Off grid camping/ living comes down to living with nature. All else is drama for likes and follows for the clueless.
