In this video me and sam make some widow frames for the top workshop. there are four frames in total. they all have to follow the curve in the walls. We made them out of larch that was milled on my homemade bandsaw mill.

the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ru-vid.comUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Sketch up is good for planning. I can use it and I’m almost illiterate when it comes to computers. It’s useful because you can draw to the full dimension and easily work out the kinks. I had to make models like yours during my joinery apprenticeship. Keep up the great work you’ve been an inspiration to my own small holding adventure in Wales. Particularly the tree planting.

I live in a city, not much money to do anything, not that many opportunities to do things outside, with wood or in a workshop, so your channel is a little escape from the concrete world back to the fields, woods and to the workshop. I hope the rebar on that concrete arch will be enough to handle the tensile forces on the bottom, and the arch shape will also help somewhat to distribute load-but FYI generally with a load supporting spanning beam like that you want the cross section to be taller than it is wide, because it will have a higher moment of inertia, and this will lessen the beams deflection along its span. For example, a 2x12 vertical cross section beam versus a 12x2 beam with a flat/horizontal cross section has 36 times the moment of inertia, and therefore also has 36 times less deflection, since beam deflection and moment inertia of the beam are inversely related. (I am an architect with structural engineering training).
@KrisHarbour
@KrisHarbour 3 года назад
Yeah I understand that. But the load in it is really small. Just about 200kg or maybe even less. It’s really only holding itself and one roof timber so it dose not need to be that strong. The arch will be the main strength of it
@AvanaVana
@AvanaVana 3 года назад
@@KrisHarbour ok that’s good. Have you factored in snow load in the winter? That’s the only other thing I’d think about.
@KrisHarbour
@KrisHarbour 3 года назад
I have indeed. You will see when the roof starts going up what I mean. There is only about 2m of roof because the wall curves inwards and there is a frame in the middle there is very little weight at that point.

Kris, I just came across a few lines from Horace (ancient Roman author, much esteemed for over 2000 years) that describe the contentment of someone just like you: "This is what I prayed for: A piece of land - not so very big, with a garden and, near the house, a spring that never fails, with a bit of wood to round it off. All this and more the gods have granted. So be it. I ask for nothing else." The wealthy among the Romans were famous for longing to get back to their bit of land with a garden, away from the clamour of the city....So, if anyone says you're crazy, you can cite Horace to your defense! Hard to go wrong with Horace!

As you were about to set the arched top window I was telling you it was inside out. I only noticed because I was at first confused about the other ones beside it until I remembered that wall curves into the upper shop. The 3 windows together will look amazing. It appears that the arch top curves down perfectly for the angled ends of the other 2 windows.

@pukesmells

Lead is pretty environmentally friendly, half of all production is from recycled lead and most mined lead is a by product of mining for other materials. As long as nobody is licking flashing I think they'll be reet.

I've been watching for a while now, and I applaud your off grid life style. Something that I fantasize about myself to be honest, but I have to ask: how much do you rely on patreon and RU-vid advertising to support yourself? There are many "self reliant" types on RU-vid, but if it weren't for RU-vid would you be anywhere near where you are now? I don't mean to be negative, it's just something I'm curious about. The amout of projects you do and the material/tools you use makes it hard to believe you're totally self reliant. How do you afford these things? And can you preach self reliance/self suffience when you do in fact have a job with an income (RU-vid and patreon through RU-vid)???

@Kris Harbour Natural Building Hey Kris, when you get around to putting your wind turbine up I was wondering if you ever thought of making a cone shaped 5 blade vertical axis wind turbine & buying yourself a MPPT Wind Turbine Charge Controller which cuts off the power when it reaches a certain voltage. You could easily find a couple of 6m lengths of 150mm dia PVC pipe enough to make 5x half (C Shaped) strips of 3m long & put them in the shape of a spiral cone off the ground on that large pole you have there. If you make it 1.326m wide dia x 2.598m high with 3m lengths of half tubing for blades at 50 km/hr or 31 MPH it should produce 1500w @ 1200 RPM. This is the design that I'm doing here. Your wood horizontal 3 blade turbine worked well for a little while but during high wind it's always going to explode unless you fibreglass over the wood & have each blade perfectly balanced. With the curved pipe you pretty much can't go wrong if you mark it up first & cut perfectly on the lines, perhaps using your bandsaw mill on perfectly level plastic pipe that is screwed down to a solid bit of timber so that the pipe won't twist or move when you run a cut through the middle of it.
