Hi Brian. This was first video I saw pop up and just watched a few minutes of it. Had to check out your Channel and see what it was all about. Wow after almost 2 months of watching what u and Diana have done in what about 6 years of living on the island. It's amazing all the hard work it took being there. Sad that both of the dogs passed away and then u get 2 more which will live good lives there. Another thing the tractor u got was a great investment and it makes it alot easier doing things around the Homestead. Like u said in one video should of gotten one in the beginning. Wish u both the best of luck on future projects and will be watching the videos on them. Also like to say is, what wicked views from the island of the mountains in the background and the waterway going too Juneau.
@AnAlaskaHomestead
@AnAlaskaHomestead 2 года назад
Thank you Lenny. Yea it’s sad we’ve had two dogs pass out here. Luca didn’t like the island life, he preferred to stay inside but Gunner was in 7th heaven. We’ve been going at it for awhile now but things have really been speeding up lately. The tractor definitely helps. We appreciate your support Lenny. Hope you have a great week.
@lennyt-man4229
@lennyt-man4229 2 года назад
Your welcome Brian. Some dogs just prefer to stay inside and some rather be outside enjoying the sights and sounds that surround them. The 2 new pups sure enjoy themselves being outside like Gunner did on the island. Good to hear that things are moving along on the Homestead. Have about 6 videos left to watch and then all caught up on the channel. Have yourself a great week there also.

@@AnAlaskaHomestead back in the early 90's my mother and father in law traveled to Alaska with their RV, my father in law went out on a chartered fishing trip to catch Halibut, his limit was 2 fish and they were HUGE, Well, the price of the trip included the fish being processed and shipped back home (WV) over night, of course my husband and I intercepted them and put them straight into the inlaws freezer for when they returned home, now, my mother in law was a fabulous cook and she fixed that Halibut many times and it was always to perfection!! I would also love to learn some of the recipes the Alaskans use to cook fish. I want to do justice to the fish when I cook it. They all taste best when fried with a cornmeal and flour dredge. I haven't been fishing since my husband passed and really miss it. I cook my cod in butter, lemon, capers, and a little white wine or I will dip it in flour, egg, and panko crumbs before frying it. All our fish at the stores are frozen. Halibut and flounder are very expensive here. Hope to see your recipe soon.

I'm going on an Alaskan cruise. No one seems to have an answer to this question and I'm wondering if you know. Are there excursions that take people halibut fishing for the day? Where you can have it frozen and shipped to you? Halibut is my favorite fish! I just love it! Reeling those fish like that is really hard work! I caught a marlin in Mexico and the goofy fish dove on me three times! I don't know what the belt thing is that you're talking about. I mean I don't know what it's called. I know what you're talking about. When I went Marlin fishing as soon as one of the crew realized I had hooked a Marlin. He literally picked me up and threw me into this chair with an arm that came over the front and locked me into the chair so the Marlin couldn't pull me off the boat. It took me over an hour and a half to get that fish in the boat! I thought my arms were going to break off. I was covered in sweat. I mean I was soaked down to every piece of clothing I had on. But it was the best time! We had friends down there with a boat. So when we got up at 3:00 a.m., all the men at the hotel we're waiting for their charters to pick them up and take them out. They had paid thousands of dollars to go out Marlin fishing. We all decided to meet up at the end of the day at a local restaurant and whoever didn't catch a fish had to buy dinner and drinks for those who did. This little 5'2 110 lb girl was the only one who caught a marlin! And I lorded it over them for the rest of the week! Good for you. Get that halibut! Oh and great dogs!
@AnAlaskaHomestead
@AnAlaskaHomestead Год назад
Man that’s an amazing story. Obviously you didn’t get stuck with the tab😂 They have several charter fishing companies in Juneau and other towns. I’d also check out Hoonah if your cruise is going to that destination. They may have better halibut spots there. The charting company should be able to process the fish and mail it to you. Good luck and hope you enjoy your cruise.

Better eating, better life. All natural foods right there. I'll be in Haines hopefully next year, fishing for Halibut and salmon. That depends on Canada opening the border to us unvaccinated.

Halibut is our favorite fish to eat, salmon is fun to reel in. Good luck on your trip.

Just a recommendation but those older Penn Senators have super slow retrieves. Very, very slow. You could spend $30-40 to buy something like a used Penn GTI or a Daiwa Sealine that are super reliable and significantly faster retrieves. I doubt you'd want to but there are more expensive reels, like $150-$200 that would last 50 years and would make you much more efficient too.
@JeffSmith-eq3kc
@JeffSmith-eq3kc 2 года назад
The other thought you may really enjoy is buying reels people don't want to or don't know how to fix. Recently I spent $29 on a used Daiwa Saltist. It had some issues, but $13 in parts and a little know how and I have a $250 reel, with brand new gearing, for $42. Essentially a brand new reel with some aesthetic issues for. I like in Florida so tons of reels around here but I'm sure Alaska is similar given the amount of fishing going on!
@AnAlaskaHomestead

That’s great. Those old Penns are my father in laws. 40 years old but still going strong. I use a Penn international on a Lamiglas Kwik rod and love it.

Although you seem to have fun wouldn't it be more efficient to use long lines hauled behind the boat to get maximum efficiency for fish collection for winter use? Individual fishing seems hard work for so few captured, I a not sure of course if your allowed to do so by local laws.

As usual a great video. I have a question though closed captioning wasn’t available as it usually is what determines if there is closed captions? Being hearing impaired it helps me. I still enjoyed the video immensely. Another question what is your favorite way to prepare halibut? Love mine battered and fried.

Bill your the second person that said cc was not on. I have it turned on for the channel so I’m not sure why it wasn’t working this time. I love mine the same way. Although we just prepared it a different way and it took a close second place. We will do a video on it.

The Upper and Lower Yukon rivers are in crisis. No subsistence salmon fishing for Yup'ik/Cup'ik/Athabascan communities! While trawlers are free to decimate salmon and halibut by the tons!

Perhaps it’s been over fished there. King crab and king salmon have been over fished here. You have to let them repopulate.
