This was such a special experience for our little family. What was your favorite part of our houseboat camping adventure? If we were to do this again, what would you like to see more of next time? Let us know in the comments! 👇
@@TennesseeHomesteadUSA Thank you for the comment. We have a water filter at the dock and only fill our tanks with fresh filtered water. Taking water from the lake isn’t something our boat is a capable of doing.
@@TennesseeHomesteadUSA This is a very interesting concept - not something we have considered doing just yet because we're never away from our marina for more than a handful of days at a time. This could be very helpful for houseboaters who go long distances on a river over the course of several weeks. Definitely piquing our interest, though!
I realize I'm late with this but I only just now saw the vid. I have seen numerous tours of various houseboats but no one has ever gone out on a cruise and explained what was needed to be done before leaving port. Thank you.
I am so genuinely jealous rn! & Im not mad about it! Y'all are living THE life! Living the dream & here I am still dreaming of life! Looks like that little girl is going to grow up having some really special experiences!
Hi William, thank you for watching our video! We love that our experience brought back such fond memories for you. We hope to have those same kinds of memories when our daughter, Clare, is older. Lake Cumberland looks like such a beautiful lake for houseboating! We hope to make it up to visit that area sometime. What type of houseboat did your family use for your adventures?
Fab video just love your babies! Claire is just too cute and Dory is gorgeous. I love the way you love them both and the pup doesn’t get neglected for you’re little girl. Well done both, you’ve got it sorted. Enjoy your beautiful lives xx from the uk
Happy that you enjoyed the video, Rose! Love that you are watching us from the UK. Dory and Clare are our most precious gifts in life. We are so incredibly lucky to have them. Dory was our little baby before Clare came along, and still gets tons of love from our family. We try to make every day a great day for both Dory and Clare. It's cute to see how much Clare is taking to Dory now, and Dory to Clare...best buddies!
We love watching your videos, wishing we could join you. My husband at 92 ( Captain) still dreams of boating . Live , love, laugh as much as you breathe. Life isn’t a dress rehearsal!
Thank you so much to you and your husband for watching our videos! We love sharing our adventures with others and meeting fellow boaters. It’s been a life-changing experience for us and we are so happy we made the decision to do it. Like you said, love life now!
These were my weekends as a teen on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. 55’ ocean hulled houseboat. Miss those days tremendously. Thanks for this channel…
So glad you found our channel, and welcome!! Really cool you also grew up houseboating, and Smith Mountain Lake looks like a beautiful place to do that. Hopefully you get a chance to be on the water these days, too. Thank you for watching our video!
How could anybody downvote this video? SMH! Oh my goodness, what a lovely video, gorgeous houseboat and the cutest baby I've seen (outside of my own family, lol). Very helpful info!! Thanks for sharing it!
Thank you for watching our video! We are enjoying sharing our little family adventures with others. So far it has been fun. And we figure anyone who downvotes a video must be having a bad day and needs more boat life!
Thank you for watching and subscribing!! We have thought about solar, and even briefly looked at solar as on option for off grid camping. Would love to do it, if we can figure out a way to safely make it happen for our boat. Our houseboat was built in 2002, and adding what we'd need to power the appliances we'd want would require us to do more drilling and moving electrical parts than we are comfortable with right now. If we are ever fortunate enough to build our dream houseboat, we would want solar on top of the party top and a big battery bank in the hull (hey, a guy can dream haha). We do need to get our inverter batteries replaced, so check back sometime to see how we tackle this project...we don't even know how we are going to do that yet :)
That precious baby! This sounds great, now I have something else to strive for (a houseboat). It’s enjoyable to see how prepared and safe you guys are. I don’t know how you guys go back to your land house after a weekend of this.
Thank you for the sweet words about our baby! We are so fortunate to have her, and to be able to have this boat. We definitely have to make sure to be extra prepared with a little one and a dog onboard. We’re still learning as our daughter is growing, too. Soon she will be walking and it will be all hands on deck 😂. We are always happy when at the boat, that is for sure! Thanks again for watching, and glad you are inspired by the houseboat lifestyle
That’s awesome! We’re hoping to make “boat camping” a more regular thing for our family, too. Think we just tipped our toes in the water that weekend, and can’t wait to do more of it. It reminded us both of the sailing trips we’ve gone on in the Caribbean where it feels like an adventure with nature.
An excellent and informative video. You guys have an idyllic lifestyle, and being able to just get away from city life for such a wonderful experience is a joy to watch. I loved how you went through the prep for leaving the dock, and reminding people of the need to have the blowers going so there are no fumes in the engine bay before stating the engines, checking batteries on the carbon monoxide alarms, and closing the trips on the shore power before removing the power lines shows you have this stuff down pat. It is very annoying to see people just jump on a boat and take off, without having a sensible start up procedure (just a personal gripe :-) I look forward to seeing more of your content. Cheers from Northern Ireland.
Hello from the U.S.A! Thank you so much for the kind words in your comment, and for watching our video! It's great to see our content is making it across the Atlantic!! Being out on a boat is always a blast, but like most fun things, folks need to be safe or things can go wrong. Sounds like you also have some boating experience. If so, what kind of boating do you enjoy most? Have a wonderful weekend, and Northern Ireland is beautiful!
@@DeepHouseboatLife I have been crew on racing maxi's and spent many years planning my perfect boat. Just ned a few million and it'll all be grand :-) I love the American trawler yachts - Fleming, Marlow, Grand Banks - and the Aquilla Motor Cats are really cool, but definitely done with sailing and want a big old gin palace to cruise about in the med one day. The waters around here are much too cold for my liking but yes, it is beautiful.
Great video. That lil girl is going to LOVE TRAVELING. Thanks for the info on "being prepared" to go "off shore". Living in Michigan, WE LOVE OUR GREAT LAKES, and this is another way to enjoy them. 👏👍👏🥂
Absolutely, a houseboat on the Great Lakes would be a ton of fun. Houseboat owners up in Michigan probably have some great advice on how to winterize one, too. We sure hope she loves to travel when she is older like we do. We love taking her places with us!
Nell, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. We hope that you enjoyed this video and future videos to come. Being out on the water is very special and we enjoy sharing our experience with everyone. Hope you have a wonderful day!
This is wonderful. I’ve never experience a house boat, nor boat camping. Thank you for sharing. I have a pontoon boat on my humble lake house property. I’m living through your eyes. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching our video! Before we got our houseboat, we wished we could have seen more videos out there that showed houseboat camping and how special it can be. We hope to do more of this as we go into the fall. Pontoons are great boats! Glad to hear you enjoy being out on the lake.
What a wonderful comment to get to read today! Thank you for also brightening our day and watching our video. So glad we could take some stress out of your day with houseboat life.
It makes us happy to hear you enjoyed our video. Thank you for watching and for your kind words. We can't wait to get back out to houseboat camp this spring. Hope you have a happy holiday!
That's awesome! If you ever get the chance to stay on a houseboat, or even just visit, it's a ton of fun. There is a houseboat or two on AirBnB on our lake. Lake Powell out in Utah is a HUGE houseboating lake where you can actually rent and drive the houseboats. It's on our bucket list to do one day. I bet there is something closer-by to Florida, though.
Quick tip. We secure our mooring lines to the front posts while at the dock still so we don't have to walk it down the side like that. You have a beautiful boat. I like your channel. We've been houseboaters since 2017. We bought our forever boat last year. Lake life is the best life
Thank you so much for watching our video and for supporting our channel! It’s been really fun to share what we’re up to and meet other houseboaters on here. What kind of houseboat did you get for your forever boat, if you don’t mind sharing? And thank you for the tip! The way we did it in the video is how we used to do it when I was a kid. Though, the way you suggest will make it MUCH easier. We’ll definitely secure them to the front posts while at the dock next time we go out. We actually saw someone over July 4th that had strung a noodle on each rope so they float. Thought that was a great idea, too. Lake life really is the best life.
@@DeepHouseboatLife we bought a 99' 18x85 sumerset. It was a 1 owner boat thats been undercover its whole life. We are hoping to live aboard in the next 5 years and it is suitable for living aboard.i dont have a youtube channel but my daughter has one. Its called "basically Megan. She did a houseboat vid a couple of weeks ago if you would like to see our boat We have learned a lot from other houseboaters in these 4 years. Its been pretty awesome. I've spent my whole life camping and dreaming of houseboating and now we are living that dream. God is good!
Wow, your boat is awesome, and congratulations!! Love that there are two top decks. Definitely plenty of space to live aboard full time. Looking forward to seeing more houseboat videos from Megan this summer. Even though I've been houseboating since I was a kid, I'm still learning a lot from other houseboaters as an adult. It's fun for my wife, Jessie, to learn everything, too. When we were saving up for our houseboat, we were never really sure we would get there. Now that we are here, wouldn't take back the sacrifices that made it happen for second. Life is short!
We do the same thing! Over the years, we watched a lot of sailing and other boating channels that inspired us to follow our dream of owning a houseboat. Gets us through the work week and pumped to get back to boat life
Hey y’all! Great video. I’ve been told not to secure to the trees on the beaches. Not sure if the core tickets or if it’s just frowned upon. I also pre arrange my beach lines so I don’t have to climb around like that. We always have someone at the helm while tying off just in case a good wind comes along. Have a great time and I hope to see y’all on the water.
David, thank you for the comments and watching our video. In my experience we have always tied up to the tree, but it is definitely something I will look into more. I would hate to get a ticket from the core while out camping. Great call out about tying the lines to stern and running them to the bow before leaving the dock. We had someone else comment on the channel with the same recommendation. Hope to see you on the water as well and have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Weekend!
I am subscribed to a ton of sailing channels a a few MV channels but this is the first Houseboat video I have seen ! Bank camping is great ! I had a covered slip at great marina on pool #26 on the Mississippi just NW of STL MO was 30 min from my house and 15 min from my office ! I just had a 1974 26' Cuddy cabin that I totally restored but also had a 21' BR that did 60 mph on a trailer in the yard ! Had that slip for 8 yrs. Many great memories ☺️ Buy some Avon Skin So Soft for that pretty little girl the mosquitoes love the soft skin my son was two the first boat camp and he looked like he had a bad case of chickenpox ! Gonna subscribe and watch your daughters channel ✌️💜🎸
So glad you have found our channel, Dave! Welcome, and we appreciate you as a viewer. There are a few sailing channels that have inspired us over the years that we still like to watch today. The Great Loop ones are fun to watch, too. We just like watching anything related to boating! How far up and down the Mississippi would y'all take your cuddy cabin? Would be fun to be on a river where you can travel and explore a lot. Luckily Lake Lanier is pretty big, but being on a river sounds awesome. Love that you took your son boat camping when he was young. I bet he has some lifetime memories growing up that way. And thank you for the recommendation on the Avon - will check that our for Clare so the mosquitoes don't get her! Don't want that baby eaten up. Really appreciate you watching and subscribing!
I would love to do this in our pontoon if I had an enclosure!! You guys are not roughing it at all! This is like a floating condo! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Lay Lake Alabama!
It would be really fun to do something like this on a pontoon! Would be extra adventurous! Oh yes, it’s like bringing your house with you wherever you go on the lake. Very comfortable, especially with our sweet baby girl! Not sure who likes the house more, her or us haha. Thank you so much for watching our video, and hope all is well in Alabama.
@@DeepHouseboatLife your boat would be a great Airbnb unless you live on there full time. It would really be fun to travel the intercostal waterways in it. A couple went all the way around the Atlantic/Gulf intercostal waterways up the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes in their pontoon. I think they are on RU-vid. I could do it in your boat but no way in a pontoon! If you need any company let me know 😂 Happy 🛶
@@ladyonlay7802 we do part time on our houseboat, so not quite full time. There are a handful of houseboats on our lake that do AirBnB, but it's not very common here. We would LOVE to do the Great Loop one day in a boat. Really impressive that someone didi it in a pontoon! Think we saw something about that in a Facebook group we're a part of. If our daughter wasn't so young, we'd opt for something more adventurous like that. Though...will admit the houseboat is the right kind of cozy for us these days, especially as we're getting older!

Now I'm 62 years old retired and I suffer a stroke that left me without the use of my left arm and hand and lower left leg I have to walk with a cane . Can't do stairs real well. Hi Lyle, it’s nice to meet you! Thank you for sharing your story, and we are so sorry to hear about your stroke. Imagine that has been really tough, and we hope you are able to get out and enjoy the water sometimes. Thank you for watching our video. We definitely plan to do more off grid houseboating soon and will make a video to share. Take care!
Hello, over there in the UK 👋!! Thank you for watching our channel! This was definitely a dream weekend for us, and our dream life. So happy we can inspire you!
We go houseboating every summer on Dale Hollow Lake in TN. We always try to find a spot in a more protected cove. You get a lot of wave action from passing boats in a spot like that on the main channel. Nice boat!
Hey Joe! You are right about the waves from the main channel, especially on a busy day on Lake Lanier. Some days it can feel more like an ocean. We did have a few rollers where we were with passing boats. Luckily we were there after a big holiday weekend, so there wasn’t a ton of people on the lake. Otherwise we would have definitely had to move.
Thank you for watching, Edwin! It was such a special time for us, and we are looking forward to more adventures like this as a family. Appreciate your kind words.
Thank you for subscribing and watching our video, Max! Really appreciate having you here. We are so lucky to have Clare in our lives. She is so sweet 😃
Drop anchor as you approach the beach. Set the anchor and then let line pay out as you beach. You can then tie off the bow to trees and tighten the line to the anchor at the rear. You are then secured at the bow and stern. This is sometimes done at sea with a kedge anchor. You can also tie off the bow and then use a tender to carry the anchor out away from the stern and achieve the same result. Happy boating.
This is a great tip and I think it would work, and really appreciate you sharing this knowledge. We unfortunately do not have a windlass, or winch, to pick up an anchor. The lake we are on covered up a forest in the 1950's and there are so many dead trees and logs that once we drop anchor, it might be next to impossible to get up... even with a windlass. We don't have a tender or jetski to move the anchor. Though, when we do potentially get one in the future, we will give this a try! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, and I hope you have a great weekend!!
Oh she is such a sweet little cutie, may God protect your family with safety and health as you are living the lifestyle of your choices, have a great season,in the name of Jesus, looks like you are ready to get started, enjoy, always pray. Bye!!!!!!
Great Video ! How BIG is your Boat? TIP: I would go into the beach BOEw first to keep your boats prop from getting to shallow? If backing into shore be sure yor anchor will keep you deep enough to power out!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Yasser. We have a lot to be happy about in our lives, especially our sweet daughter. Thank you for watching our video
There are several people on our dock who are retired and live on their boat. It sounds so-able! Is there a type of boat/location your most interested in for retirement?
Did you depart from Port Royale Marina and go to the northern part of the lake? Nice location. Reminds me of a beach we go to just south of Port Royale. Great video!
Yeah! We went under Brown's' Bridge and found a nice little spot in a protected cove for a few days. Not too sure our houseboat could fit under the bridge right now with the higher water level, but we are itching to get back up that way for some houseboat camping this summer. We need to do some exploring south of Port Royale soon, too. Lots of great beaches down there. Thanks for watching our video! It's always fun hearing from people who are actually on Lake Lanier. See you out there!
Are there any avid fisherman on board? Would love to see some of your catch and maybe cook videos. Love watching the dog and baby enjoying the camping.
I grew up camping out of our boat. Smaller boats carry tents and there are thousands of islands to go to so you don’t have neighbours. I remember playing “Barbies” with my daughters ‘cause I guess I wasted all the boy seeds (lol).
Wow, what a cool experience! Camping out of a smaller boat with tents would be a lot of fun. I'm sure your daughters have some great memories playing barbies with you while boat camping. Thank you so much for watching our video!
I've a little 28' houseboat on a trailer, kept at the house under a carport - to own/use/maintain I wouldn't trade it for any boat. I have a hand winch mounted at each rear corner of the boat - like what you find on boat trailers. Line runs to the front of the boat, 'around a cleat, then back to the rear again where it's hooked to another cleat. When I beach I unhook the line, 'get on shore and pull the end of the line in then find a place to drive in a stake or tree to tie to. Then winch up the slack. I can do this with a beer in my hand, but I've practiced for a few years Cool boat
Hey Gary! Welcome to the channel, and thank you for taking the time to watch our video and comment. That sounds like a great way to get your boat beached, and the fact you can do that with a beer in hand is ever better! You know how magical being out on a beach on your houseboat can be. Does your houseboat have an aluminum or fiberglass hull?
@@DeepHouseboatLife thanks for the question, it's analuminum, 'pontoon, 8 by 28. microwave, flush toilet, 3 burner stovetop and grill up front with a full size patio table and 4 chairs. It's 50 miles to the lake so after buying the truck gas to get there and the time spent launching then setting up a tent on the roof I've found 1 night out is silly. 3 nights is the new minimum. The boat at full power does 12 mph - I go real slow and have found That Side of the Lake is no different from This Side of the Lake. ha ha On average I use 6 gallons of fuel a day 'keep on boatin'

@@DeepHouseboatLife On board as I have a tent and hammock setup for the boat, but on land if the weather calls for it. I want to know if ya'll saw the woman in the flowing blue dress come up from the depths at all during your off grid weekend? Or have you or anyone you know seen her during your time on this beautifully pristine like lake with a deadly/ghostly history? I've always been spooked by Sidney Lanier Lake. I'm not entirely sure I believe or not, but Id never want to find out for myself, by myself! Love your vids guys!
While we've never had the pleasure of meeting the woman in the flowing blue dress, we'll admit it gets a little spooky at night out on the islands! Sometimes it's a little...too quiet. Let's just say we always lock our houseboat doors at night while houseboat camping so we don't have any unwanted guests haha. There is definitely a strange air about Lake Lanier. Thanks for watching our videos! It's been fun making them and chatting with folks like you.
Thanks so much for watching our video! Really glad to hear you enjoyed it. We don't live full time, but more-so part time. The longest stretch we've ever done was ten days in a row, and 20 days total in one month. We know some folks on the lake that do live on their houseboats full time, though
@OddballT4r we were out there pretty much all last weekend...you may have heard our very loud music 😆. Definitely a different experience when houseboat camping with friends vs. our daughter and dog haha. Stop by next time and say "hi." Hope you have a great rest of the week!
Thank you so much for the kind compliment on our videos! We love making them and sharing our experiences. Houseboating is a wonderful lifestyle. Hope you are able to try it out one day!
Hi Andrea! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. We have never been houseboating on Lake Powell, but it is on the bucket list of trips to take. Yes, we do keep the engines running while we get the lines set, and we have never gotten stuck. We always check the water depth to make sure the bow is on the beach with plenty of depth off the back deck!
Do you guys run through a published checklist like we do on aircraft? Just wondering since there are a variety of onboard systems in-play. I like your lifestyle.
Hey!! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. We are not required to run through a checklist, but we always do for safety. My dad used to have a v-tail bonanza and then a Cirrus 22, so I am very familiar with those check lists on aircrafts. Safe travels!
So, do you live on the boat full time? I've been thinking of getting a house boat and living on the water. No grass to cut, no property taxes. Solar Panels, and inverters is a good back up for power. My only concern is dock fees.
Thank you for watching our video! We do not live on the houseboat full time, but we are up here about 10-15 days a month. We have several dock neighbors that live on their boat full time and absolutely love it. Honestly if it was just Jessie and me, I would strongly consider full time boat life. In Georgia, we still have property taxes for our houseboat, but dock fees can get steep, which is kind of a trade off. Slip fees are really determined by if your slip is covered or not, and how long and wide the slip is. Based on the back of the napkin math, the dock fees + houseboat property taxes vs. home property taxes basically come out in the wash. You may be able to make up the difference with utilities usually being cheaper on a houseboat. If you are thinking of living full time on a houseboat, I would support it! Life is about the journey and not always the destination!!! Hope to see you on the water soon.
@@DeepHouseboatLife thanks for replying. I'm on the Tennessee River in Paris, TN. I love being on the water. Bought my first pontoon boat this spring, and I cant get enough of it. I'm retired and my wife isn't far behind me.
Yes you can definitely get a houseboat on the Tennessee River. It would be a great experience to do part of the (out of the way) Great Loop on your houseboat!! That’s awesome y’all have a pontoon and are out enjoying life. Congratulations!!!
Hey Helen! Thank you for watching our video. Unfortunately our houseboat would not last long in salt water. They are designed to be freshwater only. The hull design would not do well in the waves and the salt water would be hard on the exposed aluminum hull. A cruiser, or trawler would be great for saltwater. Are you near the ocean?
@@DeepHouseboatLife no i never seen the ocean (unless sea world counts) i was 5 the first time and the last time i was ever on a boat(the bobalo in michigan) i live in ohio,oh and thank you for answering my question,be safe
Hey Peter! Thank you for watching. We are looking at solar panels but right now we can’t justify the cost. We only leave the dock a few times a year (lake is above full pool), which limits our boat camping spots. We would utilize solar to the fullest extent if we left the dock more. It would be a great addition to the boat if we can find a solid battery bank, inverter and solar system. Are you using solar at your home or in your boat?
Hey John! Thank you for watching and commenting. We are looking at getting a new inverter and one of the criteria we have is making sure it can charge from a a solar panel. It would be great to be off grid for longer and not have to run the generator as much! Solar is on the list of ideas and hopefully project we can tackle soon. Have a great day and hope to see you back here soon!
Hey Phillip! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Renting houseboats is not something we know much about. There are a few houseboats on AirBNB that we have seen on our lake that are roughly $250/night. If you can find one, I bet you can get a deal for renting it for several weeks instead of days. What lakes are you looking to rent a houseboat? We hear Lake Powell in Utah is a huge houseboat rental lake.
@@DeepHouseboatLife something in Tennessee. I have a 20 foot pontoon and have more experience than one can ever imagine. I have used not just as a pleasure boat but also as the work boat at the Marina where I kept it. From putting in docks, taking them out, even the fuel dock. Plus numerous tows.
I went once on a 72’ houseboat with 11 women. On Lake Cumberland KY/TN I believe it was. It’s more expensive out West on lakes Powell, Meade vs Dell Hollow, Cumberland and many others. It also depends how big houseboat you want. Ours about 15 yrs ago was around $3,000 for 5 days 4 nights. Dividing up the price helps a lot between all on the boat. I priced lakes out west and it’s up to $6,000 to $10,000 for a week for large houseboat. Everyplace is different though. Go online and price them
We hope to either head back to this beach or another one soon. The lake is above full pool with all the rain here lately, so the beaches have disappeared at the moment. Thank you for watching our video!
It seems to vary by marina where we are, and has increased a little bit each year we've had our houseboat. Right now our slip fee at our marina is less than $1k per month. There are less expensive slips, and also more expensive sips, in our marina for houseboats. It depends a lot on whether or not you're under a covered slip, have an unobstructed view of the lake, and the types of amenities provided by the marina. Thank you for watching our video, Chuck! We appreciate having you here 😃
Hey Robert - thanks for watching our video! We actually don't have a tender/smaller boat just yet. We'd like to eventually get one, but just use our houseboat to get around the lake right now. Kinda strange that our houseboat is our "runabout" boat ha. Lots of folks in our marina do have a second, smaller boat that they use to make quick, short trips around the lake instead of moving their houseboat.
Thank you for watching our video, Nancy! Haha yeah, we know they are called lines. For some reason we just can’t seem to remember to call them that. Tomato tom-ato, we suppose!

It's usually meant to be helpful, but sometimes it's meant to make people feel less than. And yet we all still cross the same finish line. We're of the mindset that we aim to be more precise, never perfect, where it matters to us (the brass tax), and the small stuff just comes out in the wash (doesn't matter). At the end of the day, houseboating is meant to be enjoyed, and that is where we focus. Thanks for watching our videos and for your support!! Hope all is well in Florida.
Definitely got to enjoy that red sky at night sailors delight in this video. We consider ourselves lucky whenever we get to catch a red sunset like this. Crazy beautiful
Thank you! We really appreciate the recommendation. We've been looking more into this and think we're going to choose to go with lithium batteries soon. Do agree that lithium batteries may be our best option
@@DeepHouseboatLife whatever litium you go with design your system to handle 48v. that means all your 12 volt wiring will be overkill and you wont have any voltage loss. also you can get a new 48v 5kw inverter for under $1000 now. good luck and ask if you have any questions.
We have definitely been enjoying the break from big city life on our houseboat. The city certainly has a lot to offer, but there’s nothing quite like the houseboat lifestyle. Unfortunately, there are still criminals on our lake 😩
