Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin: Picket Fence Build & Woodstove Cooking

We head back to the rustic off-grid Pallet Wood Cabin in the woods. This is part 9 of the wilderness cabin build where we are using recycled Pallet Wood to create a tiny homestead in the forest. The project has come a long way since we first cleared an area in the woods to make space for the foundations of the off grid cabin.
Since the first episode, we have built the cabin frame and fixed a roof using a piece of reclaimed tin from an old barn. We inserted a small glass window from an old garden shed. To heat the cabin in the cold winter months, we installed a woodstove. The stove we use is the G Stove Heat View with stove pipe oven for cooking fresh bread. We also built a porch from natural materials, and although this is not used much in the Winter, it will be well used during the spring and summer months to relax in nature and listen to the wild animals and birds.
To furnish the cabin we built a pallet wood bed, a folding table, some shelves and a book case. Outside, we built a log store for the firewood. At the back of the cabin we built a lean-to roof and installed a folding sink and mirror. In this particular episode, we show you how to build a picket fence using pallet wood and minimal tools. The method we use makes good use of the pallet and leaves very little waste.
Although not quite a Log Cabin, the structure itself is suitable as a one man shack and is an ideal base camp to use when living off the land. As spring is not far away, I hope to be foraging for wild food and plants, developing survival skills and using bushcraft to learn more about the area. It is a great base to use to learn these skills, and in time I hope you develop more primitive methods to survive. Primitive Technology (the RU-vid Channel) is a huge inspiration and he is really helping to pass on these skills to further generations so that the art does not fade away. Find a link to his channel below. Thanks for joining us on the adventure! Stay tuned for more pallet wood projects and diy Dad & Son stuff!

EPISODE 9: We use a simple method of breaking down a Pallet to make a Picket Fence. Dad used to do this over 30 years ago well before RU-vid existed. But we did put up a film on it about 6 years ago on TAFishing: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N08dJ3pWtgM.html

TA Outdoors I was thinking of investing in a chain link fence to surround my raspberries since my dog has decided to use them as his personal toilet. But I think now I'll wait and do a picket fence from pallet wood instead. Thanks for the idea. I'll do a video on it when the time comes.

TA Outdoors as for your moss idea, collect a lot of moss, and some agar and dirt, put it in a blender, and then pop a small layer of mud on your roof and pour the mixture on top.

It's always interesting to see what children have picked up from their parents trait wise. Some dislike it and do everything they can to be different. Some see a friend when they become an adult. It's a bit rare for sons to find a friend in their father. I was one of those do everything to be different but eventually found a friend in my father when we started sailing and maintaining our boat. His sailing days are behind him due to health but the friend is still there. Tons of good memories popped up while I watched you and your dad build the cabin. Thanks for digging those memories up again. Started bringing up some of our adventures which perked him right up. Love the channel.

My grandparents had a log cabin in Kentucky, and my favorite time was sleeping in the upstairs loft area, under the Tin roof. Just hearing the rain on the tin roof, was like having Nature's lullaby singing you too sleep. Very fond memories.

Your Dad is a hoot! He reminds me of my dear ole Pop. He would take me on long "Nature Walks." He was a self taught Herbalist, which he learned from the Scouts in the 1930's. Your Pop is right about the warming trend in the 1970's. On the Mid-Atlantic East Coast US we used to get wicked snow, now hardly any any at all.

Your design utilized the pallet construction. Thanks, Mike and Graeme, for another great video! Watching a father and son building a project together is what makes the series special to me.

Put an old wool blanket on the roof. then moss and then the chicken wire if you need. The moss will grow on the blanket and it will stay put under the wire. It will grow through it eventually. It needs lots of water and moister in the beginning but I guess that's the last problem in the UK :) Don't let it dry out the first couple of weeks. After that it should do fine and start to grow. It's always pleasure following you and your dads hard work! Good luck!!

Hi there, love the channel! Came here from Alec’s page. Just wanted to put in my experience on moss transplanting, I have a landscape design/installation firm in New England and do a bit of work in Coastal Maine which has a relatively similar climate to your own. Firstly, moss doesn’t have a true root system, more of an anchoring system. There are some exceptions like hair cap moss (which isn’t technically a moss) which will require a root system to survive transplant. But for the most part mosses can be scrapped up and plopped down with relatively little fuss. Of course you want to make sure that they are being transplanted to a site with higher sun exposure and wind than they are used to. But otherwise you should be fine if the moss gets an appropriate amount of moisture. Some things to keep in mind, some mosses grow on rocks, some of dead trees, some on forest floor or duff. If you are able to duplicate their growing conditions you will have the best chance of them continuing to grow. As a last point you should keep in mind the glacial pace that moss moves at. If you strip a yard of moss from the forest it will take at least a decade for that moss to return to its previous state. Just something to keep in mind when you are checking on your mosses progress 😉 Anywho, thanks for the great content!
