Watching you do things like this and your instruction style reminds me of my dad. I always wanted to watch what he was doing, so he started narrating everything so that I could learn.

From what I've read a straight carbon monoxide detector will not detect a propane leak. You may wish to get a specific propane gas detector and install it at floor level (propane is heavier than air) between the stove and gas tank. Your CO detector may be designed to detect both CO and propane but you may not want them at the same location. I'd probably put the CO detector near my bed (so as not to die in my sleep) and the propane detector at floor level by the gas appliance, so that the building doesn't fill with propane before sounding the alarm.

This from a website: Heat and smoke rise, which is why we place smoke alarms high on the wall or ceiling. Carbon monoxide, however, mixes with the air. For this reason, it is preferable to install CO alarms at knee level - the approximate height of a sleeping person’s nose and mouth.

Great video. We recently purchased a convertible to go into our remote Alaska cabin. The conversion was the same as yours however I've not been able to figure out connecting the propane hose to the back of the stove. Any tips?

Whoa! They make that super simple to convert from NG to LPG! We used to think that a kit would have to be acquired with different orifices and regulators. But it looks like it is just adjusting the screws. Thanks for showing this process! You guys rock! - Brian + Erin

Very nice how-to video. I work on vintage gas stoves, primarily O'Keefe & Merritts. They have adjustable orifice valves instead of fixed orifice valves, which makes NG/LP conversion simpler. Until today, I thought all modern gas stoves had fixed orifices, which seems a nuisance - having to keep track of little extra bits. Thanks to your video, I learned some modern stove brands also have adjustable orifices. Cool. I realize it isn't a permanent installation, but I was glad to see you had a portable propane tank for your stove. I plan to do that while working on my gas stove's conversion.

Back home in England it’s required to have a propane or “explosive gas” detector installed when you’re using propane inside. It’s a heavy gas so it settles down low and slowly fills a space. I have one installed over here in CA even tho it’s not required. They are an inexpensive peace of mind.

The crap that they put in the propane let’s you smell any leak way before an explosive mixture is present.

I missed the conversion of our Premier stove so enjoyed this video. We started out with this stove and went to a 36" with full top grates that make it easier to move large pots. If possible you can also buy a "pig" propane tank that can be filled by the delivery truck and also can be taken to town if needed. Your video's are very informative, thank you!

I burn 2 100lbs a year for my stove in winter i got small battery car blankets duct taped on the tank its 115 v power but it work after minus 20 Celsius you need heat for the propane not to freeze You can always have a small tank inside for cold days Take care be safe

Interesting to see there is a regulator on the propane tank and on the stove. Here in the uk we only have the regulator on the tank and to convert natural gas to propane we change the individual jets on each burner. Our property isn’t connected to mains gas and we have a 2000litre propane tank so we have to convert everything or buy specific lpg equipment.

I don't see new stoves with pilot lights anymore. Not sure if they were efficient anyhow. How much propane did they burn in a month? Anyway, seems for off-grid the next best ignition would be a battery operated spark. Nice vid, always good to see somebody who knows what they're doing with these stoves.

A little surprising that the manufacturer allows the purchaser to make this conversion. Liability should the end user not get it right. I've had clothes dryers swapped over from NG to LP and was told" only a certified technician could make the switch." You made it look pretty straightforward.
@SimpleLivingAlaska
@SimpleLivingAlaska 5 лет назад
Tracey Osborn, that is a good point because it absolutely is a safety issue if done incorrectly. Believe it or not we watched the manufacturer's youtube videos on how to convert it and referred to the manual :)

carbon monoxide does NOT "tend to rise" it is the opposite it settles. You need the detector lower and closer to the source to detect leaks early. Please be safe.
@SimpleLivingAlaska
@SimpleLivingAlaska 5 лет назад
Tammy McNeill from what we've researched head level is appropriate (although it is commonly believed floor level is where the monitor should be) we have ours on the first floor above our head level, CO distributes throughout air and will rise.

We do appreciate the concern and generally do not always go with "what science says" but most literature indicates higher is better: healthybuildingscience.com/2013/02/22/carbon-monoxide-facts/ www.sterlinghomeinspections.com/sterling-home-inspection-blog/2013/12/11/carbon-monoxide-detector-placement-dos-and-donts/

Do you need a 11" water column regulator on the tank or a 2 psi regulator on the tank or can the range be run directly from the tank?

Is there just one orifice shared between the oven/broiler? I'm actually doing the reverse conversion (LPG > Natural Gas) and can't figure out how many orifices should be down there. Also curious how long your 5 gal LPG tank would last if used just for cooking?

Is it typical for them to be dual capable? I had planned on salvaging a propane stove from an old RV but if its that easy to convert over from NG that might be an option.
@SimpleLivingAlaska
@SimpleLivingAlaska 5 лет назад
I believe through this manufacturer they are all dual capable and easy enough to convert, RV stoves are already set up for propane, we are not sure how simple other stoves are to convert (if even possible). A typical household oven would not be good for this situation due to the glow bar in the oven needing electricity. Ours also has independent ignitors so when we light the range it doesn't also spark the oven.
