Here the major question: Would you consider purchasing a teardrop like this? Is the extra challenge of towing down rough terrain worth the benefits?
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 2 года назад
Good question. For me, no. It's out of my budget, and taking any trailer with me isn't worth the inconvenience when it's just me and my wife. If I had a couple of kids, or my wife and I were mountain bikers/kayakers, or we were working on the road full time, then I would consider getting a trailer. If I had the money, I'd end up with something like the Black Bean. It's so much better built than the mass produced campers, and was flawless on the rough roads.

After seeing over a dozen teardrop trailers in the last ten years, I’ve got to comment that this is by far the most thought out design, and what appears to be, quality materials. Pulling it with my old Fj62 is out of the question however. Also, I think you get what you pay for with this company. Thanks for the video. I’ll be seriously considering this company’s trailers in the future.

I have the Black Bean (our's is red so we call it Red Bean, as in red beans and rice;) ), it is, in my opinion, totally worth it. It is very comfortable to sleep in, our s has been down some fairly rough trails and this year will be down many more. It is great having a trailer to leave at a camp site and go ride a trail then come back in the evening. It is also nice that there is little set up if it has been a crazy long day and you just want to go to sleep. My previous set up had a roof top tent and it was somewhat of a pain to get everything set up at the end of the day. Bean's customer service is awesome, every issue we have had they have been super responsive and gone well above and beyond. The Black Bean is a bit heavy, my 2005 LJ Wrangler with a 6 cylinder, 6 speed manual, 33" tires and 4.88 gears would work pretty hard on long up hill grades on the highway. We have since replaced that with a 392 Wrangler and there is no issue pulling it now. All in all, it is a premium trailer and it is a bit pricey, but the value is there, you will get what you pay for with a Black Bean. And no, I do not work for Bean Trailer ;)

For the commenters; we bought a Mean Bean last year. Quite loaded out with what I felt was the most important features. The premium plus galley; roof rack system, rock sliders. It was about $28k. We can park it in our garage with our ikamper tent on top. It’s easy to tow. We’ve taken it off road just fine. It’s awesome for our family of 5 trying to maintain a bit of minimalist camping while being able to get to places most rv trailers can’t go.

I have nearly the same setup. I've backpacked for decades and still do for 2-3 days but just get too much pain from prolonged ground sleeping over more than a few nights. Boondock camping just outside some of our busiest national parks has been phenomenal. Also, use the Bean for a basecamp and backpack in for 2-3 nights on long trails that I would otherwise not be able to access. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? For my family, absolutely.

@@tomking5358 I'm a bit paranoid so I do 2 things. I use a Trimax wheel clamp lock. Problem is that if you remove the wheel and replace with the spare, the thief is on his way. The Bean has a tongue that separates into 2 parts. Great for fitting in the garage and security. I split the tongue by removing the cotter pin and placing a good quality pin coupler lock through the connecting hole.

I saw one of these a few weeks ago at Flagstaff Overland Expo - they're quite nice. But...all tricked out they cost roughly the same as a new Jeep Rubicon. That seemed to be the overall strategy at the event - to show the premium model but display the basic price. The add-ons are eye-popping numbers. For the average person who just wants to kick around the desert a few times a year, rentals are the way to go.

@WaynePlaysGamez

These bean trailers look incredible and I would absolutely consider purchasing one, if they weren't astronomically expensive. Trailer companies like Bean are prohibitively expensive and very unrealistic for a significant chunk of overland enthusiasts. I hope Bean sees this and recognizes there is a market for low cost off road trailers. This is currently being filled largely through the DIY space either building a teardrop yourself outright or through cargo trailer conversions. While I recognize the increasing costs of labor and materials, there is still a significant markup on even the most basic Bean trailers. I had considered purchasing a Bean or similar teardrop off road trailer as they would be excellent for my weekend warrior/occasional weeklong trip travels, however their current price point is entirely unrealistic.

As well engineered and constructed these various "off road" trailers are, and given the increasing costs of labor and materials, I suspect that only 10% of these manufacturers will still be in business in 5 years and that would be unfortunate as they certainly are a valued niche product. And these off road trailers can in no way be compared to the recent boom in main stream RVs as the customer base for those is huge, at least temporarily, even with the mostly very poor construction of the majority of those manufactured.

@@mikepierson3097 Overlanding/camping will only continue to grow just like it has for last 100 years my friend. And the RV industry is a $180 billion industry. Overlanding isn’t going anywhere, and people have been spending far more than 45k on campers since camping started. the point of these “lil” campers is to have the capability to go anywhere without compromising. Why spend 40k on a stupid big RV that you can only take to a recreational campsite a couple times a year, over buying this for 40k and you can literally go anywhere you want. Bigger does not mean better in this industry. You are also forgetting that the light weight of these trailers is an extremely important feature. If you don’t already have a large enough tow vehicle for a 25foot RV, you’re 80k in the hole for a new truck and RV you cant even take anywhere. These campers actually save people thousands because they can use their current vehicle and not have to upgrade to compensate for a 7klb trailer. Theres more than meets the eye here, and I think you should dig a bit deeper into what goes into making these things, not to mention that 99% of these campers are custom made to order, and not mass produced crap that sits on a dealer lot. You customize the entire trailer. Look into it

I wonder if they would do a slight modification for me. I would want to 2 center cabinet doors in the cabin sealed closed with a single piece of wood instead of 2 opening doors. They would be non-functioning on the interior. so now the interior has only 2 cabinets, (the end cabinets as pass through). From the kitchen side you still have all 4, but again only the 2 ends are pass through. The point of all this is now it allows me to mount a TV in the cabin (on that single piece of wood). easy modification for them to do. just a single piece of wood on the 2 center cabinets instead of 2 opening doors. I could do it but I would never be able to match the wood finish they use unless I just get the white cabinets. That would be a cool option for them to offer.
