In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Oh the key saga! I'm in the opposite situation as you right now. My old Kawasaki Concours 14 had a key fob so I got used to that, but now I have a new TransAlp which has a standard key setup and I'm constantly forgetting to take the key out of the ignition when I stop somewhere because I'm used to just having the fob in my pocket. It also doesn't help that when I have the tank bag on I can't really see the ignition switch without leaning forward over the bag so it's somewhat 'out of sight - out of mind.'

Funny you should say that , I'm the same , my car has a fob that I'm always cursing because it's in a different pair of trousers ( I used to leave keys in the ignition ) , so I rode to a pub for tea one night and when it came time to leave I thought I'd lost my keys because I couldn't find them in my pocket, that's when my mate looked at my bike and said they're still in the ignition, good thing the locals were honest.

I HAVE A MOTORCYCLE JUST LIKE THE ONE YOU ARE USING, TWO OBSERVATIONS, FIRSTLY ON A LONGER TRIP YOU ALWAYS CARRY THE SPARE KEY, SECONDLY, USE A LORD ATTACHED TO THE KEYS AND ATTACH THE LORD TO THE TROUSER FEEL LOOP. that is the most Kiwi thing you can do!- The Vege/Marmite comparison - and you made the right choice. a delightful episode. Your step-off in the first crossing was inevitable, I know how that one is full of football sized boulders. You have captured Molesworth/Rainbow with aplomb. Ive also flown the route and I truly believe that it is the best ride in NZ. I live my life through your videos now haha. Thank you for taking us to D'urville Island - somewhere Ive not been. Your filming/editing is awesome. Ive watched every vid since I found your Africa videos

Agreed about the keyless motorcycles--Harley-Davidson has that, along with an anti-theft system that can get you stranded with no way to get help from passersby. You pay extra for a colossal loss in convenience. Motorcycles are supposed to be simple and basic, anyway--not loaded down with complicated electronics which can't be trusted. Sooner or later, everything fails. Simplicity rules.

Yikes, losing that key fob was nerve racking….I have a Kawasaki with a fob, I wear it on a lanyard around my neck. It has a separate key for a tail bag like yours, I just lean down it open it, it’s a pain but the fob never leaves me. Glad it worked out for you and you found it. 🥳🥳🥳

My Road Glide has a pin you can enter if you forget your key or the battery to the fob dies.

Unfortunately taking a nap in the water crossing. That means that your bike and luggage is too heavy. Good that you got help. Heavy bikes have heaps of comfort, but in case you drop them you need a crane ;-) Marmite might help. Beautiful scenery in NZ. Happy days, Günter/Nürnberg

I know a guy who placed the keys of a Rental car on the roof and took off to the highway 😂. Was good while it lasted. Cost him 500 euros. Nice kiwis btw 👍 P.S: how do you manage to Ride with goggles? They shorten the SIDE vision too much for me. Heat is also and issue. Always end up going back to shades.

My wife & I did the rainbow last year on BMW G310 GS bikes - had a few drops in that same river crossing and scree slopes. Good to see that Marmite came out on top too!

I would go back and find my keys, but they would have been run over by a truck(my luck). There should be a small plastic key that you can use as a backup to start the bike. At least the keyless 1250 has that option. Just never put the plastic key in the same place as the regular key and you can get out of trouble.

Kinga, you're not getting any younger dear. It's time for a smaller motorcycle. I switched to a x300 Versys 4 years ago. It is so much easier and much cheaper to insure plus greater gas mileage . awesome, I follow both of you. last year I drove with a neighbor to the airport in her car. she got out and we said our good. bye and I drove off. I think I saw colors on the dash and some sounds as well...not sure exactly but a level of fear that I never felt before came over me.....frantic 911 call to her as well as texting 911 because she had the "key" and I didn't know if the car would just stop at so e point. that keyless system......oh boy. safe travels! love your trips. been following for ....thru the US at least.. 😁

With your "keyless key" you should have received a tiny black emergency key which can be hidden anywhere in the clothing, or the helmet, or sewed into your jacket or pants. The transponder of this key is not strong enough to react on a larger distance than a few centimeters. You have to hold this emergency key above your rear tire against the water protector plate which is right underneath the responsible controller of the bike. And now you can start. That's how it is written down for my 1250 GS. It may be different but similar for your bike. I just can say: RTFM ;-)

I have a question for you! If it takes 3 people to lift an adventure motorcycle out of a stream does that mean it qualifies as a solo adventure bike? I've ridden through their on my Himalayan & I'm no great off road rider but I enjoy adventure. It quite literally dragged me through that rocky stream bucking & weaving. At one stage I had to kick off a large rock in order to get me going in the right direction then it climbed out over the bank at the other end, although I did the trip in reverse & to be honest it does get more challenging at the St Arnaud end, as you go further in from Hanmer Springs. I have picked my Himalayan up in the sand where I did a slow drop around a corner but the 200 kg took everything I had & I'm also only 5'7" so wouldn't be able to handle your bike anyway. I have ridden the new CF Moto 450 MT & in most respects I was very impressed as an adventure bike. I'd perhaps prefer not to have the fairing on the side as I beleive the tank sticks out enough to give leg protection from the elements but in all other respects I think it would make an excellant solo adventure bike at 196 kg with fluids. Thank you for sharing & the camp at Wainui I haven't being to before but it looked awesome.

youre right about keyless bikes, its rubbish like fly by wire throttle. we had farken cables for 100 years. My GS crapped out 30 mins into a ride around nz sth island. van back to dealership, trip cancelled.

i rode through there on a Z1 two up in 1973 on a pioneer motorcycle club motorbike rally. the road was not public then and was a access road for one of the electricity companies. you had to have all sorts of permission to go through, the road wasn't maintained and we lost a ute and quite a few bikes.

So sorry about the keys :-( It happened to me once and since then I keep the security key with me hidden in my riding pants. That way you just stick it under the rear fender and start the bike and Off you go!

I still totally don’t understand why you ride a bike you can’t lift up by yourself I don’t even think that’s safe. I know you’ve been all over the place, but that massive whale could get you into trouble and stop you going to heaps of places. Love your videos you do a great job. As for the key, that’s a piece of technology, you don’t need on a bike

NZer here, you need a wet-suit to enter water in most places, it's all glacial run off. Also Vegemite >>> Marmite. Marmite tastes like Guinness without the lines cleaned.

I bought a used car 2 years ago and I had to spend some time finding the right one that also would have a standard key. Personally I find keyless to be a terrible invention because all it takes is a split second and you sit there with a big problem on your hands. Let's say you put your key on the roof of the car as you are trying to get some coffee into the cupholders of the car, while you're at a petrol station. You forget the key but start driving. That key could be anywhere because someone could have picked it up as well. Personally I like to do things manually because then I know I've done it and when. With keyless you got to question where is the key or if you even have it at all.

I live in Nelson only an hour away from the start of the Rainbow, its a hard life 😅 The first water crossing ( 6 Mile ) catches out a lot of riders.

Hello J'ai une question pratique. Tu as la même clef pour le top case ? Pour ma part, j'ai une clef pour la GS et une autre pour le top case Givi mais accrochée ensemble... Je comprends que je dois les séparer même si la GS donne une alarme si les clefs sont trop loin 😉 273 / 5 000 Hello I have a practical question. Do you have the same key for the top case? For my part, I have a key for the GS and another for the Givi top case but hooked together... I understand that I have to separate them even if the GS gives an alarm if the keys are too far away 😉
