We didn't spend all our time photographing steam locomotives on this tour. Sandstone Estates is far more than just a collection of heritage trains, it's a working farm, its also home to a substantial collection of farm machinery and military vehicles. Having travelled through towns where many properties were protected by high fences and security gates, Clarens came as pleasant surprise, no high fences, a village green surrounded by shops and cafes catering for tourists and day trippers. With time to kill as a result of issues with one of the locomotives, we took the opportunity to visit Golden Gates Highland National Park with its fantastic rock formations, finally I've included shots taken from our coach to give a feel for the countryside and towns we passed on our return to Johannesburg.
Tour date - 17th July to 1st August 2024

South Africa is a surprising country, not what I was expecting. The scenery was beautiful and the land very productive, with maze, seet corn, soya beans and mellons having been recently cropped. I visited in winter, photos taken at Sandstone Estates during the summer months look totally different with the trains almost hidden by the maze and sweetcorn. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊.

Hello Hans, this part of South Africa is very scenic, yet almost unknown to the rest of the world. Have a nice weekend and maybe a beer or two. Best wishes. Tim🍺.

This is one of my most favorite parts of South Africa. So good to see it one more time. Did anybody try to sell you some mampoer?😂😂 That stuff tastes like cool drink but has kick worse than a donkey. Lovely photography of the hills. Hope you don't mind me taking a screenshot or two for painting. Did you walk any trails? I have been on so many, all stunning. What did you think of biltong?

Those may look like hills, but taller than 1,000', they really are mountains. 😊

@@afriquelesud i have climbed these mountains many times. Compared to what else I have climbed, these are hills for me. All due respect. Everything is relative ♥️

Hello Anna, there is plenty of tourist potential in this part of the world, yet few people outside South Africa are aware of it's beauty. I didn't get to taste mampoer, although I did have a strawberry cider from one of the pubs in Clarens, an unusual but refreshing drink. I enjoyed the biltong, I also took some home for my wife, she loved it. Please take as many screenshots as you like, the national park is an artists paradise. We didn't have enough time to do any of the walking trails, maybe another time. Best wishes. Tim.

@@afriquelesud Have you ever watched the film "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain"? - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UpcgeuOa96A.html It perfectly illustrates what afriquelesud is saying 😊.

@@Timsvideochannel1 it's New Zealand speak. Over here a mountain is a hill, Australia is across the "ditch" or "pond"....there is a funny tendency to understate things. Did you notice this when you visited here?

I was visiting during the winter dry season when it is very cold at night and pleasantly warm during the day. The video gives a misleading impression of the country, it is fertile and the land is productive, producing many crops including maze and soya beans. Once the maze has been cropped cattle graze on what is left, they also leave natural fertilizer behind. The dry winter makes everything look brown and dry, yet the rivers are flowing and there are ponds and lakes some of which can be seen in the videos. Please click on this link to see how lush and green the scenery is during the summer - www.sandstone-estates.com/index.php/home

Hi Bob, visiting South Africa was a fascinating experience, crime and poverty combine to stop the country reaching its undoubted potential and it was also devastated by Covid. There is hope on the horizon as can be seen in this video showing new trains being introduced in the bigger cities - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zde5CrWcKuU.html 🍻😊.
