This Tech Talk was inspired by a question in another session when an Office 365 admin asked how to get information back after deleting a former employees OneDrive. (It is possible for up to 30 days, but that ship had sailed). In this Tech Talk, John Petroschek, Agile IT Cloud Specialist (Our resident "Master of Migration") discusses and demonstrates how to properly remove a user's access to your Office 365 tenant without losing data or access.
Topics covered:
- Immediately shutting down access
- Remotely logging out a user
- Putting an in-place hold / Litigation hold on mailbox data
- Saving license costs for retained email boxes
- How to properly preserve OneDrive data from former employees.
WHO IS MEGAN BOWEN?
If you've watched many Microsoft demos, you've seen Megan Bowen. As the default user in Microsoft's demo tenants, she is the user who clicks on the phishing email, shares credit card infor by email, and downloads malware. Her exploits are so common, she has become an inside joke among Microsoft employees and partners, with her name becoming synonymous with user error.
We have had enough, so for this demo, when we needed to fire somebody, Megan was the obvious choice! Bye Megan!

At what point are users removed from dynamic distribution lists? At the license removal or deletion of account?

I think this is an outdated method at this point. It seems you're supposed to use litigation hold or a retention policy to save mailboxes now. Pretty tired of Microsoft changing names of features, retiring features, regrouping features, changing the location of wizards, changing the steps of wizards, rebranding products, etc. Its becoming a very time consuming task to keep up with their changes and it certainly makes learning how to do something difficult when you can't use the content that other users have put together because its outdated so quickly. Microsoft is doing a terrible job with these issues right now.

Greatname, No, Litigation holds and Retention policies are meant for users that are active, the process here is specifically for users who are being removed. Additionally retention and legal hold require specific additional licensing. That said, I feel you on the constant renaming, and frequent difficulty in keeping up with changes. You'll LOVE our latest video on installing DOS 5.0. (Seriously, it's April Fools Day and I needed to do something fun!) I've been using Microsoft products since 1985, and I still occasionally get frustrated at tool ribbons that have been in place for almost 2 decades. :)

Megan's shenanigans have become such a joke in Microsoft Demos, we were going to have shirts made with her face on them for Inspire this year.
