The man who looks like Jesus, is Avi (pronounced Ahhhvee). He's the bass and one of the original of the group (later replaced by Matt .. which you saw in the Sound of Silence wearing the white jacket). When Avi sings his solo, then Scott takes over bass (the tall blond one). The beatboxer is Kevin who also has a voice of an angel if you listen to Mary, Did You Know. Then there is Kirsty who is the only female in the group, original member of the trio (Scott, Mitch and Kirstin). Then of course Mitch. Kirsty and Mitch change their looks in just about every video. Mitch of course will have you dumfounded and we call it the Mitch slap. You should watch Bohemian Rhapsody and you'll be stunned with every one of them, but mostly Mitch, Kevin and Avi.

People who don't know the Pentatonix well yet think that the line-up has changed. 😁 The same goes for Kirstin. The only person who left the band in 2017 is bass Avi and Matt came in his place.
I once saw a reactor call Avi 'jesus in a beanie' 😂 yep, all sounds made by them. Bohemian Rhapsody will blow your mind. Also 'love again' which is an original by them. You could pretty much take your pick of any of their songs and not regret it. They do a live version of this and it's exactly the same if not better!
Because a cappella music is JUST VOICES, it connects with us in a different way than musical instruments. Even Kevin's beatboxing, made from sounds from his body, is different than someone playing something "outside" of themselves. Most of us find their music very moving, so you're not alone! So here is a basic rundown on Pentatonix…The tall blond is Scott Hoying, he is primarily a baritone but he can do tenor and also covers bass when the bass singer is singing, He is kind of the leader of the group but they are pretty much equal in the group. The young lady is Kirstin Maldonado (Kirsty), she is a mezzo-soprano, but her range can go either way. She and Mitch change their looks frequently so people think they are new members. Mitch Grassi (in the hat) is primarily a tenor who can hit the very high notes at times. These three grew up in Arlington, Texas and have known each other since childhood and formed their a capella trio in high school. Scott and Kirsty graduated in 2010 and went to college, Scott was at USC in an a capella group and thought they should try out for the TV show The Sing Off but they needed at least 5 people so they added Kevin Olusola, Beatboxer (yes he is the one creating the percussion sounds) plus he plays a mean cello one in awhile (and beat boxer at the same time), he calls her Beyoncé. He also sings tenor once in awhile. Avi Kaplan (the one who looks like Jesus) is the bass, to perfection! He was with the group until 2017, he left on friendly terms for personal reasons. He helped find their new bass who is Matt Sallee, great addition and almost sounds like Avi. By the way they did win the 3rd season of The Sing Off. Got a record contract but got dropped because the powers that be didn’t think a capella would sell. So the group took to RU-vid, eventually got a record deal and the rest is history. 3 Grammys and multiple world tours plus millions of views of their songs on RU-vid they are still going strong after 11 years together. @@notbanksy2977 I'm curious if you can point me to where Kirstin has said she's an alto? I noticed that in the LMNT video, but I have always seen soprano before when Kirstin didn't just say "I'm the girl". I've been watching a ton of interviews lately to catch up, but the group has said things like "Kirstin sings alto and soprano" and "Mitch is our tenor, alto, soprano" and Mitch has called himself an alto before, too. I just shrugged off the LMNT label as the part she was singing in that particular song but now I wonder if she's changed what she considers herself more recently.
PTX fans are used to reactors pausing. As long as you rewind is a few seconds before restarting, it’s great. I love hearing your thoughts during the reaction but also don’t want you to miss anything, as there’s never a dull moment in any of their videos/songs. So pausing and talking helps with copyright and blocking and it’s also nice to hear your thoughts in real time. :)
@@SilverDestinyReactions to reassure you, many of the Pentaholics know Pentatonix's entire repertoire by note, word, and pause - so by all means, interrupt, break etc to give a true feedback reaction, not "just another stunned mullet watching the entire performance" (don't get me wrong, when I discovered them, I was a repeated, and very stunned mullet for almost all their material)... just remember, rewind a few seconds before restarting

Sorry, a pretty common bit of slang in New Zealand. We're also familiar with the mullet hairstyle, however, the saying has nothing to do with that lol.
Pentatonix’s name is a mashup of: A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave, in contrast to the heptatonic scale, which has seven notes per octave (such as the major scale and minor scale). Five members, five notes. They are made up of three people, Scott(tall blonde), Kristin, and Mitch(guy with hat), they have known each other since high school. The BASS is Avi, a friend of a friend, he has since left the group and has been replaced by Matt. The BEATBOXER is Kevin and he was found on RU-vid. They formed the group two days before being on the competition show “The Sing Off” which they won. Yes, they create all the sounds you hear from their voices and hitting their bodies, no assistance. Kevin does most of the sounds, Avi is bass, when Avi has main voice then Scott takes over the bass. Since Avi left 6 years into it , Matt has taken over his spot. The friend is Ben Bram their arranger. Besides Avi Kaplan he also saw Kevin Olusola cello boxing and through his connections with the Yale acappella community got Kevin's phone number.

All his talents? I doubt if any one song could do that. The sax, for example, doesn’t show up at all. I love that performance and I do agree you get to know Kevin a lot better after seeing that.
These people are tops in a cappella! When they do a concert all they need are mics! The wall of sound comes from the 5 of them ! Hard to believe! During the Sing-Off the judges remarked how they sounded like many more. More Please! Thank you...love your reactions, genuine!
As for suggestions....Amazing Grace is a recent release and hugely popular. Its also the first time I've seen Kirstie turned completely loose....(seat belts recommended). Dance of the Sugar Plum also won them a Grammy but is beyond description. Mary Did You Know and Bohemian Rhapsody will pretty much round you out to their different styles / looks. Hope you go for them all....your reactions are "real"...honest ...without a lot of theatrics. Thank you.
Regarding instruments in PTX videos, they are rare. If they do use an instrument, you will see it in the video. Anything else is created by their voices or their bodies. For a beautiful example of Kevin adding something glorious to an arrangement with his cello, try Say Something
Avi "Jesus" has a solo career now and it is phenomenal! two of his songs have been featured on TV shows and at nascar xfinity race as well as on a podcast. In my honest opinion he is the GOAT acapella bass singer. He tone is gorgeous and his music is very heartfelt. He is my favorite singer ever.
He is my favorite singer as well! I miss him in PTX (no shade to Matt, he's terrific too), but I'm so happy to see him doing his own thing now too and really being able to express himself.
In addition to Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer, the bass singer (whether Avi Kaplan or Matt Salle) also contribute tremendously to the rhythm and sound effects of their music. The bass drum sounds plus some whistles and occasional other sounds are from the bass singer. Also, not sure whether anyone has told you that Scott (tall blonde baritone) covers the bass line when either bass takes over the lead.
A not-so brief introduction to Pentatonix (aka PTX): Pentatonix is a five member acapella (no instrument) group. They sing covers of pop songs and have several Christmas albums in their catalog. They've also put out two albums of original material, one just released February 12, 2021 (The Lucky Ones). The original five band members were Scott, Kirstin (aka Kirstie), Mitch, Kevin and Avi. Scott, Kirstin and Mitch knew each other from high school in Texas, USA. They formed the group in 2011, adding Avi (bass) and Kevin (beatboxer). They auditioned, competed and won season 3 of the television show The Sing-Off. They've also won multiple awards over the years including three Grammys. While viewing PTX videos spanning a decade, it may appear that there has been several personel changes due to their ever-changing appearances, Kirstin and Mitch in particular. The fact is; only one member has changed. Of the five original members, four are still in the group. Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced with Matt. While performing as an acappella group since they formed, they occasionally introduce instruments such as piano (played by Scott) and cello (played by Kevin). They've also included vocals and instrumentals played by featured guests. Most of their 'instrumental' sounds however, are created by Kevin, their very talented beatboxer along with baselines performed by Avi, Matt and Scott. Wonderful reaction! Pentatonix (PTX) took their name for the Pentatonic scale which is 5 notes within a single octave. The blond is Scott, long hair and a beard is Avi (Ah vee), female is Kirstin/Kirsty (rhymes with thirsty), hat is Mitch, and the beatboxer is Kevin. Only about 3% of there videos have instruments and you will see them in the videos. If you want to knew more about them react to Imagine, you'll see how alike and how different they are to each other.
Kirsty Muldenado is an amazing vocalist. Scott is the tall blond. Mitch is the cat in the hat with the amazing 1st tenor voice gives people what we call the "Mitch face"
yes! they are making all of those amazing sounds with just their voices and bodies. no wonder you didn't seem as blown away by Daft Punk as I thought you'd be haha even in that video, all those electronic sounds were coming from mostly Kevin and Avi. Kevin basically has a drum kit in his mouth and Avi has blown out speakers before because of how low he can make bass sounds. as for Mitch: yes, he has the voice of an angel and often gives me chills whenever he sings. no matter how many times I hear him sing, I am never not blown away. please keep reacting to Pentatonix. I am in constant awe of this group and what Scott was able to assemble in the group. He had a vision that was once in a lifetime. It’s always interesting to me to watch new people review the group and watch them slowly realize just what the group does with their voices. I was blown away by the one guy that said that “Dash Punk” video was a studio mix and wasn’t impressed and then a few days later he posted the LIVE performance that they did inside of the Japan airport and it was EXACTLY like the video, and it blew his mind.

Avi (Ah-ve) is the man who you are referring to that looks like Jesus. He is the bass of the group. He is a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. While he is singing, Scott (the blond) is filling in on bass. Avi left the group in 2017 on good terms due to family issues and other things. He has a wonderful solo career now. Yes, he does ALL the drum sounds. His name is Kevin Olusola and you should react to some of his solo videos of him playing cello while beatboxing and looping different sounds. "Down" is my favorite of those. Mitch will be happy with you whether you use male or female pronouns. He generally refers to himself as a gay man. Scott - blond baritone - is one also. They have (or had - no new content recently) a side project called Superfruit on which they are enjoyably silly, make some actually great music (in fact, released a well-received album a couple of years ago), and talk more frankly about being gay.
His name is Avi Kaplan, bass vocals, and yes he does look like Jesus, and he is Jewish. Now the beatboxing is done by Kevin, on the left end, and he is all percussion instruments as well as horns, guitars, keyboards and anything else you want him to be. He is FENOMINAL! Kirstin, the only female, has a tough job. She has to be able to cut through four male voices and and all the beatboxing to be heard, and man she does it with gusto and and a set of pipes! Mitch, the guy in the hat, is a high tenor and can hit some pretty amazing high notes. He has a very wide range of vocal ability. Scott, the tallest guy in the center, is a baritone with bass capability. He is the one that gives an emotional vocal punch to a lot of the songs at the height of the song. He also kind of takes the lead of the group. They ARE the most EPIC a cappella group.
Mitch is in the hat - unbelievable range. Avi is “Jesus”, Kirstie is the woman, Scot is the first singer and Kevin is the best boxer, singer and cellist. Avi left several years ago and was replaced by Matt.

Everyone feels that way! I've probably seen this video 100 times, and it gives me the chills every time. If you want to see amazing, react to Amazing Grace by them. Even if you aren't the least bit religious, it will move you.
If you want to hear Kirsten take the lead in a video, I highly recommend "Wizard of Ahhhs" It is on Toddrick Hall's channel. However, if you have not seen the movie "Wizard of Oz" I recommend you watch the movie before watching the video as it will make more sense.

The "Jesus" is Avi Kaplan. He isn't longer member of Pentatonix. Instead he is now making his own music. You should listen to "Change on the rise". He also sang "Ring of Fire" with Home Free (another, very good, a cappella band). Also absolutely worth hearing. The bass profundo with beard and beanie is Avi (Ah-Vee) Kaplan. He is AMAZING and was the band's original bass. His warm lows and emotional tone are what I always hear first. He also helps Kevin Olusola (beat boxer) with sounds such as overtones, whistling, wind, etc. He left the band in latter part of 2017 on good terms due to illness in his family and other stress related matters. He has a solo career and leans toward folk genre. You should check out his song Change on the Rise. Avi's lows blow out speakers. His replacement Matt Sallee has a more chill bass sound. The combination of Mitch Grassi(counter tenor in hat) pure crisp highs with the support and foundation of Avi's lows are beautiful. Kirsten Maldonado is the mezzo soprano and Scott Hoying the blonde baritone. When Avi sings his solo Scott takes over the bass. Every member is crazy talented. Yes, I tear up every time I hear this performance. It is spiritual, ethereal and hits me at a cellular level. If you play songs on the piano using only the black keys, then you have only 5 tones per octave, which is a traditional Japanese scale. It is called the Pentatonic scale (pen-tuh-TAH-nick). They have 5 "tones" or singers, so they are the pen-tuh-TAH-nicks. Avi Kaplan (bass, beanie) is Jewish. Jesus was Jewish. Avi is an amazing operatic bass of the lowest type. And he gets up to low tenor. Yep, Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer, cellist and a tenor. If they use an instrument, they show it. No cheating. Kirstin (Kirsty) Maldonado is a mezzo soprano, which is kind of a high alto or low soprano. Classic voice for those Disney princess parts. Mitch Grassi is a very high tenor. Some call him a counter-tenor. Some disagree, based on a strict opera/classical definition. The gender thing is tricky. Scott Hoying is the tall blonde baritone, but he can sing up to mid-tenor and down to upper bass. He was singing bass to cover while Avi was singing the second lead. Listen to it again. You can barely tell it wasn't Avi singing bass. They did this song live in their Christmas Special show. It sounds almost identical to this studio version. Mary Did You Know? and Amazing Grace are similarly big, full, multi-lead songs that will melt your heart.
Yes, Keven is a beatboxer, otherwise known as vocal percussionist. He makes most of the sounds with his mouth, but he'll also stomp his foot, slap his chest, clap his hands, or whatever the song calls for, but yes, he's making those sounds himself.
Scott started off...followed by Avi who left the group in 2017 but his replacement Matt is just as talented...then it was Kirsten followed by Mitch. See that others have given you the basics below, so welcome aboard! From their covers to their original works to their Christmas songs (don't wait until Christmas to check them out, theiy're too good to miss) there is really no way to go wrong with these ridiculously talented people. Just as an FYI though Mitch (and to a lesser extent Kirsti) changes his looks all the time, especially hair (and facial hair - I especially like "pornstache Mitch" and the man really rocks a mullet) so just remember that there have only been six members associated with the group. Just listen for the voice and you'll immediately know it's him...best!
Avi has had a range of looks. In fact they all have. Scott and Kirstie's hair changes color, Mitch goes from mullet to bald and back and Avi's hair kept getting longer and longer. Only Kevin has had a similar look for most of the last 11 years.

@Trivex Silver Speaking of Beatboxers, there is another amazing acapella group called Home Free. Their beatboxer, Adam Rupp, is amazing and has won Beatboxing championships! If you want to check them out, I'd suggest starting with something like "Man of Constant Sorrow" by them, or "Ring of Fire", or even the Anniversary Cover of "American Pie" that they did with Don McLean. Now if you just want to see Adam showing off, there are a few videos of him doing his drum solo at their concerts, and it is absolutely amazing. Just remember, he does it all with his mouth. We Home Fries like to joke that Adam swallowed an entire drum kit as a kid and that's how he can do what he does. Either way, more Pantatonix, Bring in Home Free, and also check out Voiceplay! All are amazing!

All have exceptional Lead voices - but their magic is in their 'blend' and they way they work to help each individual vocal to 'shine'. Avi (not Jesus)- has one of the deepest richest Bass voices on the planet! Sadly - he left PTX in 2017 - but replaced by the fantastic new Bass; Matt (who's not a bad Tenor either) Scott also does a great Baritone. Kevin is 'a phenomenon'! and a foundational asset to the group. Sexy Jesus= Avi (awe-vee)= original bass. He was replaced by Matt. Also sexy. Tenor= Mitch, The gem in the hat. I love watching people hear Mitch sing for the first time… We call it getting ‘Mitch slapped’ lol Baritone= Scott, gorgeous blonde with a huge vocal range and who sang first Kirsten= amazing soprano who gives me chills every time she sings Kevin= hands-down the best boxer that has ever lived. And yes, all of the sounds outside of singing are made by him. He’s a genius.
Avi is the bass.Kirsti is the female.Kevin is the beat boxer...and yes,he makes all the sounds and beat boxes and sings...he also plays cello.Mitch is the hat guy with the beautiful high tenor voice. And Scott is the blond he's kinda loosely the lead,but they all lead at points,but Scott is a founder and original member,along with Kirsti and Mitch.🙂Avi is the guy you say looks like Jesus...hes the bass,but his vocal range is amazing!! Check out Kevin Osceola covering Down by Marain Hill...it will absolutely blow your mind!!!
Something to help with avoiding confusion: - Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, after finding(?) and recommending Matt as his replacement as a bass (this is the ONLY change in the Pentatonix lineup in the last 10 yrs) - All the videos from the PTXoriginal channel are dated - All videos before 2017 will have Avi in them - all the videos after 2017 will have Matt as bass Many, many reactors keep getting confused repeatedly, seeing Avi "leaving and rejoining" the group when they randomly choose videos from different years in their career Another thing to keep in mind - there are many vids of the band performing their "Official" (ie studio) songs live, and/or even "unplugged" (no mics, nothing but them) - these are excellent examples to demonstrate that their performances are almost identical, apart from studio mixing (and compressing[?]) to give a crisper recording.
First one singing is Scott, second one (Jesus) is Avi, who left the group in 2017 and was replaced by Matt, beat boxer is Kevin and yes he does make the music, Kirsty, the hat guy is Mitch.
