Officina del Battagliero is an Italian musical group founded in 2014 with the precise aim of recovering and disseminating, in an essential and pure way, the style and language of folk music born between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century in the Val d'Enza (Reggio Emilia).
Do you know the "Battagliero" waltz ? . . . you almost certainly do! It is one of the most appreciated and played pieces by Italian dance orchestras, and was born in this area, exactly in Barco di Bibbiano, land of great musicians and "cradle" of Parmigiano-Reggiano.
The author is Tienno Pattacini (1908-1978), who decided to make this waltz his 'workhorse'. In the early 1930s, Tienno already had his own orchestra in which he played clarinet and for which he wrote ballet and concert pieces. Pattacini was a very prolific composer, with a repertoire comprising more than a thousand pieces, including waltzes, mazurkas (a traditional folk dance), polkas and tangos.
This type of folklore derives largely from Italian Romanticism, whose greatest exponent was Giuseppe Verdi. In fact, the style of the 'Concerto a Fiato Cantoni' in Parma (1861) is very reminiscent of the sounds of the 'stage bands' often used in his operas. In addition to Concerto Cantoni, there were Pinazzi, Barcaroli, Galli, Casanova and a few others.
Tienno Pattacini, a very young and virtuoso clarinetist, was part of the second generation of the Cantoni woodwind concerts, and it was there that he took on the style that he then transposed with skill and great personality into his own musical repertoire which, unfortunately, over the years was partly set aside. The Officina del Battagliero aims to bring the folk tradition of this territory back to the knowledge of the general public, who are fans of this energetic and virtuoso music.
The staff of Live at QNote has found in this formation a unique historical and cultural authenticity, the true legacy of the musical tradition of Emilia in the early twentieth century, founded between the provinces of Reggio Emilia and Parma. But not only that, it represents a style capable of involving and entertaining a very wide area of communities, from the Apennines to the Bassa, the Polesine, the Lombardy Po Valley.
Musically it was able to influence performances of a markedly more Romagna style with its dance orchestras. Officina del Battagliero gives us refined music, interpreted in a meticulous way starting from the original scores and arrangements, a project fully in keeping with the selection of music that QNote Live wants to transmit.
