This video demonstrates a complete setup and workflow for writing and typesetting LaTeX documents on iPad.
It's not easy to work with LaTeX on iPad. But it can be done, and done beautifully!
This video guide is captioned (accurately) in English and Chinese.

As of August 2022, TeX Writer still ships with TeX Live 2020 distribution released on 06 April 2020, which has shown incompatibility with newer packages, such as l3kernel and bibtex. To obtain an older version of TeX Live, we need the old disk image from the [historic archive](www.tug.org/historic/). For TeX Live 2020 we need `texlive2020-20200406.iso` from a [mirror](ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/tug/historic/systems/texlive/2020/). We need to mount the disk and install it as a portable distribution.

Amazing. Thanks for sharing. I'm about to buy a latex writing app for ipad to write my b.s thesis in physics. Idk if Texpad is better than TeX Writer, what do you think? I'm also using Textastic and Working Copy.
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 2 года назад
I would still recommend Tex Writer. I’ve been trialing Texpad every once in a while. But it still has some old problems: worse Files integration and buggy Split View support. Best of luck for your thesis!

What a brilliant solution. Getting the hang of this, but as an Econ PhD I may be a little daft ;). I'm having trouble uploading pdf graphs using '\includegraphics' as I normally would... Figured I would ask if you have a workaround?

Thanks! I haven’t encountered problems with figures. Do you have a minimal example to show the issue?

Hi, do you think this will work on a iPad pro 11'' 3rd gen with iPadOS 15 ? (We a longtime Mac notebook users and just got this new iPad. We are used to emacs in fact Aquamacs Emacs on our notebooks, so your method looks like it might be great for us!)
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 2 года назад
Yes. It should work on any iPad. But 11” maybe a bit small when working with two apps split on the screen.

My work mostly involves writing, typing in latex, making presentations in beamer. I need all the necessary packages of latex with drawing packages like tikz/pgfplots. I was planning to buy an ipad pro instead of a laptop. Can you please tell me if it is a valid choice or not?
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 4 года назад
Although iPad Pro is definitely a valid choice, I don’t think it excels in this type of work. Most of its strength lies in active reading with the Apple Pencil in my opinion. If your main use is latex, a laptop with a good keyboard is perhaps a better option.

@@taxyovio I'm looking into creating a notebook of summaries for science students in school, but still busy with my MSc in Physics until Aug. I want to get an Ipad Pro instead of a laptop (considering I'm only still using the laptop for latex and configuration of my thesis).. would I be able to continue with my thesis write-up on the ipad pro? Or would you reckon I finish the task on a laptop?
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 3 года назад
@@nedinevdmerwe6483 You can definitely write your thesis on an iPad. But it takes some time to get used to working on iPadOS if it’s new to you. Considering it might be quite stressful already to do your MSc, I don’t really think it’s good timing to change platforms. But if you can manage to take a day or two to just adjust to iPad, it should be a better option than a laptop, especially if you want to write things with an Apple Pencil.

I’m trying to add the .gitignore file to the repository, but it keeps saying that there is one file to be committed, even though i don’t want to commit this to anywhere. What does it mean if working copy states that the device is “locked” and can’t access? Sorry if this is a misunderstanding.
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 3 года назад
I’m not sure exactly what’s going on in your repo. If you make a new repo and put in .gitignore as the first thing, does this still happen? If it says it’s locked, does it mean the pro features are locked? Did you purchase the unlock, or signed in with a github student account?
@mattis2781

@@taxyoviothe first thing that shows up is “one file to be committed” marked in yellow. Do you know how to get rid of it?
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 3 года назад
Is the one file the .gitignore? Why would you not want to commit it? If the pro unlock doesn’t work, I think you should reach out to the dev who is very responsive. You can find a send feedback button in settings.
@mattis2781
@mattis2781 3 года назад
@@taxyovio The problem with the locked device just solved itself! Yes of course I don’t want to commit the .gitgore file, but working copy tells me to, marking it in yellow. Do you know how i can turn that off? Thanks for your help! :)

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Good to hear that you are a theoretical Physicist. I am too doing research in theoretical physics. Can you please tell me is it possible to work with .eps files through tex writer?..And one more quesn, after editing the tex file and even after sync, it actually doesn,t sync to original file on the dropbox itself..Is there any solution for that??..
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 4 года назад
TeX Writer can’t handle eps files offline as the epstopdf package used by PDFLaTeX isn’t compiled on iOS. There’re two options to work around it: 1. TeX Writer can do the conversion online with a pro subscription. 2. You can always convert it to pdf using other apps or websites. As for Dropbox sync, it should work seamlessly as I last checked. Maybe try to re-link the folder?

I'm considering using latex to take notes during class , is it possible to write in latex like in the video and in the same time writting someting on the file with my pencil ?
@taxyovio
@taxyovio 4 года назад
It's not possible in the current iPadOS 13. But there is an upcoming feature called "Scribble'' in iPadOS 14, which lets you write with Pencil while converting the handwriting to texts on the fly. As for taking notes directly as LaTeX during class, it's pretty intense and takes a lot of practice. You should definitely not aiming to make the notes perfect on the fly. I think initially it's best that you take some photos of the blackboards and record audio if allowed.
