The Ethiopians and Somalis are bitter rivals. We fought three major wars. The Adal sultanate-Abyssinian war, the Dervish war, and the ogaden war. In all of these wars the Ethiopians called on white foreigners for help. In the 1500s they called on the Portuguese for help against sheikh Ahmed gurey, in the 1800s-1920s the British had to help them fight Sayid Muhammad Abdallah Hassan of the Dervish state by bombarding his fortress, and in the 70s they cried to the Russians and Cubans to help fight Siad Barre. Somalia at the time had a population of 6 Million while Ethiopia had a population of 40 Million, and yet they managed to capture 90% of the Ogaden before the Soviets showed up. Of those three wars the Adal sultanate-Abyssinian war in the 1500s was the only one where the Somalis were the aggressors. The other 2 and coming 3rd were liberating stolen land

And that's what we're currently doing, Somalia's stability, economy, military, and unity are all on the rise. As for those wars being wars to liberate stolen lands, that's not a lie. Was it wrong for the spaniards to have the reconquista for lands the Arabs conquered, you'd probably say of coarse they should've. Well it's the same here, these lands are Somalilands and Ethiopians didn't even conquer these lands, it was given to them by colonial powers on a plater. We attempted to liberate ourlands in the late 1800's early 19 from colonialists and Ethiopians, and we tried again in the 70s but were unsuccessful because of cubans and Russians getting involved. If we are left alone and no foreign powers fight for Ethiopia, mere warlords would capture their capital let alone liberate our lands.
For Real let me start by saying that I wish the best for your country and people, and while I have only read a little about what is going on in Ogaden I can see why you would want to liberate the region (assuming the rebels versions of events is completely accurate). However I think I didn't get my point across to you very well, so I'll be clearer this time. 1. You being the aggressor has nothing to do with right or wrong, it's who initiates the conflict not whether or not your justified. 2. I didn't really make this point at all last time but I think it's most important, aggression, right or wrong simply is not a viable solution to international conflicts, just look at the US in Iraq/Syria/ Libya. sure you can say we are freeing our people/ land so it's different. but will they all see it that way? You can't be sure, maybe it is for the best in the long run maybe not, but you can never know what the unintended consequences of war and occupation will be. 3. Whether or not a war is justified has nothing to do with whether or not your country or country's predecessor held that land in the past. There are plenty of potential reasons for war with Ethiopia, the most likely being to stop them from committing atrocities or if they are funding rebels or something in your country. But that is not the same as "give us our land from 500 years ago because white people helped you get it" you just sound like a idiot when you say that. 4. Your country had been in consent conflict for 25 years in part, if not directly because your dictator wanted to get "your" land back to make him look good, and you insist that you need to undo this damage so you can go back and do it again? Really, whatever, maybe people one day will learn how stupid it is to keep repeating history, but somehow I doubt it.

My grandfather, a ranked military personnel led armies of soldiers to defend Ethiopia. He played a key role in defending Jijiga and other towns. Mengistu's dictatorship is really one of the worst Africa ever saw, but we don't really hear about it over here perhaps because he doesn't live up to the stereotype of the African dictator in the way somebody like Idi Amin does. Winning the war against Somalia was perhaps the Derg's greatest success - though that of course was very much dependent on the Cuban and Soviet involvement. It's amazing to think Ethiopia did win considering how unstable it was when Somalia attacked - the country had erupted into full civil war at the time, with the Eritrean guerrillas stepping up their attacks, and the army suppressing the revolt of civilian leftist factions in what's known as the 'Red Terror'. Siad Barre trying to take back the Ogaden didn't make things any easier in that situation, but rather than collapse in the face of all these challenges the Derg would continue in power until 1991.

Somalia beat even Botswana and Mauritius, the only African countries to never go to dictatorship (although Botswana is a dominant-party state and the current president Ian Khama has been accused of authoritarianism), in peacefully handing power over democratically. The Horn of Africa has more in common with each other. If governments respect the right of determination were the rights of people language, culture, religion and land rights are respect than this conflict would have never happened. The people of the Somali Regional State have genuine grievance that failed to be addressed. There no pride boasting about two communist dictators who committed atrocities against their own citizens and started a war that ultimately resulted in a stalemate. The region has a common origin and a shared destiny. Future leaders should focus respecting the rights of citizens, eliminating corruption, and economic and military integration.

Barre invaded Ethiopia to serve the interst of Egypt and Russia, but end up distacting its own countrey. They lost 1/3 of its army on Ethiopia's soil. Very sad.
