Or at least buy / license EasUS Partition Manager to make a tool to auto resize that partition up by 400 mb, moving other partitions around as needed after shrinking the system drive down by 400mb
@ZipplyZane
@ZipplyZane Месяц назад
They could, but then anyone who uses Bitlocker and encrypts their drive) would have a huge security hole that would let an attacker get into their system. No, Microsoft has better options. Just ship the image file itself already patched. The new file is just like 15MB larger, and most recovery drives still have the space. It doesn't need to have 250 MB free. The recovery image is 478 MB or so. The old one was like 463 MB. My recovery partition is 512MB. The file fit just fine. (See my other comment to read how I got it to work.)
@ZipplyZane
@ZipplyZane Месяц назад
@@1DwtEaUn Shrinking partitions isn't hard, and Windows already will do that. But moving them in your main drive can easily result in not being able to boot. There's a reason even EasUS will tell you to back up your disk first. That said, they could just shrink the main C: drive and make a new recovery partition. Though as I said in my other posts, they have better options. Very few partitions actually need to be resized at all.
@madmax2069
@madmax2069 Месяц назад
@@1DwtEaUn there is a risk in doing that, most people wouldn't bother with it as the security issue is only if the attacker has physical access to the computer.

Amazing that MS make a USB installer that creates the recovery partition at a certain size then they release an update that fails to install because the recovery partition is to small. How could these pack of clowns not realize that for months then tell you to fix it yourself.

Well, Windows 10 came out in 2015. Back then, common sizes for affordable consumer SSDs were 100-250 GB and people would get upset if a "useless" recovery partition took up multiple gigabytes of that. Especially when the Windows installation plus pagefile/hiberfile would quickly grow to more than 50 GB. Nowadays where you can get a 1-2 TB SSD for the same price, loosing even 10 GB to a recovery partition isn't much of an issue.

Having recently handled this on my computer, Microsoft is being dumb. They very well could get this update to apply just fine. The issue is supposed to be that there isn't enough space on the recovery drive for the update. Vut the final file fits just fine as long as it is at least 475 MB. And it had to be at least 465 MB for the old image. Seeing as most people will have a round number (e.g. 500 or 512), it would almost certainly fit. So the problem must be not having enough free space to apply the patch. But there's an obvious solution to that. Windows can disable the Recovery drive, which copies the image file back to the Windows folder. Now you most likely have plenty of space to apply the patch the image file. Then just reemable the recovery partion, which will copy the file back. How do I know this will work? Because I basically did this. Moving my recovery partition was too much of a headache, so I made a new one that was 1GB, and deleted the old one (after disabling it, of course.) I allowed the update to apply to it. Then I noticed the resulting image file was small enough to fit my old recovery partition. So I disabled it, deleted the new partition, and recreated the old one. Then I reenabled it, and it worked perfectly. Now, of course, this is all rather complicated to do. My point is just that I proved Microsoft is making this much harder than they have to. They could have just applied the patch in the Windows folder. Or, heck, replace the recovery image. It's not like each user has a their own special one. There seems at most to be one per version of Windows 10 (e.g. Pro, Education, etc.).

Just hide the update as you've mentioned. Microsoft should just release an updated ISO that has this fix in place (for new installs , of course), and leave pre-existing installs alone. The RE partition size not being big enough IS NOT the only problem; I've tested 1-2GB RE partitions with this KB and it still fails. MS botched something in the IMG, plain and simple.

So many comments praising linux in face of a known problem with windows, which has always happened so many times since the beggining of this OS. The same can be said of linux with a not so far extremely serious problem with a compression tool, xz utils, found out by a Microsoft engineer! Problems do always exist, most of the time they are solved, in the case of the KB5034441, the load of work involved and the risk of implementing it with non-technical users is not justifiable for the benefit we would gain. I myself used a tool to hide this windows update so it will be no more presented in the future. Leave the militantism for other more important world situations. I am a long time user of windows and debian linux, using both every day.
